How long did you stay in hospital after giving birth to your first child?
Currently 32 weeks and would love to know other peoples experiences.

On the bf thing. The thing is, after a straightforward vaginal birth, it will likely be one night max. Hospitals just don't have the resources for much longer, even if people would like to stay in . So for most people the only things likely to be picked up are very early problems. And often not those.

Do I get a prize for being in the longest

3 days with my pfb! She wasn't feeding very well & very small for being 2wks overdue.

a whole bloody week - right over Christmas!

DS got an infection and had to have 5 days of antibiotics before we could leave.

two nights, wanted out sooner though, so noisy! I think if I had been in a room on my own I would have been happy to stay. Second baby born at breakfast time and was home for my tea :)

EMCS & ELCS - 24 hours each time. Staff busy but supportive.

Six days for first, five for second - normal births, but not in the UK, and I had a private room with good food, so was quite happy to stay in and be looked after while I got the hang of breastfeeding.

Two nights.

My antenatal class and antenatal mw had given me the impression that you wanted an easy delivery so that you could get out of there asap.

In fact, it was the best start in life we could have hoped for. We were well cared for and had a calm time to learn a little about things before going home where, as I remember it, crisis mode kicked in.

I feel so sad when I read about awful maternity wards, as I really appreciated my stay. A shout out here, then, to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

4 hours after delivery - went in at 10.30am, gave birth 4pm, discharged at 8 - but had to wait for DH to come and get us and it turns out he had major issues fitting the car seat base Grin

5 days of bliss - food made for me, private ensuite room, midwives on call to help me get bf going, bath DS, etc (I had a cs). I'm in Belgium though - 5 days post-birth is pretty standard, and tends to be quite good, as there aren't really any "wards" here - mostly just individual (or ocassionally shared) rooms.

6 days. Transfusion for me. Suspected infection for DS. Went a bit stir crazy but got great BF support and my own room (lucky; free).

Hoping to be out quicker this time!

Had DS Friday afternoon, left hospital just after Sunday lunchtime when I was wheeled out of the hospital by a nurse and given a massive tub of fabulous chicken soup by the chef "because my mama wasn't here to spoil me". Love the Caribbean ladies.

I'm glad I had the 2 nights as I got some sleep and everyone and their mother was there to make sure breastfeeding was well established. DH was able to stay too, private hospital so en suite bathroom, fridge, etc.

Was ready to go by the Sunday though, I wanted to sleep in my own bed.

Not sure what we'll do next time round, I'll probably only stay the one night as DS1 will be home with DH. That first night might be the only night I get some sleep!
