Robinson's squash

I'm really struggling with the taste of plain water at the moment and can hardly stomach it. Do you think it's ok to drink Robinson's squash instead (the no added sugar variety)? I know it's not that good for your teeth and less healthy than water but I figure it's better than not drinking at all or drinking fizzy drinks. Any thoughts?

The robinsons one has aspartame which is supposedly not great for you. The Sainsburys own brand one doesn't - it tastes much nicer too

TwoTearsInABucket · 06/06/2013 07:06

Have you tried fizzy water? I have been drinking loads of it, and it has really helped.

Alexandra6 · 06/06/2013 07:16

I find squeezing fresh lemon into the water gives it a nice flavour with no sugar, you could try that? I also drink bottle green squash which is lovely and doesn't have any yucky additives like aspartame, it does have sugar so I only make it quite weak.

fruitpastille · 06/06/2013 07:19

I never thought twice about drinking squash while pg. Roses lime cordial mostly.

Kelly1814 · 06/06/2013 07:35

Like fruit pastille I have been heavily involved in all sorts of squash whilst pregnant. Water is just too boring.

AmIGoingMad · 06/06/2013 07:39

I keep telling myself that its so diluted its fine! But I have fount that Tesco high juice black currant doesn't have aspartame as so many do.

MrsBri · 06/06/2013 07:55

I've never even checked the ingredients of the squash I've been drinking and I also get through quite a bit as it is my tea / hot drink substitute and a good way to get volumes of liquid in.

I'll have a look later to see maybe, but at 38 weeks it's a little late to do much about it!

ComtessedeFrouFrou · 06/06/2013 08:04

I would drink the ordinary stuff over the sugar free because of the aspartame. You really don't need to make it up anything like as strong as they say either.

Agree that fizzy water is good, lime cordial too and Sainsbury do a high juice apple, pomegranate and raspberry one that is lovely.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 06/06/2013 08:20

I drank Sainsbury squash all throughout my pregnancy. And a large mix of other drinks. Didn't occur to me not to! Confused

poocatcherchampion · 06/06/2013 08:37

can't you just eat and drink what you like except a couple of items not recommended by NHS?

TobyLerone · 06/06/2013 08:46

I never drink 'diet' or 'no added sugar' drinks. They're full of awful crap. But there's no problem drinking squash -- I would personally just go for the standard version rather than the 'no added sugar' one.

I'm drinking a lot of fruit juice mixed half and half with soda water. It's gorgeous!

Littlemissexpecting · 06/06/2013 09:14

I'm another drinking lots of squash without a second thought. I find I drink more if I make up a big jug in the morning and keep it in the fridge. Also enjoy fresh fruit juice with sparkling water or sparkling water with lime.

wispa31 · 06/06/2013 09:21

defo avoid anything with aspartame or aculcefame (sp) k in it. even when not pregnant. fresh lime or lemon squeezed into your water is nice and helps keep you more alkaline as if your body is too acidic it will make the sickness worse and dito for the heartburn.

TakingTheStairs · 06/06/2013 09:23

I think not drinking squash is a level of paranoia too far!
Of course you can drink it!!

Yonididnaedaethat · 06/06/2013 09:27

I was sure my DS was going to be born orange with the amount of Irn-bru I drank during the pregnancy. Smile

CinnabarRed · 06/06/2013 09:29

lime and lemon are both strongly acidic, wispa.

milk is alkakine.

Holly1977 · 06/06/2013 11:36

I live on Robinsons and haven't died yet! More addictive than crack if you ask me Smile

Fakebook · 06/06/2013 12:22

Of course you can! Don't be worried by the aspartame scaremongering. I like the pineapple and orange flavour myself.

WallaceWindsock · 06/06/2013 12:27

Do people seriously avoid squash during pgcy????? I drank gallons of it, infact it's all I drink and have ever drunk. My teeth are fine because I look after them, no fillings, I haven't dropped down dead yet and have two perfectly healthy DC one of whom also drinks squash. Ridiculous hysteria IMO, worry about things which are actually harmful rather than standard food products!

Boosiehs · 06/06/2013 12:31

I have also drunk gallons of squash since being pregnant. Jeebus.

Also - aspartame has not been proven to be harmful. It's jsut scaremongering.

Chickpea1983 · 06/06/2013 12:34

I have found that all diet drinks give me headaches since being pregnant, and tap water makes me feel very nauseous, so I am drinking lots of fizzy water and sometimes adding some fresh fruit juice to give it more flavour.

I do agree that not drinking squash is too paranoid. It is more important to stay hydrated, so just make sure you drink enough fluids whether squash, water, fruit juice etc etc. Keep it real people!

Yonididnaedaethat · 06/06/2013 13:39

I've got 3 DC's and expecting a 4th, I never cut out or stopped any foods or drinks, heck I never even took my vitamins as I kept forgetting. My DC's turned out just fine, there is far too much paranoia these days!

GoodbyePorkPie · 06/06/2013 13:50

There's nothing wrong with aspartame.

I don't see why drinking squash would be a problem??

Teaandflapjacks · 06/06/2013 14:35

I completely avoid aspartame - nasty stuff. Should never have been approved, likewise margarine (lost of money exchanged hands IMO). But I drink tons of regular squash. I also worry about my teeth so I use a straw which is a bit better. I found plain water makes my sickness symptoms worse TBH. I also find having it very cold helps too.

GoodbyePorkPie · 06/06/2013 15:10

Aspartame is one of the most studied foodstuffs in the world and has been approved as safe for use by almost 100 countries. Really, you're safe.
