MATB1 Form?

When are you supposed to get this? I had my 16wk appointment yesterday but it was with a stand in mw, and they didn?t really seem to know where anything was or what they were doing, and it was all very rushed. Anyway, I don?t get another appointment with the mw now till 28 weeks (but I do have 20wk scan and a consultant appointment at 22 wks) but surely 28 wks is too late? You need to have informed work by 25wks?

It?s my 2nd pregnancy so you don?t get may appointments, but I?m sure I got it at around 18/20 wks last time? Unless they will give it to me at hospital? I guess I?d better ring my normal mw.

20 Weeks. I didn't have an appointment then with the midwife so picked it up at my next one, but she said I could've popped in and picked it up if it was urgent. Luckily my employer wasn't fussed.

chocolatesolveseverything · 27/11/2012 10:10

Yes, you can't get one until 20 weeks before your EWC at the earliest, so ask your midwife if you can pick one up in about a month.

cheesesavory · 27/11/2012 10:11

Brill thanks, I'll put a note in my diary to pick one up after 20 weeks :)

I've been told I can't get it until 28 wks as I won't see the mw before then. My work seems ok with this but it bugs me that the NHS don't feel any need to help you meet your legal obligations as an employee. Doesn't help in situations where the employer's not happy about mat leave. Angry

Splinters · 27/11/2012 11:20

Bit of a stupid situation where the DWP says when you can have it and the NHS says who can give it to you and when you can see them.. Please protest LOUDLY if you're told you can't have it when you need it.

nancerama · 27/11/2012 11:23

I was told the same. I made a fuss and low and behold, one was left for me at reception the following day.

cheesesavory · 27/11/2012 11:33

Philbee can you not just get them to give you one at reception? that's rubbish!

OP posts:
Splinters · 27/11/2012 11:37

I don't think you can get it at reception as it has to be signed etc by midwife or doctor. But at 22 weeks I said I needed mine asap so they made me an appointment at the next MW clinic.

iamwhaticallpregnant · 27/11/2012 11:38

I got mine at 26 weeks.

Chopsypie · 27/11/2012 11:40

I was told to wait until 28wks, or could go along to a the midwife drop in clinic after 20 weeks and get it then.

mrsbugsywugsy · 27/11/2012 11:42

I got mine at my 24 week appointment, so just in time.

bonzo77 · 27/11/2012 11:46

My gp did mine. She knew I was pg. I couldn't be arsed didn't want to waste her time with an appointment so wrote her a very polite letter requesting the form. I gave her a week then collected it from reception. I was about 30 weeks at that point, but really should have done it earlier.

ZuleikaD · 27/11/2012 11:47

You don't need your MATB1 to inform your employer, your MATB1 is so that you can claim statutory maternity pay via your employer's payroll system (and in fact you can claim it several weeks after your baby is born). You can inform your employer verbally or in writing.

birdbrain17 · 27/11/2012 11:47

I'm 21 weeks. My next appointment is when I am 25 weeks but it's in the christmas hols so by the time I get back to work I will be 27 weeks. Is that too late to hand it in? I already told them I'm pg but haven't discussed maternity leave yet (this is my first dc so I'm still learning what I need to do)

noblegiraffe · 27/11/2012 11:54

I phoned up, they filled one out and left it for me at reception and I popped in and picked it up.

I'd rather work had it by 25 weeks than worrying that I wouldn't get paid!

unexpectediteminbaggingarea · 27/11/2012 12:14

matb1 is nothing to do with your statutory duty to inform your employer of pregnancy. Your matb1 allows your employer to claim back some elements of your maternity pay. No-one can issue it before 20 weeks and no-one should issue it without having examined you at some point in the pregnancy.

OP just inform work whenever you want (providing it's before 25 weeks) and give them the Matb1 when you get it. 28 weeks is plenty of time for them to sort out payroll. If you're desperate for it before your next appointment just leave a message with your midwife or GP asking them to leave one for you.

iamwhaticallpregnant · 27/11/2012 12:27

I only need one to apply for Maternity Allowance from the Government.

philbee · 27/11/2012 13:31

My work said it was fine to wait. I didn't realise informing them was separate but did that several months ago and have given them a date to start my mat leave, so assume everything's ok. I'll just wait until 28 weeks and give it to them then. I have to make a trip to go and see the midwife, as am booked into a hospital further away, so it's just more hassle.

cheesesavory · 27/11/2012 14:11

Ok thanks, I thought you needed to hand it in to your employer at 25 weeks, good to know that?s not actually the case.

I changed jobs at 30 weeks, I let my new (I had previously worked there) manager over the phone know I was pregnant and then sent a letter. Then on my first day at work 30+ weeks I handed in my MAT B1 form with the relevant paperwork for my employer. HR then proceeded to loose my MAT B1 and paperwork, then after getting another one from my midwife at 34 weeks they also lost that one! I had photocopied it beforehand and payroll then accepted this. I had to apply for maternity allowance anyway but needed my HR and payroll to fill out a form for me to send to DWP after they had a copy of the MAT B1. I managed to get my maternity allowance sorted the day before I gave birth but it was sooooo very stressful. My manager wrote a complaint to the HR dept. as this had happened too often. Luckily this time round its all running a bit more smoothly! So anyway, as long as your HR dept are not loosing documents left right and centre you've got plenty of time, but sooner rather than later is always best! Sorry for the waffle!

mrsbugsywugsy · 27/11/2012 14:40

Another thing to bear in mind is my DP also needed it to apply for his paternity allowance. My work wanted the original, but luckily his would accept a photocopy.

I'm not and employee, I'm a funded PhD student, and my university did actually require the MatB1 along with the maternity leave forms, by 25 weeks. So as TT says, definitely worth checking with work.

ZuleikaD · 28/11/2012 11:02

Your employer has no right to demand your MATB1 by 25 weeks.

nancerama · 28/11/2012 21:42

I was entitled to a first class upgrade (and therefore, for the first time in 6 years of commuting, a seat) from 25 weeks with my MAT B1. I made sure I got mine as soon as I could!
