Thought of starting a new thread called Jasper's embarrassing pregnancy aches.
Sore hips, heartburn, and now piles.
I have had them mildly off and on throughout my pregnancy, but have kept the really awful ones at bay by drinking fibogel, eating plenty of fibre, and not "straining at stool" - lovely euphemism.
However today they have blown up with a vengeance. Look away now if you have a weak stomach - it is like having two grapes poking out my bahookie. They are agony. I had to come home early from work as I could neither sit down nor walk. I came home and lay on my side and cried!
A hot bath helps, but only when I am in it. I have tried about four types of creams - preparation H, Proctosedyl, nupericaine, and Anusol ( some of these were on prescription fom last time around),.These all help a little.
Also tried cold compresses, witch hazel, arnica ( all worse than useless)
Last preganancy this acute phase lasted about three days.Im not sure my sanity will hold out. I may have to stop work and sit in the bath day and night!
I tried the search function as I am sure you are all sick to death of my ailments but the only piles mentioned were piles of laundry.
My dh helpfully offered to get out the wire brush and dettol. I know it was his way of trying to make me laugh, but I just started crying again. Mind you it certainly takes my mind off the achey hips.
Any good ideas?

I remember reading about some artic explorer who had them like a bunch of grapes and pushed them back in himself...

If you do find anything of any use (unlike the above) do let us know. I had forgotten about all these lovely side symptoms and need to jog my memory.

Did anything work for the heartburn?

jasper · 10/01/2002 23:50

Yes , the heartburn was forgotten amid the agony of the piles. Seriously, it has subsided a bit of its own accord and I have upped the dose of Ranitidine.
Thanks all for the tips.
I had really forgotten how awful the home stretch can be.

Having tried most of the above after the birth of my daughter, the most effective remedy was cypress oil, only a couple of drops, in a small bottle of water. Shake it really well and apply with cotton wool throughout the day. It has an astringent effect which tightens things up nicely. Still took a while mind.

Are piles compulsory during pregnancy? I don't "do" piles. I can't have them, noooooooooooooo!

Piffleoffagus · 18/05/2004 14:34

for anyone on iron supplements do not take ferrous sulphate if you can avoid it, there is a mineral water supplement from health shops and larger chemists called spatone, it is better, it works and it dos not leave you constipated!
Prune juice girls, its sweet, nice and it keeps the piles away

mummysurfer · 18/05/2004 14:38

this was me 4 weeks ago but no pregnancy.....someone on another thraed said get 'Proctofoam' - demand it and accept nothing else.
i did and it worked - couldn't beliec=ve it as 10 years ago i had them to the same degree and was in so much agony some friends
who are GPs said 'go to casualty'. i did and they kept me in and operated!!! thought the same would happen this time.
i'v e always found a hot bath makes them worse once your out of it.
germaloid cream too - found this gives the best relief but doesn't make them go away. ask your GP for an emregency appointment today and cry there too

hope you get sorted out soon

monkeygirl · 18/05/2004 14:40

My midwife gave me a prescription for pessaries and pile cream just after I gave birth. I didn't even realise I had them and was horrified that they must have been dangling away for everyone in the delivery room to see (for a while I had my back to everyone whilst holding on to the bed to push dd out)!

here

Hi,
I posted a similar thread a while back. I had them really bad over easter and like you couldnt sit down or walk. I found it was worse when I was trying to sit or stand. My MIL suggested the rubber ring but I didnt have the energy to walk through town like John Wayne to buy one. I tried germaloid and then went to the doctors for something stronger. Although 1 hour sat on a plastic chair nearly brought me to tears. I found using wet wipes after the loo easier than loo roll. I also had the opposite problem and wasnt constipated but needed to go about 3 times a day which didnt help!! The pain eased after 3 days ive still got the piles, but at least they no longer hurt. Im just dreading going into labour and the MW's all getting a good look. I never realised that they could be sooooo painful.

twogorgeousboys · 19/05/2004 00:05

I think I will have to have surgery on mine as I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle with them.

On the moist toilet tissue wipes front, when mine are really bad I use the germoloid wipes as I can't put anything else near them. They are really expensive but do have a cooling, slight anaesthetising effect.

Lots of sympathy and empathy! Can't add anything new here as all my ideas have already been given but I sooooo know how you feel. Got them after DS1 was born (hadn't had them in pregnancy) but got them while pg with DS2. Very weirdly I thought they had crept round the front (IYKWIM) only to find out after the GP had a look that I actually had vulval varicose veins...really hope you don't get them as well as I wouldn't wish them on anyone!

mummysurfer · 19/05/2004 00:21

to all of you

please try the Proctofoam it really was amazing

LuciaM · 22/05/2004 13:56

Hi
I'm in Italy and I asked my GP about Proctofoam and she said that they don';t adivse it for pregnant women. Is that just the italians being over cautious?
PS: find the rubber ring really does make a difference though I do feel about 100 years old using it!

Rhubarb76 · 21/01/2008 16:33

Hello

Haven't been able to walk or sit or sleep since Friday night - due to an attack of the dreaded piles - it just seems so wrong to have these big bulbous things hanging out of my butthole!! Comforting to hear other Mum's complaining too - it feels so lonely being in so much pain!

DonDons · 21/01/2008 19:07

GP recommended Sudocreme of all things (which is known in our family as bum cream!).... worked a treat though - after about 5 days. GP said all the other stuff is crap.

Have a read of this to cheer yourself up....

That was so funny DonDons. Was laughing and crossing my legs at the same time!

Rhubarb76 · 22/01/2008 08:47

Ouch! But what a result! Have never known anything like it, amateurarsedoctor is a legend!

One question - how do you explain to a three year old that the reason you can't play super heroes anymore is because you have a bum prolapse?

marybrew · 15/08/2009 20:33

I am 34weeks pregnant and got 2 piles over a week ago was useing cream but did notting for me , had to go back to doctors on firday were she cut them open and took out the two blood clots , now i am in very bad pain were they are swollon and very sore , i wouldnt wish them on anyone .

MonicaC · 27/09/2010 17:02

If the piles are always reappearing and do not go away after the birth, you can also look for hospitals performing Transanal Hemorrhoidal Dearterialisation (THD). It's a new surgical technique which doesn't cut or remove any tissues and is hence a lot gentler (usually done in the outpatients' department). Should be available in the US and in the UK in quite some hospitals already.
