Hair removal at 39 weeks, HOW?

So i am ok with my under arms and my legs are just about manageable with a lot of effort but my bikini area is impossible to reach! I also have some pretty mean stretch marks around that region that are a bit sore (i didn't think it was possible!) but i would like to remove the hair as i feel it will be more comfortable after labour, any ideas? or have any of you just left it down there and it made no difference?

If you cannot be free of the tyranny of depilation when you're about to have baby I honestly don't know when you can. I also cannot begin to see what difference bikini line hair would make to your post-birth comfort. I gave given birth twice and I can assure you that the presence or absence of pubic hair was not a pressing concern on either occasion. Give yourself a break.

mrspaddy · 02/06/2013 14:52

Hello..I am a good few weeks behind you but was thinking about this and though of wearing a pair of old pants and using Veet Spray???

MrsMargoLeadbetter · 02/06/2013 14:53

Do you mean get rid of all of it? I think you will need professional help if that is the case.

I managed to do a shave (38 weeks) but have resigned myself to sorting it out post birth.

scaevola · 02/06/2013 14:54

I'd leave it, as you could go into labour at any time and it's a bad idea to be freshly waxed or shaven (routes for infection).

Also as regrowth whilst the post-parturition area is still sore/distended sounds hellish to me.

igirisu · 02/06/2013 14:58

KarlosKKrinkelbeim its for comfort over anything, i usually keep myself hair free as thats the way i'm most comfortable but since not being able to reach i have not been able to do this! it is purely for my comfort Smile

mrspaddy i have never used veet but have been considering it! i'm just not sure wether it would upset the stretch marks? i may get some and try a patch test before i go the whole hog!

scaevola i think you are right, i have it in my head that i want to do it strictly for comfort rather than appearance but it might be more hassle than its worth, leading to me being more sore and uncomfortable than i already am.

Trust me, hair left to grow au natural is going to be a lot less uncomfortable post-birth than re-growth. Plus there is the infection issue to be considered, as scaevola rightly points out.
You are allowed to leave it. Really. Nothing will happen.

Am 34w's (plus a day or so). Did the full deed a few weeks ago as things had got really rather unmanageable and was flipping hot and itchy.

Did get OH to help because just couldn't get to all of it....

Now am "over" the itchy and scratchy stage of it growing back and it just seems to be at around half a centimeter (if that at the mo). From this point on though, I think I will just keep think trimmed using something like a grade 2 ish trimmer thingy on the other end of my wilkinson sword razor used for underarms/legs etc.

Probably wouldn't go the whole hog at 39 weeks... but would do bikini line! (Ha! That's a joke.. what bikini line?!)

BelleEtLaBaby · 02/06/2013 17:12

I've got an electric bikini shaver to do mine and at 26 weeks am managing pretty well with that. I get rid of it all, for my own comfort as I prefer it all gone. Also feels cleaner: apologies if this is TMI but I keep wetting myself and I am paranoid that it will smell Blush

Don't think the infection risk is the same with a dry/electric shave as the skin isn't stripped in the same way?

Blanketsandpillows · 02/06/2013 17:27

I think Veet is the way I'll do it. I'll use a mirror to help. No risk of cutting myself as I would with a razor, and not as painful as waxing will be at that stage.

workingtitle · 02/06/2013 17:34

I wax my own bikini and am managing it atm (20w) but I'm finding the hair is coarser and it seems to be spreading massively. It's been a pain to do. I'm not keen to leave it to grown because it if i do it will be absolute hell when I get round to it again, and I feel more hygienic without hair.
I'm thinking of getting it waxed by a professional up to 36 weeks then just using trimmers to keep it short.

igirisu · 02/06/2013 17:52

my hair since i have been pregnant does look like i have a comedy wig in my pants, i don't know where it has all come from. i do wee myself occasionally when walking Sad so i just wanted to feel fresh and tidy but might just take a strimmer to it rather than a complete shave.

and reikimummy it is bloody itchy and clammy! thats whats making me want rid of it, the appearance to me is not an issue its the comfort! I am going to try to trim it i think or if not i will braid it! anything! Angry

workingtitle i kept it short until i stopped being able to reach. i had a go at it a few weeks ago in the shower and was defeated, waxing would be my method of choice but i have some bad stretch marks that i think would be ripped open if i waxed.

Totally get your concerns! I feel really gross when I'm hairy down there! I used to use electric trimmers but stopped being able to see what I was doing by around 24 wks. Tried roping in OH but he was paranoid about accidentally nicking something so caved and went for a prof wax at 26wks and another at 32. am currently debating when to go for my last one before the baby is born but like you I've developed some stretch marks across the top (am VERY unimpressed) but mine aren't sore. Figured she's prob seen it all before anyway and would prefer to feel clean!

workingtitle · 02/06/2013 18:26

Igirisu--comedy wig is a good description! It's come out of nowhere. I guess I'll have to rethink if I get stretch marks or the extra blood flow makes it too sore. It really isn't to do with aesthetics (although I've become so used to it it looks odd to me now to be very hairy). I am more sweaty when hairy, which on top of heaps of cm is a pain.

IndecisivePramBuyer81 · 02/06/2013 18:28

Take paracetamol an hour before waxing!

sprite25 · 02/06/2013 19:04

ohh Im so glad someone else posted about this as I was wondering what your supposed to do when you cant reach down there (although Im far from that stage yet). Was watching a birthing video and the lady in it was extremely au naturel, I mean it was everywhere including between her bum cheeks....I dont know if I could have people (even midwife or nurses) looking down there with all that going on :S

Jollyb · 02/06/2013 20:05

Veet spray and a mirror

MurtleTheTurtle · 03/06/2013 07:26

I use one of those intuition razors, with the built in block of moisturiser/shaving balm and just do it by feel alone - managed to stay hair free underneath right up to my due date. So long as you can physically reach the area you can shave it with one of these (although I was worried about slicing bits off by accident first time I did it!). I only shave underneath and tidy the rest though.

PoppyAmex · 03/06/2013 07:31

I was HUGE at 38 weeks and called a beautician home for a full wax.

It was more painful than usual but I felt fresher.

pebbles1234 · 03/06/2013 07:39

I'm 37 weeks and have booked a wax, if you're worried about the stretch marks just have a chat to the therapist when you book, and if you go somewhere that uses comfort rather than normal hot wax I find that more gentle... As you said, for me its more about feeling clean/comfy than any vanity.

worsestershiresauce · 03/06/2013 07:43

Don't shave, veet or dilapidate, just ask your DP/DH to trim it really short with scissors. You are going to be fairly ripped apart down there and regrowth is an infection risk. Your midwife will advise you to to leave well alone if you ask.

I had to be cut and stitched and I am very glad I didn't have itching regrow and ingrowing hairs to deal with in addition.

Oops double post - sorry

StuckOnARollercoaster · 03/06/2013 08:33

Also 39 week's and this was one of DP's new jobs! Use a shaver and trimmed everything up and it feels so much better. Was becoming quite a jungle down there as I'm sure there was more hair than ever before!

Bejeena · 03/06/2013 08:49

I have also decided to delegate this job to my husband and he did it the other day using a bikini trimmer but I have also got some veet which I am going to get him to do for me to. I am 29 weeks and my issue is not so much I can't reach but can't see.
