I'm going to watch it, although there's no way I can have a home birth sadly.

Imsosorryalan · 21/03/2013 20:32

Thanks for letting me know this is on! I saw it advertised last week and thought about watching it but had completely forgotten it was today!
I had a home birth with my second, was as good as birthing gets for me. Smile

GlitterySkulls · 21/03/2013 20:41

i'll be watching, i'm seriously considering a home birth this time around & i'm looking for the pro's/ cons. Smile

looneytune · 21/03/2013 20:50

Oh I didn't know about this so thanks for pointing it out. I loved my home birth 5 years ago and I'm hoping for the same again but love One born every minute so look foward to this! :)

Littlemissexpecting · 21/03/2013 21:16

She is mad planning a home birth while in the middle of building an extension! Very cute baby though and his brother was so good he seemed fascinated by it.

nannyl · 21/03/2013 21:33

im watching

had a wonderful home birth 18 months ago and hoping for another in 13 weeks time Smile

at least ill have a bathroom more than 24 hours before i am term this time, unlike last time....

mrsmellow · 21/03/2013 21:42

I'm clearly on the wrong wavelength- I thought you were talking about online shopping...

ButteryJam · 21/03/2013 23:26

Thanks! Will watch it later. I'm considering it too ..

jbakedbean · 22/03/2013 00:05

Was a magical program. I want a home birth and now I'm looking for an independent midwife. Seems so nice to have the same person see you through all the way, as opposed to complete strangers that I've had a t the last two hospital ones.

Littlemissexpecting · 22/03/2013 02:09

I'm not sure if its put me off or not. I would really panic if baby wasn't breathing like the last birth and going to hosp would really spoil it for me

ohmentalnessisme · 22/03/2013 08:49

I think I love that mw! littlemissexpecting that looked really scary but please remember that the same thing would have happened if the birth had taken place in hospital, it wasn't caused by being at home and the mw managed to resuscitate the baby at home before they went to hospital.

I've had one hospital birth and one homebirth and if we ever have a dc3 I will 100% choose to give birth at home again. It's such a shame that the government are trying to outlaw independent midwifery.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 22/03/2013 08:50

I loved it - the midwife was fantastic . The home birth after forceps was terrific to watch.

Quilty · 22/03/2013 10:10

I'm planning to go for a home birth, I'm glad the programme didn't show a rose tinted view of it because I feel people like the NCT can be biased about risks etc. The last birth with the baby not breathing was very scary! Can't help but think what would of happened if she hadn't got it started...

Luckily in my area home birth is well supported on the NHS, anyone know how much people pay for a private midwife, just out of nosiness really!

looneytune · 22/03/2013 10:12

Totally agree with ohmentalnessisme. My ds2 wasn't breathing when he was born as the cord had been wrapped 3 times round his neck VERY tight - this was not caused by being a home birth and after 2 lots of rub reviving, he was fine and we didn't need to transfer. The resus kit was laid out when they arrived as they have to have it ready just in case but I got far more one to one care than at the hospital and I actually didn't realise that ds2 was as blue as a smurf (dh's words) when he came out as the midwives were so calm and professional.

Did love that midwife on TV though, how fab was she and to see her through the pregnancy. With mine I didn't know who I'd have although I was dead chuffed when my own midwife turned up just as I was about to deliver, meant a lot :)

Littlemissexpecting · 22/03/2013 10:21

I think the programme would have been better if it showed nhs community mws it would have shown how accessible it is to have a home birth. My mw is actively encouraging hbs. I would also love to know how much an independent costs!!

If you have sky or virgin theres a programme on home and health about homebirths with nhs mws. Ims vary in price but the average is around £5000 for the full package (antenatal care, birth and postnatal care) although in October this year the law is changing meaning they will no longer be allowed to practice Sad

nannyl · 23/03/2013 13:33

I too had a baby born at home, chord wrapped twice round her neck and not breathing...
I also only had 1 midwife as the other hadnt made it

had i have been in hospital it would have been a major emergancy, button pressed and everyone come running, and i would have probably though thank god for that, if i were at home something awful would have happened....
but like loonelytune my midwive took control, sorted it and got DD breathing, and i was never even aware until afterwards that there was ever a problem...
i didnt have any of that panic or stress, and it was sorted quickly..... as experainaced midwiives are trained to deal with it.... and clearly do...

and yes, i am still planning another homebirth and will be all ready for it in 10 weeks time

A friend from homebirth group had her baby at home 3 weeks ago.... babys chord was round its neck and forcing it to be stuck, and arm was in the way too..... midwives dealt with it, baby born safely at home and no need for either to transfer to hospital....

It would not have been so calm had she have chosen to be in hospital either....

nutella81 · 23/03/2013 20:51

Sorry, may be a stupid question about a home birth. If you tear, how long after would you go to hospital, and can a home midwife give an episiotomy?

nannyl · 23/03/2013 22:03

you can have stitches at home for a first or second degree tear, but 3rd or 4th degree tears have to be dealt with in hospital.
(mine was done on my sofa)

not sure about episitomy but i would guess so, if you needed it to get baby out

midwifeVH · 23/03/2013 23:31
