How long did you stay in hospital after giving birth to your first child?
Currently 32 weeks and would love to know other peoples experiences.

Three nights for me. I really wanted to go home earlier but we had problems with feeding and some suspicious vomits (from ds!) so he was admitted to scbu. I now think it was much better that we stayed as his feeding was great by the time we were discharged and on scbu the staff had time to help us.

I haven't had mine yet but the midwife told me that as long as the baby and I are ok and they have had a wee, poo and fed that they let you out after 6 hours, unless it's late at night.

We've been in and out a lot recently as I was being monitored for preeclampsia and we saw people leaving with their newborns as late as 8.30pm but I'm not certain what the cut off time is.

My cousin has also had a baby 6 weeks ago in the early hours of the morning and was let out at lunch time.

Nicknamegrief · 19/02/2013 16:07

I was in for 6 days for my first.

EMCS.
Had my own room with ensuite (all sections got that if they had the room). The first midwife I encountered post delivery really upset me but the following ones were fab.

In some ways I hated being there that long but it was a good idea and I went home feeling confident enough with how to get the correct latch and my body was well rested (no housework or meals to prep).

My husband worked while I was in hospital so we enjoyed some extra time in many ways once I got home and he had had time to sort out things for his paternity leave so he wasn't on the phone or popping into work while he was meant to be on leave (which has happened for our subsequent children).

6 days with my first who is 25, that was pretty much standard at the time tbh as was babies taken to the nursery overnight and for two hours in an afternoon for mums to rest.

DC1 had a raised temp at birth so they wanted to monitor for 24 hours. Unfortunately because she was born close to midnight it wasn't really a practical discharge time once the 24 hours were up :( so suffered some more on the post natal ward and eventually got let out mid afternoon post the 24 hour period.

DC2 was a homebirth and my god it was so wonderful just going up to my bed post my bath after the birth.

DC3 ended up a longer time but half of my in-patient was before the birth. Overdue and went in for induction early on a Wednesday but labour ward was so busy it was closed for 2 days before they finally gave me the gel (at 2.30am on the Friday). Finally gave birth at near midnight on the Friday but wasn't that well after. Stayed on labour ward until 9am on the Sat then sent down to postnatal and finally went home on the Sunday afternoon after my bloods were okay'd. I was desperate to get home by that point!

This time I would love it to be another homebirth or at least an in and out hospital one but I will try not to get my hopes up!

ElliesWellies · 19/02/2013 16:36

Stayed one night. Was told I should stay in 24 hours because I had an assisted delivery (ventouse). Just warning you - had to be very pushy to get a paediatrician to do the newborn check the following day. They were in no hurry to discharge me and I wanted to get home.

VisualiseAHorse · 19/02/2013 16:40

Went into birthing center at 11.30am, had baby at 4.05pm, home by 8pm!

So less than 3 hours, because the drive home is about 1 hour.

DeathMetalMum · 19/02/2013 16:43

Three nights dd was born 7pm on the monday I left on the thursday night, pretty much pleading for the midwifes to let me go home. Dd was find they were worried about me, I had a catheter for two days after birth and they were also worried about my tear and stitches. Which I actually didn't feel much pain from at all.

I was very uncomfatable in the bed and just unhappy to be away from dp during the nights. I am really hoping for a quicker discharge this time. Mostly as I have never spent a night away from dd.

kissmyshineymetalass · 19/02/2013 16:45

Got to hospital at 9 in the morning had baby at 1 in the afternoon home by 6:30 in the evening

Chocaholics · 19/02/2013 16:46

DD was born at 10 at night, I was discharged by midday the next day. Would have been sooner but they needed blood test results as I am rheus negative and they needed to checking DD was too.

TheYamiOfYawn · 19/02/2013 16:48

Didn't go in Smile .

AmandaPayne · 19/02/2013 16:48

Instrumental delivery, born early hours of the morning. Home at tea time. No way would I have stayed on that ward unless a doctor said it was advisable (and the doctors were happy, just some daft locum midwife who said it was 'policy' to stay in) as it was the noisiest, hottest place on earth and I was ignored as they were overstretched. My own bed, snuggled up with DH and DD1 was bliss.

PotteringAlong · 19/02/2013 16:49

3 nights - DS had 48 hours of IV antibiotics due to group B strep then 24 hours of monitoring before second leave

sparkle12mar08 · 19/02/2013 16:59

Home birth, so not the same I know, but the midwives had left by about 90 mins post birth.

TheTiger · 19/02/2013 16:59

Just under 4 hours. DS was NVD with episiotomy (ouch). Born at 6.45pm, I was out of there at 10.30pm. I had the choice to stay or go, not a chance I was staying!!

TheTiger · 19/02/2013 17:00

I was in hospital for 10 hours in total.

DancingInTheMoonlight · 19/02/2013 17:01

Ten hours. Would have been less if there had been a nurse free to discharge us!

Hai1988 · 19/02/2013 17:01

DS was born sunday morning was let home on the Tuesday Morning, they said its because they wanted to show me how to bathe ds and there was no mw avalible to do so untill the monday night. I think it may of been down to my age was only 17 at the time

BlingBubbles · 19/02/2013 17:06

DD was born at 7:02am and we were home at 21:30 that night. Would have left a lot earlier if my paperwork had arrived.... But that's another story.

The pead ok'd us to leave at 15:15, birth was straight forward, no stitches, DD fed and did all the right things so I just wanted to go home!

Good luck Grin

Piffpaffpoff · 19/02/2013 17:09

Was on from Weds morning to Sunday afternoon. Admission was due to high blood pressure, was induced Thurs pm, baby born Friday tea time - straightforward birth no complications. Initially I though I would stay til they kicked me out as I felt like a clueless idiot who should not be left alone with a baby, ever. However, something clicked on the Sunday morning - either a feeling of competency or a desperate need to escape my 'lovely' ward-mates - so I left just under 48 hours after the birth.

Second time round I was out 6 hrs later - I couldnt get home fast enough!!

cathers · 19/02/2013 17:11

Was in hospital for about 6 hours for tea, toast and bath, then discharged to a local midlife unit to rest, learn how to breast feed and bathe, change ds. Was ace - lovely midwives and hca's, good food and reassuring.

FrozenNorthPole · 19/02/2013 17:12

Ugh, I HATE postnatal stays.

DD1 - 3 nights (induction for IUGR). Horrid.
DD2 - 2 nights (NVD at 35 weeks, we were both fine)
DS - 3 nights (had pre-eclampsia so 'protocol')

Genuinely the worst experiences of my life (and yes, I know I'm lucky not to have any really horrible experiences to compare them to). I didn't sleep for more than 5 minutes during any of the stays, and the first two involved the systemic undermining of breastfeeding in every cliched way possible. DS was meant to be a homebirth.

SnowyWellies · 19/02/2013 17:14

4 days, because I needed a transfusion. It would have been longer but I wanted so badly to go home and start my new life. :)

shelley72 · 19/02/2013 17:17

DC1: transferred in from homebirth at 5pm, delivered at 7, out of theatre after stitching and back to labour ward at 10pm. left following afternoon, so about 24 hours
DC2: ELCS - again i was out 24 hours after section - and that was only because we had to wait for the paed cons to check her over (breech birth). they wanted to keep me longer but was desperate to get home!
