Hyperemesis Support

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable.

I would like to thank MOH MOP Ovaltine Caramellokoalalover (I think she's changed her nickname) Fluffy, Horsey Kali and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Have spoken to the ward, so I'm packing a bag again for another admission. Sigh.

Postman has been with a package for DD - nowhere near her birthday so I opened it up to see what it was.... she has won a doll in a magazine competition for designing a slogan so she will be over the moon. So happy for her Smile

LucindaE · 18/02/2013 10:32

Waves You poor, poor thing that is about as high as they can go. Do try and let us know how you are in hospital. So sweet about DD/s doll, that'll cheer her up a little. Those dehydration headaches are murder, as bad as migraines.

~waves~ that sounds just horrible. I must be grateful for the small things (keeping liquids down).

This morning i'm working at home, but started with a long vomiting session so not feeling amazing. Just bile and water but really painful :(

Spoke to head of HR today as my sick note from last week says "morning sickness" and she said she'd send me some information, but was overall very sympathetic and nice (phew). Going to try a long train journey tomorrow..... I'm so terrified :(

LittleMissSnowShine · 18/02/2013 15:33

Hi everyone

Nasty norovirus tailed away into a cold which unfortunately has become a chest infection so also on amoxicillin now but it's a relief because the coughing and wretching was making me throw up and it was keeping me up all night and it's been going on for over a week.

Going to get some vitamin drops too.

It's my birthday tomorrow woo hoo 29! Going away with DH just overnight tomorrow, wee break from DS lol Not feeling great obviously but def better than last week. Trying to stay positive!!! Hope everyone is doing ok today :)

wavesandsmiles · 18/02/2013 16:31

Glad you are on the mend little miss and hope you enjoy your birthday.

I've just been hooked up to the IV fluids, must ask for an anti emetic injection next time I see someone. Ever so busy on the ward and don't want to fuss! Ketones were +5 when tested here, so I guess I'm definitely where I should be

FloweryBoots · 18/02/2013 16:44

Thank you for advice and kind words. Midwife this morning was not my normal one and quickly commented on me still wearing sea sickness bands and within a minute or two was saying I should really consider medication, late prgnancy hard enough to cope with without continued nausea etc. and got me an appointment with the GP for later in the morning. Have been prescribed Metocloramide so we shall see if it helps.

Hope all else on here are having days as well as can be expected.

LucindaE · 18/02/2013 19:06

Waves My goodness, +5, you were in a state, some places admit I think at +2. I hope you are starting to feel a tiny bit better. Is this the third or fourth admission, poor you?
FloSorry about bile and water puking, most unpleasant, and glad you are a home.LitleMiss(thanks). Have as good a birthday as you can.
Flowery So glad you got a helpful midwife, and meds. Do let us know if they help, don't suffer in silence if they don't, there's a lot of choice of meds.

right, havent posted in here yet as didnt think i had it as bad as all of you poor ladies. however, having run out of my sickness tablets on sat ive been very ill, felt really bad y,day, sick twice late last night then got a fresh supply today but ive been sick 15 times already with no sign of it easing :( havent eaten since last night and cant keep fluids down at all today. think when i was sick last time there i may have brought up some blood, was more reddy brown colour which i havent had before, i did try sipping on flat coke earlier but when i was sick after that it was brown in colour. should i stick it out til morn and see how im feeling when i get up?

grumblinalong · 18/02/2013 22:08

Waves to waves checking you found this thread and lovely Lucinda is hand holding. She is the best at HG support.

Sorry for all you poor HG ladies, been there, never going back. Remember 'this too shall pass.'

hayleybootes · 18/02/2013 23:22

First real HG day today lots of voms.... lovely.... where is my energy??? Why am I doing this for the third time?? I'm starting to question this now..... no migraines though today so this is one positive.

Wispa how far gone are you? If youaren't able to keep any fluids down and you are finding it difficult to even get up then I suggest you go over to the hospital asap... you are probably dehydrated and need IV fluids.

Hope everyone is ok
xx

LucindaE · 19/02/2013 09:37

Wispa Welcome, that is awful, that brown blood is a sign it might be from the stomach and should be treated as a medical emergency, red blood tending to be from the throat.Sorry to sound bossy, but I think you should go t o A and E to be checked out asap. tell them about the brown blood, my goodness. You are almost certainly dehydrated and will need IV fluids. Do let us know how you get on.
Hayley Oh no, did you say you had cyclazine? It obviously isn't working, again, I don't want to sound bossy, but do press for a change of meds and keep and eye on those wretched ketones, they can shoot up so quicikly.
Grumblin Lovely to hear from you, and thanks for your kind words! I hope baby, who must be a toddler now, is flourishing and you are fine?
Waves is having a dismal time, it's as bad as it was with Kalidasa, I'm afraid, and her boss has the nerve to believe that somehow she's not 'really' ill.
GlossyFlower' How are things? everyone*?

Oh dear, and Flo was being violently sick too...

Waves to grumblin and says welcome half heartedly to wispa as its not a thread anyone really wants to find themselves on.

Hope that those who are being sick are being sensible and getting straight to GPs!

Well I'm going to be staying in hospital another night at least Sad ketones are still sky high, and still been vomiting. Just had IV ondansetron instead of the painful injection, fx for some time off being sick! I explained the medication/ prescription issue and my consultant has done some research. He is going to have the hospital pharmacy order in the ondansetron that dissolves under the tongue and I won't be going home til it arrives. I've also been told to stop worrying about being a nuisance and that I'm in the right place!

Hoping other people are feeling ok, and getting help if not x

wavesandsmiles · 19/02/2013 09:47

Oh and lucinda I promise to listen to you in future.... I should clearly have got myself back here days ago. But, if it weren't for your clucking, I'd doubtless still be at home and in an even worse state. Thank you Thanks

fl0b0t · 19/02/2013 10:09

Happy birthday snowshine, I hope you have a great time and have no reason to check in here today.

I'm terribly grumpy as on top of everything I've hurt my back- seems to be kinked from too long sitting or lying down.

Felt tearful and tantrum-y last night and slept terribly, but ok so far today and not yet vomited on the train....

wispa31 · 19/02/2013 10:38

morning ladies. was up through night to be sick and not slept well at all, however, only been sick once this morn, managed 2 cups of tea and an ice lolly earlier which so far ive kept down. (for some reason i want either ice cold drinks/lollies or hot tea only) sitting eating a slice of toast and jam so fingers crossed. waiting to go to gp at 11.20 to get checked out. i kept a sample of wee from my first wee of the day and will be taking it with me. hope you are all doing a bit better today too. flobot - ditto on being tearful and tantrumy. waves - make the most of being looked after while in hosp, by sound of things its best place for you just now. you are not being a nuisance, thats what you pay n.i for. lucinda - yes am going to docs, rang them first thing. x

BelleEtLaBaby · 19/02/2013 11:15

Hi ladies - gentle welcome to new faces and hopeful pats to all.

Waves oh, you're back in. You poor thing :( You do sound a little optimistic. If they can really get o top of it this time before sending you home maybe, finally, you'll turn a corner? My first hg lifted around 16 weeks and got much, much more manageable then.

Well, I'm still very dizzy/vertiginous but I am being actually sick much less frequently. My DH has been moving our stuff into our new house this week (hooray!) and I even managed to get over there yesterday and sit on the sofa while my DM did some unpacking. I tentatively think I am improving and I have my 12wk scan on Friday (at 12wks exactly - how organised am I?). I'm a little more cheerful as it was nice to get out of the house and I am looking forward to seeing dc2 on the screen at last :)

LucindaE · 19/02/2013 11:26

Waves I wish I could do more than give cyber encouragement! Thank you so much for flowers, how sweet to think of them when you're so ill, here's some flowers back Thanks. You are too stoic - you are not being a nuisance to the hospital when you have been struggling on with no meds and horribly dehydrated. Lol, for sure this is The Thread Nobody Wants to Need...

Wispa I am clucking about that blood - being sick all night is terrible, and somehow feels even more lonely. Good luck for Dr's.
Flo Hugs. I think you have every reason to feel tearful, with this on top of hormones sky rocketing...The temperature of liquids thing is odd - it was either frozen or lukewarm for me. Lukewarm sips of water often helped...
LittleMiss Thanks to you. Have as good a birthday as you can, I hope no puking and can even do strange things like eat.
A joke someone made a few threads back came back to me; she called 'Domperidone' 'the champagne drug', lol, though she had the misfortune to have it as a suppository, not the best way to imbibe champagne...
Grumblin Had a terrible time, was one of the unlucky minority who suffered throughout (bad not as badly as in the first tri) and had a bit of PTSD too. I remember I actually burst into tears when my daughter was a toddler when I was passing by a bin I'd done some puking in a couple of years before, so I think people tend to be more distraught than they realise.

Hello Lucinda dd is good thanks. We're heading in to terrible 2's-still a doddle compared to coping with HG,2 dc's:and new job. How's your big girl? Facing teens yet?

Sending anti Sicky vibes to all sufferers.

LucindaE · 19/02/2013 19:17

Grumblin Lol, my DD is in her teens indeed! I remember you had to go back to work and share a care with someone with a terror of vomiting, I 've forgotten the medical term. What a stroke of bad luck!
Hayley How are things today? You said it'd kicked in - doesn't sound like the meds are doing their job if so?

Hello All,
Lucinda I had about 4 hours of severe vomiting yesterday, then it went away and have had a few bouts of nausea today but no voms!! Don't want to get too excited as it will come full force when I least expect it. I have tried most meds and i Have strange side affects with most. Last time I was on some anti-sickness medication that they'd never given to a pregnant patient before but I signed a disclaimer and they let me try it, apparently it was the medication that is given to people having chemotherapy, can't remember what it was though, it didn't work. Nothing did.

Question for everyone.... did or has any medication worked for you? If so which medication was it? As soon as my HG hits its peak I will try every single one!!!

Hope everyone is feeling better xxx

wavesandsmiles · 19/02/2013 22:47

Hi hayley I'm on ondansetron/ zofran which has had the most positive effect, it's prime use is in chemo patients. I can't tolerate tablets so in hospital have been having it as injections or IV. New plan is to give me a prescription for dissolvable zofran when I go home, hopefully tomorrow as DD has come down with chicken pox and really needs her mum back!

LucindaE · 20/02/2013 07:53

Waves have you had chicken pox? You probably have, and you probably know this, but it's as well to tell the hospital that you're going home to a chicken pox case when your pregnant just in case. Poor DD, though! I o hope these meds work and you're feeling a bit better, but you're hardly in a state to do nursing!
Hayley That's the spirit! It looks as though, with your case history of failed meds, they'll go for the most effective as they've already tried everything before.
Hope Everyone is surviving today.

I have had chicken pox, and have let the consultant and midwives know, they aren't worried since I've had it.

Still on a drip, still being sick. Todays chap described it as my lifeline. Whilst I'm in hospital retching and vomiting the drip is keeping me in balance as the fluid is replaced. I've been told that basically none of the anti emetics will be amazing, so unless the HG goes away of its own accord this looks set to be my second home for now.

I'll be home once my new medication arrives, and see how I go, although I'll have a few hours off the drip here first. Could be today, could be tomorrow. Heard the baby's heartbeat last night which was really good, I feel so sick and look so UNpregnant still, it reminded me why I am sick and that it will all be worth it come July!
