Am 40+1 today, had a sweep yesterday and nothing:-( sooo have been booked in for induction next week.....the horror look on some people's faces when I've told them this tells me that it's obviously not a great experience, I've went into labour naturally with both my dds so have nothing to compare to...any good stories out there????

Peas arise? Lol, pessaries

WhatJeff · 05/07/2013 09:30

Induced 40+15,

started mid-morning, had that night about 2am but not in pain really until 12 when it got going

Induced 36 weeks (waters had gone)

24min. Ouch.

WhatJeff · 05/07/2013 09:32

The first was the normal way with each stage, the second was straight on the drip (asked for it as didn't want a cs so agreed to give me a short go, I had group b strep so she had to get out fast) and was an unexpected response all round I believe.

My mum was induced three times. The whole thing never lasted more than eight hours on gas and air and zero intervention.

I was induced, had an epidural at the same time, went to sleep. Woke up on occasion when they came in for a rummage. Slept. Read book. Chatted to DH and mws. They then realised DD1 was too big for my birth canal, and wouldn't come out vaginally without masses of help. So we had an EMCS as I preferred that to forceps, tearing, and generally being broken. So the whole labour thing was a waste of time really, but the induction and labour wasn't an unpleasant experience. In fact it was a nice rest. But I did have an epidural.

PetiteRaleuse · 05/07/2013 09:38

Oh, and it started with a pessary then moved quickly on to the drip as my cervix wasn't dilating fast enough.

GrandPoohBah · 05/07/2013 09:47

I think the general consensus is that if you have the drip it can all be a bit intense and fast (and painful), so be aware and maybe open to the idea of an epidural?

I was induced at 38+3 for preeclampsia. I had the gel at lunchtime, waters went at 10pm, contractions kicked off just after and DD was born at 10.30am after 90 mins of pushing. 12hrs of labour; not bad for a first baby! It was fine. I had a partial epidural to keep my BP down and didn't have to have the drip, so that all helped a lot.

I've been induced twice, but early, for IUGR. Both were pretty quick. Much more prepared second time around, so felt very relaxed.

DD1 (36/40):
Examined & cervix 2cm, so no pessary. Membranes ruptured with hooky thing (not painful at all) at 5:30pm. Contractions started fairly soon - probably around 30mins later. Mostly back pain. Uncomfortable, but manageable. Progressed fairly quickly. Baby became distressed, so ended up with episiotomy & forceps delivery less than 3 hours after waters broken. (had nerve block, nothing else).

DD2 (37/40):
Examined & cervix 2cm dilated. Membranes ruptured at 5:30, contracting by 6, sat on ball reading a magazine as contractions built up. By 7, getting more uncomfortable & feeling pressure. Delivered baby completely naturally by 7:20. No tears, tiny graze.

Hope this helps.

Tinny I don't think you can have the drip until you have started to dilate, as strong contractions against a completely closed cervix could cause uterine rupture.

Op I have had 2 inductions - ds1 with drip at 40 + 1, about 7 hours, no pain relief and a lovely calm experience although I did need constant monitoring so stayed on the bed throughout (compromised on sitting rather than lying). Second pessary night before appeared to do nothing (40 weeks exactly) 8am contractions started, born at 9.12am with gas and air. Personally I found the contractions more intense with second birth and I have no 'normal birth' to compare to but they were both manageable. First time I was waiting for the pain to get bad before I started pain relief, all geared up for an epidural, then before I knew it I was pushing! Try not to worry :-).

3boys3dogshelp · 05/07/2013 13:18

Btw I am a wuss! Definitely don't have a high pain threshold!

RNJ3007 · 05/07/2013 13:23

I was induced. Drip up for twenty minutes, then taken down as I reacted so strongly to it. 3 hours and 3 pushes later, DD was here. Only gas and air (until prepped for emcs due to 3 loops of nuchal cord) and delivered on way to theatre!

This time, despite being high risk, I have a list of things to have at home, just in case we don't make it in!

LST · 05/07/2013 15:08

I went to be induced but they ended up being able to just break my waters. I had to go on a drip to start contractions, but I had my first contraction at 1am and I was cuddling a baby by 7.32am!

My 'active' labour was only 1.32 hours long Grin

Underwood2013 · 05/07/2013 15:34

Going in tomorrow morning... Fingers crossed my experience will be as positive as some of the ones on this thread!!

MustTidyUpMustTidyUp · 05/07/2013 15:42

Good luck underwood.

TotallyEggFlipped · 05/07/2013 16:29

Good luck, Underwood!

Underwood2013 · 05/07/2013 17:16

Thank you both!

Whiteshoes · 05/07/2013 19:23

Agree with quick and easy. Gosh, it's making me want to do it that way again this time! Can I ask for the drip?!

The midwife told me that 75% of inductees opt for an epidural, as drip makes contractions more painful. However, did a bit of whatever I learnt from listening to a hypno CD a few times, and delicious gas and air, and it was fine. Fun even!

childcarehell · 05/07/2013 20:16

Good luck.

I've done induction without and without an epidural but have no normal to compare pain to. Although it was agony (but only for the last hour) without I'd do it without again as after I was fine and on top of the world. WIth it was far more drawn out, took ages to recover and seemed to snowball. I did though throw the gas and air away as 'FUCKINGUSELESSSHITE' Blush maybe it's better for others!

MrFranklyShankly · 05/07/2013 21:39

Great to hear such positive stories re induction :-) I'm actually looking forward to getting it on now next week and finally meeting this baby who seems to want to stay in here for good!!! Thanks to all for sharing your stories, they should be published because in RL it really has been a lot of horror stories I've heard....although I know realistically some people don't always have a nice experience, so here's to hoping. Thanks :-)

I was induced with my first. I had two pessaries. DD was born less than 12h from the first pessary. I used a tens machine mainly for the pain although I did have some co-codamol at the start also. I dilated very quickly, fom 1cm to 10cm in about 1h. DD weighed 9lb 5oz, so not exactly tiny. I have lovely memories from that birth.

I'm now 39+1 with my 2nd. I've got an induction date already if I don't go into labour naturally.
