Due baby early November and can figure out/decide what to buy for baby's sleeping arrangements...

I had a Moses basket for DS1 and he was in it 6weeks then in to a crib then a cot! I didn't buy the cot or the crib, they were gifts so I had the luxury of having all 3... My now problem is, 4years on I got rid of all DS baby things and can't decided what to buy,

Moses Basket CONS- are not cheap! £100 for a decent one stand etc and I can't justify that for 6weeks then having to move on, PROS- easier to move around the home, and is smaller so baby feels safe and secure...

Crib CONS- more expensive, take up more room, not as mobile as a Moses PROS- longer use out of it (how long??) baby feels secure and not drowning with space

Cot - baby will always move on to cot but I'm reluctant to put baby straight in as it is a bit big and "drowning" in it....

So tell me, what did you or do you plan to use for baby? Maybe some links? Or tell me which ones i can go look at... I don't want to waste lots of money but if I will get plenty of use out of it, price is not a major problemSmile

Thanks very much Thanks

We've bought a Moses basket from eBay (will give it a good clean and replace the mattress), and are getting a cot bed (once we've found somewhere to store it until October!

I'm anticipating a 9lb+ baby like my first, and he was only in his Moses basket a couple of weeks before he started wriggling and waking himself up!

I believe you can buy barriers which make your it smaller for newer babies, and you can get nest type things too I think.

We'll go straight from basket to cot bed I think.

PhieEl06 · 01/07/2013 12:30

Our plan is a crib from day 1, however it's a hand me down so no links, for downstairs napping & putting down I plan on using our carrycot from our pram, I have just replaced the mattress with a more substantial one, this also means easy to transport/move around. Then plan on moving to cot in nursery & we've brought the Mothercare Darlington Cot. HTH Smile

I'm still indecisive with regards to which cot to buy to be honest but just thought I'd let you know you can get a new mama's & papa's Moses basket, with rocking stand and 2 fitted sheets from amazon and it's £68 Smile

moses basket for a few months (and MAN are they expensive!!)

then cot (gulliver, ikea, assembled at the weekend!)

notso · 01/07/2013 12:45

I've always used moses baskets and the pram.
None of my 4 have grown out of them until 5 or 6 months and two of them were 9lb + at birth. You don't have to spend loads on one. I bought a cheapo one, and got it recovered with naice fabric, it was well under £100.
There's rarely a difference in the quality of the baskets, it's usually the fabrics and the baby doesn't care about them anyway!

I've never bothered with a crib because everyone I know who had one has hardly used it, due their babies not liking it! We have declined loads of hardly used cribs over the 4 pregnancies!

DS3 slept in the bassinet part of a travel cot but with a proper mattress upstairs from a few days old, we have three flights of stairs and it was a faff to carry the moses basket up every night.
He looked tiny in it but always slept comfortably.

I have a mosses basket borrowed from my sister for downstairs, a crib from mothercare in our room for the first 6 months, it was less than £50 from mothercare for the crib and mattress. We then have a full size cot from Kiddicare for after 6 months in its own room which was £125 inc mattress, so you dont need to spend a fortune.

noblegiraffe · 01/07/2013 13:40

I've got a Moses basket downstairs that DD still sleeps in at 5 months, although she also sleeps in her swing (from about 3 months). Upstairs I've hired a co-sleeping bednest from the NCT for 6 months. I thought she wouldn't still be in it, but she still has headroom despite being in 6-9 month clothes. She'll then go in a cot in her own room at 6 months.

TobyLerone · 01/07/2013 14:42

I hate Moses baskets. I think ours will sleep in the pram in the day, and then we'll get one of these for nighttime.

Emmabombemma · 01/07/2013 15:03

I've bought a second hand crib (new mattress) off gumtree for our room and using the pram carrycot during the day as it's one of the safe for overnight sleeping ones. I think Moses baskets are a waste of money as you don't know how long you will be able to use it for.

TheFalconsmistress · 01/07/2013 15:59

I have bought a cot and mattress nothing else Moses lasted 4 Weeks with dc1

Locketjuice · 01/07/2013 17:15

I have a Moses basket from ds1, so will use that for around the house, I got a crib with two new mattresses off eBay so have that in my room and got the summer oak cotbed from mothercare :)

GrandPoohBah · 01/07/2013 17:20

I borrowed from a friend a Moses basket and rocking stand initially. Then DD went on her mattress on the floor next to our bed. Then she went into her cotbed in her own room.

Smerlin · 01/07/2013 17:22

Renting a Bednest for 6 months while baby in with us (with new mattress) and then cot/cot bed when baby moves to own room

BigBongTheory · 01/07/2013 17:58

We ditched our crib after dc1 and bought the John Lewis Anna glider crib for dc2. It was great and we used itbfor nearly sixth months. We could just keep our hand on it and push dc2 gently to rock off to sleep.

Due in November too and just ordered the John Lewis troll royal baby cot which is currently on sale down from £195 to £99. Bargain. Can't comment on it yet as not seen it. But looks really good and sturdy on pics. v excited :-) there are still a few left last time I checked x

Also ordered a cot top changer. Going to buy a mattress closer to time but prob go traditional spring as worry they will get hot on a foam one ( they will if they are anything like me)

Borrowing a friends Moses basket initially and will see how long it lasts in that.

Don't see the point of a crib as it won't last long and I'm told a lot of babies don't like them as they bash their arms on the side x

Bodicea · 01/07/2013 18:18

Just. Thought maybe if you can't find anyone to lend a Moses could buy a pram that is suitable for overnight use until baby is ready to go in a cot.

I am sure will be fine for a few weeks.

Apparently my mum put my in an open drawer for the first few weeks! I assume she at least put a mattress in it!

TarkaTheOtter · 01/07/2013 20:00

Look on gumtree ebay. Should be able to find a Moses basket and stand for about £15. New mattress for about the same. ASDA do cheap ones too.

Beatrixpotty · 01/07/2013 20:06

I've always used Moses basket in bedroom and pram downstairs for daytime naps.
This time I put the Moses basket inside the cot to keep the baby safer from his brothers!
I think if I was starting again and didn't want to buy loads I'd just use a cot from Day 1.

niffernaffer · 01/07/2013 20:13

What about getting a Moses basket from your nearest NCT sale? There should be one sometime between now and nov - ours cost a tenner!

RugBugs · 01/07/2013 22:10

Another one with an NCT bednest, bought at a baby show with £100 discount so should recoup most of the cost when DP makes me sell it.

tiredteddy · 01/07/2013 22:17

Ds1 used a crib until 5 months then into cotbed.
Ds2 used the same crib until 6 months (however in Reality we co-slept for first 3 months) then into the same cotbed.

We moved south and house is much smaller, sold and gave away baby stuff.

Dd has slept in ikea cot next to my bed from day one. She did look tiny but so sweet to look through the bars and see her right there. She's still there now at nearly 6 months and will be staying until we clear loft room to move the boys so she can have a bedroom ConfusedBlushGrin

Jollyb · 01/07/2013 22:20

I've hired a NCT bednest for DC2. We've got a Cosatto bedside cot too but it's a bit cramped in our new bedroom with it and i don't think it's snuggly enough for a newborn.

My initial plan was to buy a sleepyhead bed guard and put it in the cot - I then became a bit worried about the SIDS risk. The spare covers were also £40 each!

TeaandHobnobs · 01/07/2013 22:25

We had a Moses basket which was used downstairs for naps for ages (DS was prem and took a long time to grow out of it!). If you decide you need one, pick up a cheap second hand one and just get a new mattress. If you have a carrycot for your pram that can often be used in lieu of a Moses basket.

Upstairs in our bedroom we had a Saplings space saver cot - somewhere between a crib and cot in size, as our room isn't big enough to accommodate a cot. We removed the drop side so it only had three sides, and had it up against our bed to act as a bedside crib. DS was in this until about 8/9m, when he went into a cot bed in his own room.

Havingkittens · 01/07/2013 22:36

We've hired the bed nest too. DS wouldn't sleep in that or the Moses basket for first 6 weeks so was co sleeping and napping in car seat or nestled in a big v pillow. Now he sleeps in the bed nest which I really like because he's right next to me and I can just reach over and scoop him out for night feeds or put my hand on him when he's agitated. He only just slept a night in the Moses basket whilst away from home without a fuss recently at 11 weeks.

Smilehappy · 02/07/2013 00:09

Thanks ladies! Very helpful SmileWink

I've never heard of a "bed nest" lol ShockBlush so will google it and check it out!

ThanksSmile
