Severe pain in breast/rib

Hoping someone can reassure me this is another of those pregnancy symptoms that is nothing to worry about.....

Im 23+2. Since Tuesday I've been getting a severe sharp pain which at first I thought was my breast. Seemed to be at the bottom of the breast near my bra band. I bought new softer bra's on Weds but am still getting the pain and its getting worse. I'm no longer sure whether its the bottom of my breast tissue or the ribs underneath that are the source of the pain - all i know is its really very painful. It seems to get worse as the day goes on, and isn't really eased by taking my bra off.

Definitely planning to go to my GP on Mon if its no better, as its starting to really get me down. Anyone else had something similar?

I should have mentioned its only on one side - the left - so not all the way across my ribs if that makes any difference Smile

Hi love hope this helps but I am 30 weeks and last week I had a terrible sharp pain under my left breast/top of my ribs, it got steadily worse so I went to the gp, she confirmed what many mumsnetters had said that it was rib pain where the babies head is ramming into my ribs, she said it was a strain of muscle and tissue and although painful it would ease pnce bub moved which she has. I felt awlful for bothering her but she said no I was right to get it checked out as you should, it was scary but is much better now, hope this helps love xx

Hi

I totally sympathise as I had this too, on my left side and it was so sore. It lasted about 5 weeks and was worse at night. Once baby moved down, am now 33 weeks it has been so much better. Hope your wee one moves soon and you get some relief.

Xo

Thanks so much for the reassurance MJP and Newbie Smile

Think I will still get checked out by my GP on Mon to be on the safe side, but you've put my mind at rest that its highly likely to just another one of the weird and wonderful symptoms of this pregnancy lark Grin

I went to.the gp and he said it was a pulled muscle, pain will go.in a wk. 3wks later I went to see a chiropractor as pain still just as bad and he helped enough that I can lie on that side now.

Rib Flare
Hope baby shifts position and you feel better soon.
Best to get checked out by your GP anyway though.

I have pain in exactly the same place and it is due to a hiatus hernia I developed in my first pregnancy. Feels like someone has stuck their finger into my rib just where my bra sits. Omeprazole a is the only thing to help this pain for me.

Hi,

sorry you are going through this.
I'm 36 weeks and getting the same thing but only at night, on the right hand side.

I think it's costal margin pain - when your ribs start to spread out. Seeing as you're earlier on than me I'd maybe think it was part of the baby pushing into you, they have more room to move at that stage!

I find if I lie on my left (so the opposite side) with a cushion under my middle, it goes away.

See what the GP says, but in the meantime you could give that a try.

Thanks so much for all your replies. Very much appreciated Smile

Meanwhile I've come up with the idea of putting one of those gel eye masks that you chill in the fridge underneath my bra band. It's bliss Grin

Try standing in front of a wall, holding onto your elbows with opposite hands, putting them above your head then leaning against the wall with them, sliding your arms up the wall (so your upper arms are getting a stretch) to as high as is comfortable.

Does that offer any relief?

WendyWillow · 09/12/2012 10:50

I'd get it check ed to see if it is just normal coastal margin pain. If it is the midwife suggested to me that sitting backwards on hard backed chairs with your arms along the top can relieve the pressure, also sit on a yoga ball instead if sofa. I've had this since week 16, now week 30, can't wait for baby to move down and give me some space back!

Hi there I am now 28weeks with second pregnancy but I had this 6/7 weeks ago thought it was very odd (v different pain to usual bloating/ tenderness or any other pain I had had before). Went to the doctors he did a breast exam, said nothing to worry about and it went away a few weeks later.
