Hyperemesis Support

LucindaE · 01/04/2013 18:03

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH MOP Ovaltine bluebirdsunshine (I think she's changed her nickname) Fluffy, Horsey Kalidasa, Nannyl and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Excuse the pun but need to moan, I'm so sick of feeling sick :(

wavesandsmiles · 19/04/2013 12:53

Snap honeymoon

I've just seen my consultant. Ketones were 2+ despite my best efforts, and my blood pressure is still super low at 90/50 which is why the fainting is continuing. I'm staying on the daily regime, but have to try oral ondansetron of an evening to see if I can keep that down.

Baby is fine, on the small side (10th centile) but great heartbeat and very wriggle. Seeing her for the next official appointment in a month when I'll be 30 weeks but on ward rounds before then.

MOH100 · 19/04/2013 13:15

quiet I think you may well have hyperemesis or if you don't get effective treatment you might progress to hyperemesis. You don't necessarily have to have lots of vomiting to have HG, intense nausea is enough to cause dehydration and ketones so you still need treatment. Phenergan may well help, but if it doesn't there are a range of antiemetics that you can try. Give the phenergan a couple of days and go back to your doctor if you're not improving, other medications to ask for are cyclizine avomine, stemetil, metoclopramide, buccastem or ondansetron. You can also try taking vitamin B6, you can take it along with any antiemetic. You can also combine antiemetics. Be warned that lots of doctors know hardly anything about HG and are reluctant to prescribe. If this happens, ask for a referral to a hospital consultant. If you don't have any effective antiemetics, you end up in hospital needing rehydration. Have you looked at www.pregnancysicknesssos.co.uk or www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

TiredFeet · 19/04/2013 13:29

Waves glad to hear you have a lovely wriggly baby, I hope that gave you a bit of a boost.

I am having a slightly better day today, kept all my meds down and some food and managed to look after DS. ungrateful wretch that I am I am now worrying something is wrong because I am not so sick. I need to snap out of it! Crisps and ice lollies are definitely helping me, can't face much else and struggling to drink enough water but at least somethings are helping.

honeymoonmum · 19/04/2013 13:47

Don't worry tired I have had a few good patches. It comes back :( currently got my dizzy fuzzy head on which I hate. Not sure if dehydrated as not weed for a while......answers own question?!

TiredFeet · 19/04/2013 14:02

yes think that answers your question honeymoonmum !

honeymoonmum · 19/04/2013 14:23

OMG TMI alert, just said to husband what shall I eat? To which he replied my cock. ????????? He did apologise when he saw my face but seriously? Seriously? What is wrong with him? Now lying in bed crippled with nausea. Urgh Someonw just knock me out.

HumphreyCobbler · 19/04/2013 14:32

oh dear...

Tallyra · 19/04/2013 15:24

oh, how thoughtless and stupid!

LucindaE · 19/04/2013 17:57

Honeymoon Oh no, poor you, is the wee like 'Builder's tea'? Silly man!
Emmy and Quiet There we are, MOH and I both concerned you haven't got kesostix. It shouldn't take too long for the chemists to get them in, but in the meantime, if you can't retain water for more than twenty four hours, you'll most likely be dehydrated, and scanty 'Builders tea' wee is a sign.
*Poll I just saw your post about hallucinating cats - awful, but a bit funny in a horrible way- you were obviously forcing yourself to work when completely unfit, it's awful the way women on here do. wavesandsmiles, too. I was thinking, re Lotta's post about her unsympathetic work mates who had ordinary ms making her feel tearful - there must be some standard reply to handle it. Something on the lines of 'I didn't have ms, I had Hyperemesis, which is still a life threatening condition in poor countries where you can't get IV'.
Choccie and Reebok How have you been at work?
We havn't heard from PrincessRichards in a while, I hope she's ok, and littleducks too. Bodo and Boymeetsworld?
LadyMedea Is the tongue dissolving stemetil still helping?
wavesandsmiles Congratulations on wriggly baby.
Humphrey I hope still feeling not too bad?
Apologies to Anyone rudely ignored.

No ketones again but I have started to vomit again. Joy. Had a week off but terrible nausea and now the vomitting begins again. can't eat or do much again. Hope it's a momentary lapse of medication. I was just wondering about boymeetsworld hope she is ok.

PrincessRichards · 19/04/2013 18:56

Hi everyone and sorry I've not been about in a while Lucinda.

I'm feeling quite a lot better to what I was in the first few weeks. I'm still being sick every morning but I then manage a breakfast of plain crisps! I am managing to eat but struggling with findings things, I find that there isn't much I want to eat and if I don't want it then I can't even swallow. I also can't eat much at all or it comes back up so nibbling it is!

Still on the Cyclizine but unlike many of you ladies who are constipated I seem to have the opposite, terrible cramps and diarrhea which makes normal life more tricky than the sickness when I get the urge to go Hmm

I feel a little guilty keep coming on talking about me as I have improved a lot and I feel terrible compared to all you ladies who are having such a terrible time. Still the feeling of nausea goes on and on and on and the terrible heartburn but when I think back to weeks 5-12 I have to admit there is an improvement, I've also not lost anymore weight which is positive, growing a little bump now although no weight gain yet. I'm now 15 weeks and finding out what baby is next week so something to look forward to.

Thinking of all you ladies who are still suffering, I really hope there is a let up for you all soon.

honeymoonmum · 19/04/2013 22:13

Urgh clean sheets and can't stand the smell of fabric softener. Here's to the end of a horrible HG day :(

Tallyra · 20/04/2013 01:20

Have you looked into the washing balls you can use without powder or softener? DH is sensitive to softener so we don't use any, and we use the ball things if it's stuff that doesn't need much of a wash, more like a freshen up.

honeymoonmum · 20/04/2013 08:56

Just spoke to out of hrs gp about constipation and she recommended drinking more and eating fruit durrrrrr I can't!!!!!!! Has prescribed me latulose so will let you all know if I can keep it down .

LucindaE · 20/04/2013 09:23

Honeymoon Hugs. As daft advice as ever I heard! If you could keep down fruit and water, you wouldn't be phoning her...Lactulose? I've never hear of that, the 'lac' prefix makes me wonder if it's milk based?
great advice from Tallyra, though.
PrincessRichards I am delighted you are so much better, most lucky women think the bile run is bad enough, but after full blown Hyperemesis... Congratulations on your breakfasts of plain crisps (no doubt those people on Ask Com would be outraged).
How are the new people? We haven't heard from Hotcrossbum in a while.

BoyMeetsWorld · 20/04/2013 09:33

Hi everyone, I'm still here (thanks for checking on me!)

Have had such a horrible horrible few days that I've not even felt like mumsnetting :( yesterday went to work, was going ok (only threw up once in morning) but the moment I got home literally couldn't leave the bathroom. It totally destroyed my birthday the day before, too.

On a happier note I've had my 12 week scan through for next month :)

How are you guys all doing? Here's to a less sicky weekend!

BoyMeetsWorld · 20/04/2013 09:34

Omg honey just read your post about what your DH said!!!! You should have done it. & bitten him. :p

honeymoonmum · 20/04/2013 11:02

Glad you are ok boy! Don't know how you are managing to work. Be careful you don't overdue it! Ive taken a step back and vomitted alot yesterday after a whole puke free week. Going to try some bed rest today to see if I can start to eat and drink a bit more again. Depressing to go backwards. Yeah for your scan! I'm 9 weeks today, do early still :(

TiredFeet · 20/04/2013 11:51

Good to hear from you boy sorry things haven't been good.maybe you should celebrate your birthday again when you are feeling better

Ds's wonderful godmother has come down on the train to help me out as dh is working today, she has been brilliant playing with ds and helping him decorate cakes and buying me lollies, so grateful to her as today would have been very tough on my own and miserable for ds.

honeymoon have you tested for ketones? It only took one day of being very sick for mine to be high enough to need admitting. Also boy I hope you have checked too. I can't believe how much IVs are helping me cope better than last time round so don't be afraid of hospital

honeymoonmum · 20/04/2013 12:08

I haven't been for a wee since first thing but will check. I think I need more IV, skin on my arms so wrinkly and dry and feel pretty rotten but just have no energy or stamina to sit in a and e. trying to sip water now. Can't see myself getting dressed today :(

Tallyra · 20/04/2013 12:29

yes, lactulose is lactose based, which we found out about aftrr dh being prescribed it for ibs and it not working. turns out he is lactose intolerant (as am I) so that was a completely wrong prescription!Sad

honeymoonmum · 20/04/2013 18:03

Is anyone about? I'm really really struggling. After another day alone in bed me and DH just had horrific row. I just can't do this anymore. I want to end this.

QuietNinjaTardis · 20/04/2013 18:27

Hi guys well not long after I last wrote I got a docs appt who promptly packed me off to hospital. They were very nice and gave me drugs and put me on a drip. Managed to eat today and ketones back down to negative. Got sent home and threw up when I got in! Have had a shower and feel bit better. Have a couple of different tablets to alternate with. So will see how I go. Thanks for all your help and concern. Muchly appreciated.

LucindaE · 20/04/2013 18:59

Honeymoon I've just logged on . You poor thing, really feel for you. I think everyone feels this despair where things are so bad at the beginning, and it puts such a strain on relationships. Hugs. Things will get better, almost certainly, and DH is far from alone in lacking understanding.
Quiet Sorry you've had to go to hospital, I was worried you 'd become dehydrated pretty quickly, thank goodness gp acted efficiently. I hope new meds work and those chemists get hold of some of those kesostix.

How is Everyone? "wavesandsmiles" ?
