Didn't think you were meant to eat blue cheese when you're pregnant?

LittleDonkin · 10/06/2013 21:44

Its soft blue cheese you shouldn't eat. The NHS info pages say stilton is fine as are all hard cheeses.

The varieties of traditional Stilton which are hard, non-veined and typically sold in a ceramic pot are fine. Blue veined not okay. (Per my GP - I checked the Christmas I was pregnant with DD1 as online advice so contradictory).

Mayanbob · 10/06/2013 21:49

This is of no practical use whatsoever, but in my opinion there can never be too much Stilton... You've got me hankering after it now Smile

ilovepowerhoop · 10/06/2013 21:50

www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/are-hard-cheeses-safe-to-eat-during-pregnancy.aspx#close - hard stilton is on the list of ok cheeses

LittleDonkin · 10/06/2013 21:51

It says on the NHS choice page - You can eat hard cheese such as cheddar, parmesan and stilton even if they are made with un pasteurised milk. Hard cheeses don't contain as much water as soft cheeses so bacteria are less likely to grow in them. It is possible for hard cheese to contain listeria but the risk is considered to be low

BLOODY HELL!!!!!! I have just read the back of the packet and it says - Expectant mothers and those prone to infection are advised to avoid this type of cheese!!!!!! I trusted the NHS website!!!! It did not state certain types of stilton it just said stilton. I feel sick now that I have done something to my baby!!!!!!

MisselthwaiteManor · 10/06/2013 21:58

They'll be putting that on the packaging to cover their own arses, don't worry.

Yonionekanobe · 10/06/2013 21:59

PLEASE don't worry. The risk is really, really, really minuscule. I'm sure no harm has been done at all. Warnings are just a precaution.

I understand the worry though - I've eaten a load of 99 ice creams this summer then saw on here a couple of days ago soft ice cream is on the 'banned' list. I think these things are flagged but very rarely a problem.

Yonionekanobe · 10/06/2013 22:00

Hoppus is spot on!

ilovepowerhoop · 10/06/2013 22:02

they will just be covering themselves as other websites also say what NHS says e.g. webMD for Boots also says:

Eating mould-ripened soft cheeses (brie, chevre, camembert) and soft mould ripened cheeses (Danish blue, gorgonzola) during pregnancy can be risky. They can harbour Listeria bacteria, which has been linked to miscarriage, premature delivery and death of the baby. You can eat hard cheeses such as cheddar, parmesan, blue Stilton even if it is unpasteurised as hard cheeses contain less water and listeria bacteria are less likely to multiply. Other cheeses such as feta and mozzarella are fine to eat as long as they are made from pasteurised milk. When in doubt or dining out, ask before you eat.

FoofFighter · 10/06/2013 22:03

You're fine!

And in answer to your thread title... NEVER!! Grin

LittleDonkin · 10/06/2013 22:05

Phew thank god for that! The stilton consumption can commence!!!!

s0fedup · 10/06/2013 22:19

all i ate for about 3 months early preg was stilton...
stilton stirrred into various pasta with cream, stilton and crackers, stilton and french bread, stilton and creme fraise on medium/rare steak...
so naughty but so nice!
Its all i wanted to eat!!!

ElBombero · 10/06/2013 22:26

Ill probably get flamed butnindont have any restrictions ony cheese intake. There hasn't been a case of listeria in years, the evidence and advise is old. The French I know for instant don't have any restrictions on cheese.

RememberingMyPFEs · 11/06/2013 08:52

I'm 33 weeks today I love Stilton and haven't touched it for 29 weeks. Mixed messages out there but I may dig in having read the links on here...

HMT13 · 11/06/2013 09:03

i've been dying for stilton, it's definitely been one of the things i'm missing the most. And to think I could have been eating it all this time! I thought we couldn't!

HazleNutt · 11/06/2013 09:05

elBombero I'm pregnant in France and yes it is recommended not to eat soft cheeses here as well. (I still do though, listeria is very rare).

heidihole · 11/06/2013 10:28

hoppus is right

there can never be too much stilton and red wine

FoofFighter · 11/06/2013 12:34

(wave) Remembering it's def on the list of OK to eat on the HHS guidelines, munch away!!

FoofFighter · 11/06/2013 12:35

*NHS

notanaxemurderer · 11/06/2013 15:44

I eat stilton, and soft cheeses. But I don't live in the UK, where I live the 'no cheese' advice is considered bonkers! If there was a listeria outbreak you would know about it anyway - I'm pretty sure there have only been two in the last two decades or thereabouts.

RememberingMyPFEs · 11/06/2013 15:47

Doing a Stilton jig!! Thanks Foof >waves back
