Am 40+1 today, had a sweep yesterday and nothing:-( sooo have been booked in for induction next week.....the horror look on some people's faces when I've told them this tells me that it's obviously not a great experience, I've went into labour naturally with both my dds so have nothing to compare to...any good stories out there????
F :-)

Induced twice. Not eventful really. Progressed like a normal birth

WhatJeff · 03/07/2013 09:37

Though do note you can refuse. I did for another.

MrFranklyShankly · 03/07/2013 09:40

Well that's good to hear whatjeff, at this point I just want babs out so I'm keen to get going, don't think I could hack waiting much longer, can hardly walk around in so much discomfort......did it take long if you don't mind me asking???

I was induced at 41+5. I went in at 3pm and had a pessary a couple of hours later. Spent a mildly uncomfortable night with cramping but still managed to sleep a fair amount. Another pessary after breakfast. Bounced on a big ball for an hour or so. Was offered a bath in the birthing pool as it was unoccupied. That was bliss. It eased the cramping wonderfully :)

Wallowed in the bath being fed sandwiches by my husband and doing crosswords. At midday I needed the loo so started to get out. That's when the first contraction hit.

Just under three hours later DD was born.

The actual giving birth was the bit about being pregnant that scared me the most so for me the overall the experience was a positive one.

I hope yours is as good.

I wa induced at 42 weeks with DC3. By far my quickest and easiest birth. Given gel at 9 and 3. Twinges at 6. Contractions but manageable with tens at 7 ish. Examined at 930 and was 5 cm. gas and air. Baby born at 1010 with 3 pushes. Super. And I am a right wuss.

MrFranklyShankly · 03/07/2013 09:45

Thanks Calabria, that sounds great....here's hoping it will be something similar ;-) think my fear is the strength of the contractions, as a few have told me they are really strong quiet quickly....but 3 hours sounds good

Oh wow must tidy, that's giving me hope that it might not be the nightmare I'm expecting it to be, great to hear the positives :-)

It was intense but over quickly and so so so much easier than a log drawn out labour. Best of luck. I'm no hypno birthing advocate but I definitely controlled myself better in that labour - before it starts count how many deep breaths you do in a minute. Then count your breaths through each contraction - it gives something to focus on and stops panicking and kept me calm.
Everyone is different bit this really helped me.
Also, just as an aside, I was always told my contractions were 'not long enough to do any good' at 30-40 seconds each. But I've had 3 babies so I guess that is shite. Smile

MustTidyUpMustTidyUp · 03/07/2013 09:56

Btw is this your first? If yes unlikely to be quick. I know it's controversial but in all honesty my advice would be to have an epidural (shock horror!) and definitely have one if you have to have the drip.

CinnamonAddict · 03/07/2013 10:00

Hi F, my induced birth was the easiest and quickest of the three.
Was induced on due date due to pre eclampsia.
In at 4, paperwork, iv drip put in at 5, contractions straight away (really low dose and started gently), son out at 8.
9lb 4, I had no painkillers because I didn't need any.
It was a Sunday, I had a midwife doing it (normal in Germany), we managed to keep the doc away until my son was out (my choice) and it was magical. Walked out plus baby at 11.30.
I am just about to go to his Prize Giving , he's 12.

Weegiemum · 03/07/2013 10:03

I was induced for my 3rd labour, having gone spontaneously and early with the first and second. I was induced at 36+6 as I was getting very unwell.

Induced with pessary at 6am, mobilised from 8am, 2cm (and that was from a very "unfavourable" cervix) by 1pm. Went to delivery at 5.15pm and she was born just after 6 - very similar to my 2nd labour and much, much nicer than my 37 hour nightmare first time round.

A midwife did tell me that inductions tend to be easier if you've laboured before. Not sure if thats true or not.

ClaimedByMe · 03/07/2013 10:06

I was induced at 40+9, they inserted the pessary at 10pm, at midnight I was having contractions (I was having them before the pessary according to the heart monitor but I didn't feel them) at about 4am I thought I needed a poo and plodded off to the loo for my waters to break down the toilet, at 5am a midwife reluctantly checked me as she thought I was being a drama llama with the pain to discover I was 8cms, the midwife panicked, went to phone dp then rushed me to the delivery suite, I started pushing in the lift, dd was born at 6.42, the worse part was needing cut and no pain relief as her heartbeat was dropping and she already nearly out, turns out her hand was coming out with her head, I actually couldn't believe how easy it was Blush

MyNameIsLola · 03/07/2013 10:09

I've had two very straight forward inductions (and am very likely looking at a third).

First one, given pessary at 7 in the evening, spent the night with period pain type cramping but nothing unbearable. My waters were broken at 9 am the following morning and DS1 was born three hours later. The contractions did come thick and fast tbh but it was manageable.

Second induction the birth was less than 90 minutes from first contraction to delivery. Again it went from 0-100 very quickly but it wasn't too bad, no pain relief apart from some G&A for pushing.

I know there's some horror stories about induction (I was told enough of them Confused) but there's also loads of positive ones. The end result is a baby and the method becomes irrelevant very quickly anyway.

Best of luck Smile

So glad to read some positive induction stories... I'm booked in for Saturday morning and really hoping baby comes on his own prior as have also heard loads of negative stories - mainly about pain and additional intervention.

Keep the positive stories coming please!!

MrFranklyShankly · 03/07/2013 11:12

Thanks so much ladies, great to hear such good stories, this will be dc3 musttidy so delighted to read about subsequent births being quiet quick....I actually used the hypnobirthing breathing with dc2 and found it helped and I managed to avoid any pain relief and had a nice birth....was just a bit worried that if the contractions were really intense with being induced I'd like to get my say in early for an epidural (I'm no martyr!!!) but would like to avoid if possible.....
Awe cinnamon that's so sweet your little bundle is all grown up now, lovely to recount his nice birth story....yeah I'm sure everyone's birth story with induction is different and there are some genuine horror stories for some people so I'll just try and keep focused on the positive and the little bundle at the end of it all....thanks for sharing ladies:-)

Induced with DC2 at 40+16 ( Shock )

Had the gel/pessary/whatever it is inserted at 1pm, pootled around a bit for a few hours, went for a bath at around 4pm, been in having a lovely soak for all of 5 mins when my waters went Hmm - contractions started, used just gas and air, had baby at around 7.30pm :)

MrFranklyShankly · 03/07/2013 12:15

Sweet lord foof 40+16!!!!!!!!!

mamachelle · 03/07/2013 13:09

i was induced twice, the 2nd time was the best, had the gel/pessary and went from totally not ready to snuggles with new baby in 6 hours ish.

was no more unbearable than my spontaneous labour and i got through with no pain relief and felt brilliant after! was a lovely birth!

badguider · 03/07/2013 13:15

I read recently the interesting facts that although induced labours are more likely to end in intervention and CS than spontaneous labours... if you look only at women who are over 40 weeks, then induced labours are actually less likelty to result in instruments or cs than just waiting it out.

What will you be at on the day of the induction? Personally I'd leave it to 42 weeks if at all possible as that's still within the boundaries of 'normal' length of pregnancy and gives more chance of things happening by themselves.

MustTidyUpMustTidyUp · 03/07/2013 13:29

OP I requested epidural (fab things) when she confirmed I was 5cm. Anaesthetist quickly arrived and was knocking the midwife was calling 'hang on I don't think we need you the baby is on its way' and I was shouting at the closed door 'don't you bloody to anywhere yes we do!' Grin we didn't.

gintastic · 03/07/2013 13:38

I was induced with no3 at 41+6. No pessary as I was already 3cm dilated, so they just broke my waters. Nothing happened, so they started a drip. Had my first contraction about 90 minutes later, DD2 was born 45 minutes later. We left hospital about 3.5 hours later, total time out of the house was 10 hours. And a lot of stitches - I hadn't gone into labour myself as she had both hands underneath her head, therefore couldn't get her head onto my cervix to get things going. She was born hands first rather than head, makes a bit of a mess... But an amazingly positive and happy experience considering I was terrified of being induced...

Underwood2013 · 03/07/2013 15:48

badguider v interesting and positive to hear stats like that... Not sure about the others on this thread but I am booked for induction at 40+12... in 3 days (eek!)

MrsBungle · 03/07/2013 15:51

I loved my induction. My first birth was a long drawn out nightmare.

I was induced with number 2 at 40+4. I was put straight on the drop and less than 2 hours later ds was out. 5 easy pushes. It was brilliant for me. Lovely and quick and easy.

MrsBungle · 03/07/2013 15:52

The drip not the drop!

TinkyPeet · 03/07/2013 15:59

*hijacking thread, sorry op xx
Will be having my 2nd induction for dc3 next week at 38+, induction with dd took 3 peas arise before anything happened...4 days in hospital took its toll on me and made me feel very sad, I wasn't offered a drip or anything just changing the pessary every 24 hours when the previous one didn't work. I hadn't known there was a drip or anything.....
So my point.... Should I be expecting the same long drawn out process or should I be asking for a drip next week? (Or a faster way of induction?)
Tia xx
