Would you buy a bargain pram early and keep it in the house (light hearted!)

Have seen the perfect pram e-bay, right price in my town, and quite keen to buy things over time to spread the cost. Very tempted to buy it and store it in the attic, but I'm only 12 wks pregnant! A) do you think it's too soon? B) does anyone hold with the superstition that it's bad luck to keep the pram in the house before the baby's born (well for that long anyway!)?

I bought one (on sale) at about 20 weeks. The superstition did occur to me, but then I thought I am the kind of person who freaks out if not prepared, so I have been getting things ready and spreading the costs since about then.

I was given some equipment even earlier than that and kept it in the house too.

NoMoreMarbles · 29/07/2013 13:43

i would buy it! i bought DDs pram when i was about 16 weeks and it was stored in the nursery/bedroom from about 20 weeks (once it was paid off :) )

ignore the superstition nonsense and grab a bargain while you can! :)

fibrecruncher · 29/07/2013 13:47

Buy it!

mrspaddy · 29/07/2013 13:48

I started buying things at 12 weeks... it is good to be organised I think.

Snazzyenjoyingsummer · 29/07/2013 13:48

Never heard of that superstition. Buy it!

CheeseFondueRocks · 29/07/2013 13:49

I would.

Mckayz · 29/07/2013 13:50

I'd buy it. I'm not very superstitious and have had the pram in the house before giving birth with all 3 of mine.

flipflump · 29/07/2013 13:50

I was told I was risking it having the pram in the house from 30 weeks. Yet, no one said a thing when I had the cot, Moses basket etc in the house at 20 weeks. Buy it, everyone loves a bargain!!!

maja00 · 29/07/2013 13:51

I would, better to spread the costs over 6 months than have to buy everything at the last minute.

DifferentNow · 29/07/2013 13:51

I think I started picking things up after the 12 wk scan. Superstition = bollocks.

Madratlady · 29/07/2013 13:52

Buy it, no point passing up on a bargain!

I'm only 15 weeks and got given a bag of baby clothes, a play mat and an inflatable sitting up ring by a friend the other day. I did feel a bit weird having them this early but they were free and they are nice and it was very kind of my friend!

Buswanker · 29/07/2013 13:54

Yes. You will need every pound that you save when you buy a bargain for the when the baby arrives.
I will be having 3 children under three so I will always have a pram in the house, getting rid of it because of superstition would be stupid.

SaucyJack · 29/07/2013 14:03

No! Am three months and haven't bought anything (other than one token sleepsuit after bfp) yet.

Not superstitious, just realistic.

Franykins · 29/07/2013 14:06

I would if I was you. We wanted to spread the cost, especially after finding out we're having twins. We got our pram/buggy at 18 weeks as it was such a good deal, Should have been over £900 for the buggy and carrycots but we got it for £543, would have been silly not to with a saving like that really. although it has ended up at MIL's as we have no space to store the box, won't go through the loft hatch! But we did have it hanging around in our room for a month before DP got fed up with it taking up the space.

TheDetective · 29/07/2013 14:07

I bought my bargain pram with DS1 at 5+6.

You could say it was a little early Grin.

12 weeks, go for it!

ArabellaBeaumaris · 29/07/2013 14:09

I wouldn't.

LotsaTuddles · 29/07/2013 14:12

I bought mine at 15 weeks and have been buying the rest of the big stuff since. It's all in my bedroom (piled up) ready for when we move or baby's born, depends which is first

My mum was being all superstitious about it - I just ignored her Grin we were given a Moses basket before that and it's been in our room since too

specialsubject · 29/07/2013 14:19

There are no such things as luck or superstition. Having the pram in the house will have no effect on whether your pregnancy is successful or not.

buy all the kit second hand. The 'nothing too good for my baby' thing wastes loads of money. Buy it cheap off those who were daft enough to buy new!

the only things that need caution are cot mattresses (where there is some evidence that a second-hand one may increase the cot death risk, although bet no-one throws them away between siblings) and car seats (where you need to be certain the seat has been treated carefully and not been in a crash)

CheeseFondueRocks · 29/07/2013 14:24

It you have normal, low risk pregancy, chances of a loss are 0.5% after a successful 12 weeks scan This rate doesn't chance because you have a pram already. As long as people are aware that not every pregnancy after 12 weeks results in a live baby, what's the harm?

In fact, babies die at birth and I'm sure most people have their prams by then.

Meringue33 · 29/07/2013 14:24

Buy it. We didn't get round to a pram in time then baby came early! You won't feel like shopping with a newborn. (Oh and superstition is incomplete faith, people :) )

Doodledumdums · 29/07/2013 14:28

I did! My mum said to me that you cannot make anything bad happen by having baby things in the house, which I think is very true. Buy it!

comfyonesie2 · 29/07/2013 14:37

Thanks everyone, I think I'll go with the majority and buy it Grin

I did exactly that, then at my 12 week scan discovered it was twins!

I still used it though with both of them in the carry cot so all was not lost!

valiumredhead · 29/07/2013 15:04

I didn't even know about this superstition,I bought mine early-good job as ds decided to arrive 8 weeks early so good job I was organised!

Andanotherthing123 · 29/07/2013 17:06

I hadn't even conceived DC1 before I bought a pram off eBay. I felt so embarrassed telling DH what I'd done. Fortunately, he knows I'm impulsive so didn't bat an eyelid. Didn't work out so well though...didn't fit in the boot of our car. My family still tease me about it five years later!
