Has anyone had a baby this big without gestational diabetes?

My beautiful son was born last year weighing 11lb8. I had been measuring big for the last month of pregnancy, but was never diagnosed with GD, and he arrived only one day late. My GP is being typically unhelpful, but as we start to think about planning number 2, I'm fretting about whether I'm destined to have an even bigger baby next time. It is really preying on my mind.
So thought I'd ask wise mumsnetters: is undiagnosed GD common? And do women ever have a first baby that big without GD?

not as big, but to answer your question i had a ten pounder first time round and was worried about gd 2 d time round. was negative for gd and 2nd baby was only 8 pounds.

I had 10 11 and 9 10 without gestational diabetes. i was on a special care pathway for people who have had big babies with the second one. I would imagine they will def teste you for gestational diabetes.

midori1999 · 25/03/2013 21:51

My friend's first baby was 12lbs and she didn't have GD. She had an awful delivery as they had no idea and he then got stuck coming out.

My second son was 10lb when he was born at 38 weeks, I had been tested for GD and didn't have it. My last baby, when I did have GD which was insulin controlled, was 6lb 15oz.

midori1999 · 25/03/2013 21:53

Just to add, if they tested you for GD and said you didn't have it, you didn't. Guidelines for diagnosis are extremely tight. If they didn't test you then you may have had it.

I feel better already, thanks ladies. my GP just wasn't up for discussing at all. Midori, what would the GD test consist of? They were testing my pee every week and then few days (got so used to wandering about with a sample in my handbag), and there were blood tests too, but I didn't have the no eating test I've heard about...

10lb 10 without GD. Was tested and everything. Some women just have whoppers. My midwife waved us off from hospital saying, "See you next time for your 12 pounder". Bastard.

Ellboo · 25/03/2013 22:00

Having started the thread I realise I have no idea whether I'd rather be prone to GD or prone to 'whoppers'...

GD test involves fasting from midnight then having blood taken, drinking a pint of a sugary drink then an hour later having blood taken again. Or at least that is how mine was done anyway.

midori1999 · 25/03/2013 22:02

To test for GD you need to have the GTT, which is where they test your fasting blood sugar levels, then give you a glucose drink and test again two hours later. They can also do a random sugar test in your routine bloods, but this isn't a reliable way to test and wouldn't give a diagnosis.

When I had GD I didn't have sugar in my urine once, so if your weren't actually tested for GD, it's possible you had it. They should routinely test you in future pregnancies as having had a baby over 4.5KG is considered a risk factor.

DS2 was a 10 pounder too, our little sumo wrestler Smile
Was tested but didn't have it, nor did they test ds in hospital, which I would have liked them to, simply to put my mind at ease.

Sheshelob · 25/03/2013 22:06

I'd quite like to have been prone to a bucket fanny in either case...

steppemum · 25/03/2013 22:07

mine were
10lb 1oz (16 days late)
8lb 7oz (lightweight) induced 2 weeks early due to complications)
10lbs 7oz (12 days late)

My mum had big babies too, my brother was over 11 lbs

Neither of us had GD

willoughboobs · 25/03/2013 22:17

I had a 9lb 14oz boy without GD

MarianForrester · 25/03/2013 23:43

11lbs 4. No GD. Told me it would not be big baby Shock

Ellboo · 26/03/2013 10:05

Sheshelob - there are not enough emoticons...
So I wasn't ever tested for it - maybe because it was so late when I started measuring big. There are some big babies in my mum's family, but given my poor Nanna had 8 babies it is very hard to tell how relevant it is :)

Mine was 10.5lbs without GD. I am 5'11 (65kg) and DH is 6'2 (90kg) though and DD has stayed in 98th centile all the way along (she's almost 2 now) so i think it was just down to genetics. But it's got me freaked out too!
SIL had 4 ELC due to bigger babies (she is average height). When i said i don't know if i would go down the ECS route she said 'yes but you are taller so your body can handle Natural birth' Eh?? So because i am taller it means i have a loose fanjo or wider hips!? I am a size 8-10 so this reasoning always confuses me! Lol

Manchesterhistorygirl · 26/03/2013 10:12

There was a woman in the sun, it appeared on kiddicares Facebook feed, that had had a little boy who weighed in at over 14lbs! It didn't mention gd as a cause, but it did say he'd got stuck, but both mum and baby were now.

JoandMax · 26/03/2013 10:15

10lbs 15oz at 38 weeks with no GD - I had 4 GTTs during the pregnancy! At 3 he's still huge.... My first was 9.5lbs at 38 weeks, me and DH we're big babies too so I think it's just genetic. I have been told any subsequent babies would be monitored more closely for size but seems I just breed them big - and have a lovely saggy baggy tummy as a reminder!

Gilbertwasthebestcat · 26/03/2013 10:16

My third ds was 11lb 5oz with no GD. Other two were big too. Easy natural birth (basically standing up) in less than 2 hours. No problems with me post birth either. I'm only 5ft 3 but I guess the child bearing hips must help!

Msbluesky32 · 26/03/2013 10:20

My friend's first was 10lbs 11oz and she is TINY, no GD but her DP is very tall and stocky built (I made a mental note this for future ref). Baby got a bit stuck but she managed a VB after much effort. Her second was much smaller, just under 8lbs.

BikeRunSki · 26/03/2013 10:21

Friend had 3 babies (separate pg) all over 11lb and no GD.

CalamityKate · 26/03/2013 10:24

10lb15oz and 10lb12oz. No GD.

EverythingIsTicketyBoo · 26/03/2013 10:30

First baby 7lb 5oz, but I had glucose in my urine at every test, gtt normal. 2nd baby 10lb 3.5oz also had glucose in my urine at every test, 2x gtt both normal, 3rd baby 34 weeks, again glucose in urine at every test measuring 6lb 6oz on scan I have had gd since gtt confirmed it at 28 weeks. The Dr thinks I may have actually had gd in my last pregnancy but it was not detected on the gtt.

Abigail9580 · 26/03/2013 10:30

10.8lb, no GD, but did have GTT. Not everyone's 2nd baby is bigger. Loads of people say that your running after a toddler when pregnant with your second so you forget to do all the good things your suppose to!
