Already planning something special for bringing our bundle of joy home in and I just wondered what and where people are shopping for cute newborn clothing? I LOVE Boden but its very expenses however the first outfit should be a treat, for everyone, shouldn't it? All cute ideas very welcome...

A coat and a blanket never hurt a baby... Its a soft baby dress.. No buttons or scratchy bits ect...

Plenty of people let their babies wear dresses HmmWink

I'm a bit Hmm at the fashion police on mumsnet?? To really set the cat among the pigeons I could just say its lazy to leave a baby in a babygro all day!! Shock

My daughters wore dresses tights (OMG yes tights!!) babygros and trouser outfits from newborn safe to say it never done them any harm or me I was quite happy to spend the time putting some nice on them! Shoot me!

Nice baby grow for first pictures in hospital, nicest outfit that fits for first pics at home, (on you've bought or which ever gift fits).

Going home from the hospital doesn't matter they will be snuggled up in a blanket in their cat seat or drowned in a snow suit (these are always huge).

Save buying a proper posh outfit until a special occasion, DD1did have a posh frock to meet her great grandma, she pucked on the collar and stained it. The collar also rubed and stuck up, looking daft in photos.

so if you want a posh outfit, don't buy one with a white collar, however cute.

My DS wore a unisex sleepsuit with tiny animals embroidered on it - a gift from MIL & was rather large for him. He was wrapped in the shawl that either my great-aunt or my great-GM made for when my brother was born.

Not sure what to put DS2 in as MIL hasn't given us another sleepsuit! Hopefully he won't need a 'coming home outfit' though, unless I'm expected to dress him in utero! Wink

Far and away the best cute outfits are jersey dresses and tights or leggings and tunics, that are soft comfy, don't mind being scrunched in car seats and don't need ironing.

DH bought both of ours an outfit from the nearest supermarket.

No-one saw us come home, no welcoming committee (fortunately) and both times I was recovering from forceps after tricky births so the outfits were really completely pointless (but DH liked them and it meant he felt he had something to do while I was on the PN ward)

My sister in law's husband hired a limo for her to bring the baby home in. Can't remember the outfits. They were probably new.

We have a little green babygro and I've knitted a matching green hat with frog eyes because he was jumping up and down at his first scan and the whole family have been referring to him by various froggy nicknames ever since.

Personally I actually think tiny babies look cuter in sleepsuits than in anything else. I think newborns in dresses (or baby boys in tiny jeans) look uncomfy and a bit silly - particularly as they tend to have little skinny sparrow legs for the first couple of weeks until they've put more weight on, which look a bit odd sticking out of the bottom of dresses. For me, there's something adorable about a baby in a cute sleepsuit and cardi - comfy and cosy, and they look properly "babylike" - they will be wearing dresses/jeans/dungarees for the rest of their lives, so I like to let them look like proper babies for as long as possible! I have got ds' newborn sleepsuits washed and ready for when dd arrives next month, and I can't wait to see her in them too.

And yes, the thought of trying to wrestle a baby into anything more complex than a vest and sleepsuit so soon after giving birth is completely unrealistic IMO spoken as someone who took hair straighteners in her hospital bag last time, how naive I was

Must admit all of mine were in little white sleep suits - 5 for £2 or something from Tesco! I like the idea of a special shawl or blanket though because you could use it to swaddle at first and then as a pram blanket etc as they grow.

Yes, I have a lovely blanket that MIL knitted which we tucked over ds to bring him home - I will be using that with dd and that will be our little family heirloom. More durable than an outfit and certainly less faff!

Treat yoursef to whatever you think is cute, even if it's Boden it will be worn more than once, and Boden is hard wearing, but (sorry to be a kill joy) you might want to have a standby outfit in case it gets covered in sick or poo just as you leave the hospital.

I don't think I enjoyed these little moments enough though, so I think you should go for it and get one.

I had a sleepsuit with a really nice print and a matching hat from Jojomamanbebe, and a bodysuit in the next size up, then another sleepsuit in the next size up with the same print but different colours (but mine were all born at home so never got to 'come home' in the outfit).

Hahaha special outfit. Babygro, hat/cardy, blanket. Whatever's clean. Don't stress about it. You will be too tired to have the energy to put anything over than a babygro on the wee one. Just remember to take a pic of baby in carseat on hospital bed, that'll do.

Nothing that requires over-the-head. Will just lead to fumbling frustration and a crying baby.

Taking baby home is not really that special, you will be too tired/traumatised/desperate to get home/terrified/wondering if you will leak blood onto the car seat/worried DH will crash the car killing you both instantly leaving DC orphaned in a cruel world

Don't agree after each of my 3 dcs births I have always been lucky enough to feel the best I have in months and on top of the world? I feel sorry for any first time parent reading this thread as basically people like you are saying its not worth making an effort with your child you will feel like crap and finally being able to take you baby home means nothing?...

If this a reflection on your life I feel very sorry for you!

Oh it doesn't have to be an uncomfortable expensive outfit. It can just be a romper you find that's really cute. Equally it doesn't have to be expensive. But it is nice to think what their first or coming home outfit will be. I'm having a homebirth this time, and so don't need a coming home outfit, and I'm just doing romper a for the first 6 months at least, but I've still uhmmed and ahhed over which romper will be the first! my favourite so far happens to be one I bought from a second hand shop, a mothercare one with a cloud print all over.

Dd 6 years ago wore a little prem baby outfit I'd bought in the wrong size by accident from vertbaudet. I put it in the hospital bag just in case, and she ended up being 6lb 7, and even newborn was HUGE on her. It's lovely I've still got that teeny outfit in her keepsake box.

I don't do "outfits" on newborns but I like to buy each of my DC's a new babygrow with a matching hat. Next has some lovely ones in bright colours.

I spent ages picking the perfect 1st outfit for my daughter to wear home from hospital, only she turned out to be tiny and everything literally swamped her. Ended up coming home in a hastily bought tiny baby babygro and a hand knitted cardy done in record time by my auntie. She still looked super cute Smile

Whatever takes your fancy. Personally I can't imagine putting tights on a newborn! They still have umbilical cord etc which you don't want pressure on. Maybe a plain babygro then a dress over the top if you must

Personally I use babygros the first 6 months, then v soft baby trousers/ leggings/ etc until 1. I always use baby vests with poppers right up until potty training also. Sil brought our newborn a proper tuxedo age 0-3 months! I did laugh tbh

We chose a special babygro with embroidered animals on it. It was soft and comfy but beautiful. It now has pride of place in DD's baby box.

OP I have the same little white spotty dress! They do a matching hat too! Just in case you didn't see ;) Booooo to the people who discourage little outfits, live a little! :) I think if you're not too tired, do it! This is my first and if I'm too tired my OH will dress her and if HE is too tired then Nana will do it! Haha I think if I'm honest if I didn't dress our little girl up all pretty my mum would! Why not? It's things like that you look at in the photo's and make you go 'aww'
