Pregnacare?

Tulipsandbuttercups · 08/06/2013 22:44

I'm 10 weeks pregnant and today I saw my MW for the 1st time. She asked if I was taking folic acid, which I am, but had now said that I should start taking pregnacare instead as it has vitamin D in and take it until the baby is born. Is anyone else taking this?

I was told by my doctor at 5 weeks just to take folic acid upto to 12 weeks. I have a reasonably heathy diet.

Unsure of what to do?

I take pregnigcare and mumomeaga through out pregnancy (not sure about spelling)

heidihole · 08/06/2013 22:49

Yes I took pregnacare and DHA fish oil tablet last time and this time too. Can't hurt and may have huge advantages. Seems a no lose situation.

mikkii · 08/06/2013 22:49

I thought pregnacare had folic acid in it, I never took separate folic acid always pregnacare from TTC DS (now nearly 9 with 2 little sisters)!

MissTweed · 08/06/2013 22:52

I take pregnecare. I'm a biomed scientist and test more and more women's blood that is deficient in vit D. You mainly get in from the sunlight. But with all the hype about skin cancer and using sun lotion and covering up etc etc people are getting less and less of it (especially some cultures where women cover up more) I take the pregnecare (or any of the others as it contains loads of other essential nutrients as well. You may be eating a healthy diet but whilst pregnant your needs are different because the baby is essential sucking the nutrients out of you.

Futterby · 08/06/2013 22:55

I'm taking healthy start vitamins - folic acid, vitamin d and vitamin c. Can't hurt :)

Signet2012 · 08/06/2013 22:56

I took pregnacare but got huge constipation problems

Keep an eye out and stock up on dried apricots just incase.

shudders at memory

IJustWoreMyTrenchcoat · 08/06/2013 22:59

Just a tip, buy a small pack of pregnapure and see how you get on. It made me feel utterly sick, and that was before I even fell pregnant. I found Sanatogen Mother To Be tablets more palatable.

IJustWoreMyTrenchcoat · 08/06/2013 23:01

pregnacare!

I aso take Opti 3 a vegetarian friendly Omega 3 supplement.

TwasBrillig · 08/06/2013 23:01

I used pregnacare until a mw pointed out the supermarket own brand had the same ingredients. You can check the percentages on the back to be sure!

notanaxemurderer · 08/06/2013 23:44

I also use the supermarket own brand - exactly the same stuff at a fraction of the price.

Excited85 · 09/06/2013 07:28

My mw gave us a certificate to pick up free healthy tart vitamins at the children's centre which I've been using then can go back for more when ran out. Did she give you anything like this? Might be better than spending loads on pregnacare as quite a few women don't get on with it x

Excited85 · 09/06/2013 07:28

start, not tart!!!!

alienbanana · 09/06/2013 07:32

I don't take any of the pregnancy vitamins as I can't tolerate the iron in them.

I do take vitamin D though. We've had hardly any sun in this country over the last couple of years so its more of a safety net.

Its my understanding that its very difficult to get enough vitamin D in this country, the weather is so crappy and you can't get enough from your diet, so take a supplement.

heidihole · 09/06/2013 07:33

To clarify, pregnacare contains folic acid so you don't need to take FA separately.

alienbanana · 09/06/2013 07:35

Take vitamin D3 though.

I also take a calcium supplement, but I don't eat dairy so its needed. Vit D helps your body absorb calcium.

MissTweed · 09/06/2013 08:01

I've had constipation since taking pregnecare.... But until reading this thread had never made the connection between the two!! Thank you ladies you may just have helped my bum!! Lol

BlessThisMess · 09/06/2013 08:18

In addition to the above, probiotics are really useful to take in pregnancy as they have been shown in good scientific studies to reduce the incidence of eczema and allergies in children whose mothers took them during pregnancy.

Fairydogmother · 09/06/2013 10:40

I was massively allergic to pregnacare! There is also iodine in it and as I have a thyroid problem I can't take extra. I use the sanatogen mother to be and so far no allergic reaction thank god.

There are loads of cheaper ones that pregnacare out there!

NomDeClavier · 09/06/2013 10:45

I used Santogen with DS and have pregnacare with this one. The Santogen are more palatable...

notspringchicken · 09/06/2013 11:02

Am persisting with Pregnacare largely because all I can stomach eating right now is toast, hula hoops and ginger biscuits - hardly the basis of a balanced diet! I this MissTweed has a point though - it's hard to get enough vit D naturally. I was deficient in vit D for most of last year (I blame the awful weather) and had to take extra supplements for a while.

chryssa · 09/06/2013 11:56

I also take supermarket own brand, but I will also start taking mum omega soon..

Tulipsandbuttercups · 09/06/2013 22:14

Thanks all, I'm going to stop taking folic acid and start with pregnacare, see how I get on with it x

NHS guidelines are everyone to take folic acid up to 12 weeks and vitamin d throughout pregnancy. The rest you are meant to get through diet but can't hurt to take it as a pregnancy multivitamin. Certainly doesn't have to be pregnacare though! I got it when it was offer but ASDA own brand did me just as well.

Vitamin d guidelines came in relatively recently. Your GP may not be as up to date as your midwife.

PurplePoppySeed · 09/06/2013 22:47

I took pregnacare conception when ttc and changed to the maternity one for the first 12-14 weeks, also because I couldnt eat well, but i have to admit i'm more slack about it now (26 weeks)

I think the Vit D thing is important but should be considered in parallel with your skin type. The darker your skin, the more sun you need to get enough Vit D. I have such pale pasty skin i barely need any sun, yet I can see the difference in my DH when we go somewhere sunny on hols or when he remembers to take vitamins as his skin is so much darker than mine and he obviously needs it more than me! But also agree if you never go in the sun/always cover up you won't get enough whatever your skin tone.

urtwistingmymelonman · 10/06/2013 07:11

im the same as sygnet and get constipation due to pregnacare.
im still taking it though and just has a supply of prune juice in the fridge.
