Robinson's squash

I'm really struggling with the taste of plain water at the moment and can hardly stomach it. Do you think it's ok to drink Robinson's squash instead (the no added sugar variety)? I know it's not that good for your teeth and less healthy than water but I figure it's better than not drinking at all or drinking fizzy drinks. Any thoughts?

I mainly avoid aspartame (and margarine) for no reason other than that it tastes nasty!

TinkyPeet · 06/06/2013 15:23

Seriously??? You're avoiding squash because you're pregnant? How very odd! Hmm

PinkApple86 · 06/06/2013 21:36

what is aspartame supposed to do? I've never heard this and been drinking lots of ribena light and I just checked and it has it. I have been drinking diet drinks to try and minimise weight gain. Have I fried my baby?

TinkyPeet · 06/06/2013 21:38

No. No you haven't. It's juice! Lol x

Mouserama · 07/06/2013 06:48

Christ, I hop it's OK to drink Robinsons squash - it's been my main pregnancy craving throughout the whole pregnancy! Drink at least 2 pints of the stuff a day and am currently 39 weeks. That's a lot of squash I've consumed...

Bibs123 · 07/06/2013 10:48

To answer your question - drink as much squash as you like. People here are making a choice to avoid aspartame which is a sweetner and occurs in some squashes and low sugar fizzy drinks.

Hyperhelpmum · 07/06/2013 18:54

It's fine to drink squash, been in hospital with hyperemesis and they actively encouraged it.

lurcherlover · 07/06/2013 19:00

Blimey. Isn't giving up the wine bad enough without worrying about squash as well? Honestly never occurred to me to worry about it, and both dcs have turned out fine on gallons of the stuff as well as full-fat Coke.

Wispa, I'm loving your "alkaline citrus fruit" theory Grin

wispa31 · 07/06/2013 19:29

cinnabar - they help keep your body more alkaline. i thought it odd myself but it does.

wispa31 · 07/06/2013 19:32

aspartame is nasty stuff, as tea says it should never have been approved in first place.

GoodbyePorkPie · 07/06/2013 19:47

wispa31 as I posted above, aspartame is completely safe. It has been extensively tested.

Alexandra6 · 07/06/2013 20:07

At the risk of being slated, there's been a lot of controversy around aspartame and I've heard a lot of the testing's been inadequate and commercially swayed. I choose to avoid it pregnant or not. If you're concerned, look into it or make your own choice to avoid diet drinks to be on the safe side - if not, drink and enjoy them! Same with trans fats etc, make your own choices.

GoodbyePorkPie · 07/06/2013 20:11

It's one of the most tested food items in the world. Something like ninety countries have tested it and found it safe. Any studies showing otherwise have pretty much been debunked.

TobyLerone · 07/06/2013 20:11

I'm with you, Alexandra. Make your own choice. I choose not to imbibe it, pregnant or not.

Alexandra6 · 07/06/2013 20:19

I looked into it and came to a different conclusion based on the credible stuff I read questioning the approvals etc. Again, that's your view but none of us really know so I choose not to drink it.

notanaxemurderer · 07/06/2013 20:20

Friend's DH is a scientist with the HPA and he reckons it's as above, been tested thoroughly time and time again and is completely safe. In fact, because of the controversy it's been tested more than anything else. And there are a lot of studies that turn out to be flawed but these are the ones that make the news.

There are some people who react to it badly (can't remember what that's called but a google will tell you) but it's definitely NOT the cancer-causing, kitten-killing chemical the raving loonies on the internet will have you believe!

notanaxemurderer · 07/06/2013 20:21

"Again, that's your view but none of us really know so I choose not to drink it."

Sigh. Yes, it has been tested umpteen billion times so we do know. But of course it's up to you whether you drink it or not!

RainSunWind · 07/06/2013 20:24

Does anyone know anyone who has definitely actually had anything happen to them through aspartame though? Confused I am kind of sick of "mustn't" and "shouldn't" and "it's bad", we can say that about virtually everything in the modern world today... everything that isn't natural (this includes virtually everything in one's home unless one is an 17th century sheep farmer in the remote hills of somewhere nowhere near a mobile phone tower). eg sofa stuffing, mattresses, clothes fibres, cars, carpet, underlay to carpet, tomato ketchup, cereal etc etc etc ERRYTHING....

but nobody can 100% (that I have heard of) say "Yes. Apartame Caused XYZ illness, for definite, to lots and lots of people". I am aware of the theories but it would be hard to prove any conditions or symtoms were down to aspartame alone, no?

BlackholesAndRevelations · 07/06/2013 20:29

Mumsnetters are so anti-squash! I love it and even let my dc drink it! Smile

lurcherlover · 07/06/2013 20:35

The problem is that studies which show "X causes cancer" tend to involve feeding mice huge amounts of X, which isn't really realistic. In humans, it's very hard to isolate one factor (eg aspartame). Plus, statistically one in three of us will get cancer anyway. Obviously you're best off avoiding massive carcinogens like smoking, but it's incredibly unlikely to be the diet squash that caused your cancer if you were to get it.

Alexandra6 · 07/06/2013 20:37

Rain I think it would be hard to prove that either way to be totally honest. I just choose not to have the diet stuff because I've read articles that make me question it. Each to their own! I'll have to duck out now as not wanting to get into daily mail style debating, just drink and eat what you feel comfortable enjoying!

Fakebook · 07/06/2013 20:40

Look, if you eat a thousand almonds you can die of cyanide poisoning.

If you eat a thousand apple pips you can die of cyanide poisoning too.

You know when potatoes go green and sprout? That's dangerous for pregnant women and can cause birth defects in their baby. Even non pregnant women and men and children are at risk if they eat green potatoes.

Tomatoes also contain cyanide as do cherries. Rhubarb, elderberry are apparently dangerous too.

Everything in moderation is fine.
