I stupidly forgot my notes for my scan specificallly for the nt test today so they refused to do it and now i cant have it

so annoyed

I have been offered a blood test at 14 weeks, i was just wondering if this is something all ladies are offered? also is this and the result of the NT scan what they use to calculate the risk score or is it only based on one or the other?

Well I've never had a nt scan before, it's always been just blood tests and then more offered if bloods showed anything, this will be the first pregnancy where I've had the scan aswell as test. So I would have thought they will just do it how they used to for you. Very sorry you didn't get your scan and good luck with your blood test and the rest of your pregnancy x

thanks tinkypeet...

The nf scan wasn't offered to everyone when I was pregnant (I didn't get it). Everyone was offered the blood test though (is much cheaper) and a dating scan.

How it is intended to work is by using Bayes' theorem to combine the results from the NF measurement, the blood test results and maternal age. The blood test is to measure a protein level for which they need very accurate fetal age (being a week out on your dates would give you a result that would look very worrying as the protein is supposed to rise during pregnancy). This is why they need to give a "12 week" dating scan.

  • I am looking at this from a statistics perspective. You should probably speak to your midwife to find out what will be done.
pillowupmyjumper · 19/12/2012 00:36

I'm just so annoyed, they had clearly already seen it after attempting to do the test last thursday and it's the whole reason i went back

i'm just worried about the accuracy of it and the potential need for more invasive test because of a lack of a bit of blooming cardboard

maybe just being a worry wart

They couldn't take a measurement at my NT scan as the baby wouldn't shift into the right position. I was offered the blood test (I think the triple test) and googling showed a relatively high false positive rate so I had a private OSCAR scan instead.

Tinselandchocolates · 19/12/2012 07:29

I would complain and see if there's anything they can do. If not I'd pay for one privately (about £100 I think). The nuchal scan was very important to me to reduce anxiety levels, but appreciate its not for everyone.
Hope you manage to sort something that helps.

pillowupmyjumper · 19/12/2012 07:39

i have been up all night and come to the same conclusion re private scan... thanks for all the advice.

this is partly my fault for forgetting notes - I was happily sitting in recepetion, full bladder, smiling away, until i saw another woman clutching her bloody blue binder...

i got the impression, when i phoned the mid wife later that she was quite cross with them as she was easily able to fax it over for them

damn it, £100, just before christmas ... might need to sweet talk somone Xmas Grin

My NHS trust (Gloucestershire) doesn't do NT at all. Is just two blood tests. This worried me at first as everyone else seems to have th scan. According to my midwife the only difference is you get the results earlier under NT. So only worth getting the private test if you are worried about needing to terminate a bit later if that's what you'd do. But if it would help you worry less it's worth it Xmas Smile

FestiveDigestive · 19/12/2012 09:03

How annoying. I forgot my notes for the 12 week scan (had NT at that scan) and I was scolded for forgetting them. But they still did DVD scan and just gave me the print out to put into my notes when I got home. It seems a bit ridiculous that they refused to do it. Surely there's nothing relevant in your notes yet that they actually need? If you've already had a scan then they should have the results on the computer anyway. I hope you can rearrange it.

FestiveDigestive · 19/12/2012 09:04

Did THE scan, I don't know why it says DVD!

HousewifefromBethlehem · 19/12/2012 09:07

I was refused an amnio because I forgot my notes

OodKingWenceslas · 19/12/2012 09:27

When I had my first scan I didn't have notes yet and was just given the paperwork. Seems OTT to waste a scan appt over them

Phineyj · 19/12/2012 09:44

They are always telling me off for forgetting the stupid bottle of wee. Like it can't be produced on site in the 2 hours they normally keep you waiting!! Grr, am annoyed on your behalf as I can tell from the daft questions they ask that they never read my blooming notes anyway! P.S. Shop around for scans as it's quite competitive and in the town where I had mine done I found out later there is a cheaper place down the road that my midwife said would have been perfectly okay.

UltimateDetermination · 19/12/2012 09:53

Sorry to thread hijack but after reading the thread I'm worried about my own scan tomorrow - I don't even have any notes (booking in appt isn't for another month) - does that mean that they might not do the NT test?! I'm 12 weeks and in Scotland if that makes a difference, and should be getting the CUBS test

pillowupmyjumper · 19/12/2012 09:55

why do you need a special consent form for this test ... it seems a bit odd as they will do other tests during the scan which could give you equally bad news

or indeed any test you go for

and i don't know why they don't have a digital record of anything... your about to have your insides scanned with sound waves (Confused) and the most important thing is a flappy blue folder, which everything falls out of which in my case already states, quite incorrectly, that i consume 6 units of alcohol a week!

pillowupmyjumper · 19/12/2012 10:32

Husband just rang the ultrasound dept and they said that the baby looks good and that it would be quite apparent if i was high risk and she doesn't think i am

the private scans were coming out at 200+ so i will be have to just have the blood test and NEVER FORGET NOTES AGAIN !!!

Ultimate, i'm in Scotland too but don't know what to suggest. In Edinburgh, as i understand it, you get a booking in appointment at 8 ish weeks where you will be presented with the folder.

my woes were caused because i left the aforementioned folder on the hallway table... call your midwife if your concerned but i'm sure you will be fine

UltimateDetermination · 19/12/2012 10:55

Thanks Pillow How many weeks are you? What were your reasons for getting the NT? Were you offered a CUBS? I understand if you are 35 or over in Scotland you can be offered CUBS.

UltimateDetermination · 19/12/2012 10:56

And by 'DS' I mean downs syndrome, not darling son.

pillowupmyjumper · 19/12/2012 11:33

I'm 13 weeks 2 days and was already back for a second go when this happened so i think it's not a case of them refusing per say it's just that i will be past the deadline be the time the next appointment becomes available...

With regard to reasons, I think i would just like to know either way and see how i feel after that.

i'm not high risk to begin with as i'm 29, this is perhaps why i wasn't offered anything more than the blood test after the blue folder incident.

i have to admit i'm not in as much of a flap about it now after contacting the ultra sonographer.

I'm sorry you're having a bad experience Ultimate, this should be a happy time for you and importantly it shouldn't be causing you stress

i hope it gets sorted out soon... it sounds like an annoying situation

elliejjtiny · 19/12/2012 13:19

I had my dating scan before my booking appointment so I didn't have any notes. I was offered the NT scan but I didn't want that so the sonographer just dated me and gave me the report to stick in my notes when I get them.

FoofFighter · 19/12/2012 13:24

CUBS?

CaseyShraeger · 19/12/2012 13:43

Ultimate, they won't be able to gauge risk as such but they may well know whether the nuchal fold looked unusually thick and whether a nasal bone was present - if both of those are low risk and the OP's bloods come back low risk she can be pretty confident that the combined risk that would have come back would be low risk too, although she won't know the exact number that would have come back.

I'm surprised they wouldn't do it, to be honest. Having the OP's notes there hardly seems essential.

3rdtimelucky73 · 19/12/2012 14:11

mysterymeg

I'm in Glos too, but have had an NT scan as standard - maybe it is different for different hospitals or different risks.....

lauraellajane · 20/12/2012 07:57

Ultimate in my area (Norfolk) they do the nuchal test as part of the 12 wk/dating scan - it's just an extra measurement. Afterwards I was sent to the blood clinic for a sample, then they use both results to send you a risk rating in the post.

I would definitely be complaining! Not everyone has the luxury of being able to pay for a private scan so they shouldn't be allowed to get away with it - especially since your midwife said she could fax over the notes which suggests she's had to do that before Hmm

lauraellajane · 20/12/2012 07:59

Oh actually Ultimate I think I see what you were saying - you mean if they hadn't taken the measurement at the dating scan how would they guess just from looking?
