Just that really.

I was diagnosed with one last week at 6+1. Baby measuring fine for dates and nice strong heartbeat. But bleeding keeps coming and going - sorry if TMI, I have a short 'gush' which soaks a liner then it quickly tails off completely only to come back in the same way a few days later. Bleeding is all brown so far. I was told it is close to buy underneath the pregnancy sac. And it's fairly small - I think 11mmx5mmx6mm.

I'm so very scared. This baby took three years to concieve and I've already had one m/c in that time.

Please someone tell me you've had the same and it's all going to be ok. Thank you.

Me. I had one and it re absorbed. All fine.

highlove · 22/07/2013 21:02

Thank you. Did you bleed with it?

I had several. All bigger than baby, massive bleeding and hospital admissions, still bleeding at 20 weeks. Dd is 5 now, somehow she survived all that.....and more, but her problems were unrelated to the haematoma. The doctors warned me I'd bleed, and they were right - I was admitted 6 times for the blood loss. Scary times, hope all goes well for you.

WhispersOfWickedness · 22/07/2013 21:07

I had a small bleed at 8 weeks which turned out to be one at an early scan. The sonographer said it was fairly common and it wasn't really mentioned again except for them to say it was gone by the 12 week scan. I only had one bleed.
What have the health care professionals said?

Jollyb · 22/07/2013 21:10

I had a big bleed at 6 +3 and was diagnosed with a 2cm SCH. Had a further bleed at 10 weeks but no more bleeding after that. DD2 arrived safely 3 days ago.

WhatWouldBeyonceDo · 22/07/2013 21:10

Diagnosed with one at 6 weeks after a bleed. It was as big as the baby, bleed on and off, by 12 weeks scan had re absorbed.

It's scary, but sub chronic is the smaller kind if that gives you any comfort. Just rest up, no heavy lifting etc

PickleSarnie · 22/07/2013 21:19

I had a mahoosive one at just after 11 weeks. Stood up and had a massive gush of blood all over the floor. Went to a&e. They found a heartbeat. Continued bleeding really heavily (heavier than my heavier period) for two more days. Had another scan a few days later and they found a haematoma measuring something like 10cm x 9cm x 3cm. I had another couple more weeks of bleeding (but brown blood this time) The haematoma was still there at 20 weeks but much smaller.

Rest of my pregnancy was totally straight forward and my son was born at 39+5 totally healthy.

Theironfistofarkus · 22/07/2013 21:19

In all likelihood I have had many of these as I bled several times with each of my 3 pgs. Only got a name for it on pg 3. 3 DC all perfectly healthy.

highlove · 22/07/2013 21:20

Healthcare professionals are relaxed to the point of dismissive about it. Which I know is a good thing and I should just accept it, try not to worry and wait till me next scan.. But everytime I bleed I panic. We've been through such a lot to get here I'm massively anxious anyway and this is sending me over the edge.

Thank you for reassurances. Happy to hear more though!

I had one diagnosed at 5+5 same size as baby but never bled with it and by 8 weeks it had shrunk and they never even mentioned it on the 12 weeks scan. I found lots of good threads on babyandbump.com. lot of mums to be are going through the same as you so it might be good to chat there.
I've read lots of great stories
good luck x

WhispersOfWickedness · 22/07/2013 22:43

I think if the HCPs are relaxed, that is a good indication that you should be too Smile
Can definitely understand why you are worried though! Hope you have a straightforward and uneventful pregnancy, congratulations and good luck SmileThanks

FreckleyGirlAbroad · 22/07/2013 23:19

Can I join the sub chorionic hematoma club????? I woke up one morning, while staying at friends house, and had had a massive bleed in the night. Rushed off to find a doc who could scan me there and then, fearing the worst, but luckily the little heart beat was still beating strong. It was the most terrifying wait ever!

I was told there was still more there and would most probably bleed again, which I did, but I live in Spain and here they are not quite so dismissive about it so I was out on immediate bed rest and there I stayed for about 6 weeks!! As I'm 40 and mine is an ivf baby and with the hematoma thrown in, it is classed as a high risk pregnancy.

I'm now at 29+3 and all is fine (touch wood). From what I understand, the position of the blood clot is what is important. If, like in your case OP, it is between the embryonic sack and the cervix it should be OK as can make is way out alone. It gets complicated if it's above the embryo as can take everything with it on the way out.

Best of luck with the pregnancy!!

highlove · 23/07/2013 07:51

Thanks everyone - am feeling much calmer today. Have another scan later this week so not too long to wait. Just hoping all the bleeds mean it's shrunk lots - fingers crossed.

Freckleygirl - mine is also an IVF baby. I think it gives you a license to worry and freak out as much as you like. Glad to hear all is going well for you now though. How far along were you when it happened and had it gone now? In my slightly obsessive (and frightening) googling I've seen lots of stuff about people being put on bed rest. Dr I saw at EPU was very clear though - carry on as normal. I've been doing that but taking it a bit easy. Assuming all is ok at the scan this week I'll ask about it then.

I had one at 6 weeks, bleeding for just over two weeks! I got re-scanned and it had gone.

Theironfistofarkus · 23/07/2013 08:14

When you get further along, it is worth asking whether you should be induced early. All 3 of mine were as a precaution - just one week early. It's a drag in some ways but at least you know when they are coming so can plan ahead. Good luck high love and try not to worry. I had some huge red bleeds and babies just fine.

chickabilla · 23/07/2013 08:42

I had a big bleed at 11 weeks and was told it was due toa subchorionic haematoma. It was gone at my scan 2 weeks later. i did then bleed from 14 to 20 weeks but was told that was due to cervical ectropian. With both i was told to carry on as normal. DD was born at 36+0 but otherwise perfect.

FreckleyGirlAbroad · 23/07/2013 10:20

highlove, I was at 7 weeks when I had the first big bleed but I had been having quite a lot of brownish spotting for a couple of weeks running up to that which I just accepted as normal. I was given loads of extra scans because of it and they kept a really close eye on me and it had re-absorbed by a few weeks later. I was told to bed rest until a minimum of 10 days after the last bit of bleeding and was given the green light to go back to work at 12 weeks.

Tbh, bed rest was the worst ever...ok, it got me through the morning sickness and fatigue, but it actually began to make me feel quite depressed and not enjoy this such-longed-for-and-struggled-for pregnancy.

At 29 weeks now and all has cleared up and feeling great!!!!! Take it easy and use it as an excuse to do as little housework as possible and be spoilt!!!!!

Smerlin · 23/07/2013 10:59

I had bleeding for the whole first trimester due to this- by my 20 week scan it had all reabsorbed. Am now 27 weeks and getting a good kicking!

I wasn't put on bed rest but, having read that in the US they recommend bed rest for SCH, I did try to take it very easy, didn't lift anything heavy etc. Could be coincidence but it cleared up after that.

ceara · 23/07/2013 15:33

Me too OP. And mine's also an IVF pregnancy after nearly 3 years of trying. Congratulations and I'm sorry you are going through this extra anxiety with your SCH.

If it's any comfort, I spotted constantly from 6+3 for about 3 weeks, due to an SCH below the sac near my cervix, with one scary red bleed at 6+6 on the day of my first viability scan. I haven't spotted at all for the last month (I'll be 14 weeks on Friday). The SCH measured 28mm x 8mm at 9+3 which was longer than the baby. However, two subsequent scans have shown that although still there, dammit, it's shrinking and reabsorbing and most importantly the baby is growing appropriately (meaning the SCH hasn't compromised the placenta). So I am crossing my fingers things will be OK from here, and will keep them crossed for you too.

I too consulted Dr Google - bad, bad idea! - but amongst the online gloom is the positive information that SCH is a common complication and 9 times out of 10 things turn out fine. That is possibly scant comfort to an IVF-er as our BFPs themselves are proof that the small percentages sometimes come to pass. But the odds ARE on your side with this.

Like some of the other posters, I read and was freaked out by the conservative advice from the US for bed rest. My clinic and GP did both advise taking it easy (mostly for my peace of mind) and pelvic rest, but were very clear that the bedrest advice isn't evidence based. My GP was adamant about the importance of getting on - gently - with daily life, as distraction helps with relaxation and positive mental attitude which he does feel are themselves sometimes a subtle part of the healing process, as well as being sanity preserving generally :-). I took a couple of days off work after the bleed and since then have avoided heavy lifting and generally tried to take it quite easy, including ditching housework guilt, but otherwise have carried on as normal.

Hope you are doing OK. Hang on in there.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 23/07/2013 15:38

I had one at 11.5 weeks, spent virtually every weekend down a&e till about 6m. I bled to varying degrees til 6/7 months when it finally reabsorbed.

It can go either way but dd is 2 and a half now and although on the smaller side when both, the problems that followed were not a result of the SCH.

It's very scary but it is amazing what the baby appears to survive. Just take easy x

highlove · 23/07/2013 18:34

Thank you all so much. Am still super anxious but definitely feeling a bit better than last night. Wish it would just go away but judging by lots of your experiences looks like I could have it for weeks yet. But thanks - you lovely ladies have made me feel more positive x

PickleSarnie · 23/07/2013 20:27

Forgot to mention in my post. Step away from google. Google is NOT your friend. It terrified me.

It's a really horrible time and the worry won't go away. I was really frustrated about how non plussed all the midwives and doctors I saw were but I guess they're like that because it's so common and generally has a positive outcome.

Will have everything crossed for you. When's your next scan?

Anothermrssmith · 23/07/2013 20:38

My first scan at 9 weeks (now 14) showed a small sch and its never been mentioned again since, I assume that means its reabsorbed as I've not had any bleeding but must remember to ask about it at my next appointment!

highlove · 23/07/2013 21:43

Next scan is just a couple of days...not long but every hour feels like a month!
