Almost feels like tempting fate to come on the PG board after so long TTC and after two failed IVFs this year and a CP in the summer.
But my lovely g/f is 6 weeks pg today, following our most recent IVF.
She's had very bad nausea 24/7 for the last 4 days. She's not been sick but has hardly been able to eat a thing. She's also very tired all the time and has been for 2 weeks. Is it OK to
feel this rough? She's concerned that, at her advanced age (she'll kill me if she reads this), this constant bad nausea is not good.
Anyone else of around the same vintage suffered very bad nausea at this stage?
Obviously, we're worrying about every single little thing after 5 years TTC....
to eat anything. Is this n

OMG, congratulations paolo and DP :) :) :)

I remember your last thread.

Normal, normal, normal

I felt like that at the start of all my pregnancies.

It's grim, but it's actually a good sign.

Jakeyblueblue · 21/11/2012 08:23

Yes normal. Makes you feel like nothing on earth for the first few weeks.
It's a great sign that all the right hormones are doing all the right jobs!
Congratulations Smile

worsestershiresauce · 21/11/2012 08:53

39 isn't so old these days. It's pretty average where I am - so tell her not to worry on that front. I'm (ahem) 40 Grin

Nausea is sadly normal. I do a fine line in midnight projectile vomiting. My DH is a saint, he gets up, cleans up, and gives me a hug. That kind of support makes it all seem ok.

ReindeerBollocks · 21/11/2012 10:16

This is all reassuring. The horrendous effects of pregnancy are taking their toll, but it sounds completely normal.

Try simple, soft foods. Biscuits, dry toast or milkshakes if she really can't eat. It should start to pass around 12 - 14weeks.

Congratulations to both of you.

paolocee · 21/11/2012 10:48

Thanks you guys. Very reassuring. Constipation is very bad too (she told me to tell you that).

This site has been a godsend to understand that quite frankly everyone is different, but there is bound to be someone out there that has had the same symptoms as you!
Yes to nausea but not actually being sick - even to the point that I'm retching over the toilet but nothing bloody comes up.
Yes to being tired, by the time I'm in from work and got myself sorted out I seem to collapse on the sofa at 7/8ish and will sleep/doze till boyfriend insists I go to bed - its all I do in the evenings!
Digestion is all gone to pot - from a nice regular system am varying from one extreme to another now!

The best part - knowing that a little life is growing and the pleasant surprise at how useful my boyfriend has been around the house while I sleep every evening!

PeshwariNaan · 21/11/2012 14:00

Congratulations!

I was severely ill for 5 months (nausea, vomiting, exhaustion all constant). I was told over and over by medical professional that the sicker I felt, the healthier baby was likely to be - i.e., my hormones were doing what they were supposed to and supporting the new life.

Don't be worried - illness is better than normal, sadly, it seems to be beneficial unless your partner is not keeping anything down.

Try granola bars, toast, mild fruits like bananas and tinned peaches, oatcakes or crisps, mild cheeses and plain live yoghurt, biscuits in the a.m. The seasickness bands took the edge off a bit.

PeshwariNaan · 21/11/2012 14:01

Oh, and prunes, flax seed in live yoghurt and bran flakes for constipation!

worsestershiresauce · 21/11/2012 14:17

Orange juice, oat bran, and plenty of exercise (walking, swimming not marathon running obviously) help get the gut moving.

SchroSawMummyRidingSantaClaus · 21/11/2012 14:19

I'm 21 and had my DS at 20. I was like that the entire way through, even sick in labour.

It is normal and apparently (I've heard), it's actually a good sign as means there is a high level of pregnancy hormone.

nannyl · 21/11/2012 16:43

it could be HG

I am currently 10 weeks pg and i have not eaten a meal (and barely eaten anything at all) for 3.5 weeks now and counting.

I had the same when pregnant last time, and my baby is fine

i am medicated to try and help me stay out of hospital due to dehdration, due to vomitting everything then hypersalivating more....
if she thinks she is dehydrating them go to dr (or A&E) who will admit to hospital for IV fluids

oh and its fine for her to ear whatever she wants / can stomache..... last time i went over month without any fruit or veg in any form, the only things i ate were burgers chips and chocolate

this time on the rare occasion i can eat its tinned peaches and wholemeal cream cheese sandwhiches and cherry bakewells so marginally better

Mollydoggerson · 21/11/2012 16:47

Congratulations - It could be twins!!

paolocee · 22/11/2012 03:23

Molly, oh my, what makes you say that? Thanks for the other kind and supportive words. We (note the royal 'we') are feeling a little better now.

Congratulations on the pregnancy. As others have said the nausea is perfectly normal. I had terrible sickness with both of my pregnancies & found sipping either lucozade or lemon barley water really helpful. I had anti emetics prescribed second time round but I don't know if they would be any good with nausea as opposed to vomiting.

And it's perfectly normal to feel wretched & sorry for yourself even though the pregnancy is exactly what you want & the best thing to ever happen to you! Grin

lookingfoxy · 22/11/2012 07:48

Op im 37 and have been feeling like this for the last 5 weeks, so bad i've been signed off work, been stuck in the house for this length of time and too ill to even have 'cabin fever' which I usually get after 24hrs in the house!
Re the constipation - I got lactulose from my gp, just called up and they left me a prescription, but i've had it previously when preg so your other half might have to make an appt. Thankfully the sickness/feeling like death and constipation is now starting to ease up, I don't know if its the initial rush of hormones in early preg but it is bloody grim feeling like that!!

paolocee · 22/11/2012 10:31

Thanks. It seems nausea is (in the context of a successful pregnancy, anyway), a "good thing". I really hope that's true.
She's currently hugging a bucket but has yet to really trouble its interior thankfully.

Mollydoggerson · 22/11/2012 16:47

Paolocee, I think the nausea is worse with twins, as you have higher levels of hormones in your system.

Also the nausea is a protective measure, turns you off lots of food that could be harmful to you.

All the above is afaik.

Dogsmom · 22/11/2012 16:53

Likelihood of twins increases with age too Grin

I'm 37 and had rotten nausea but couldn't be sick, it drove me mad, it was 24/7 and lasted from week 5-15, pretty much ruined the summer and our holidays as I felt so rough, however it's a positive sign so tell her to keep focused and remember it will pass, eventually.

I'm past that stage now (24 weeks) and am eating 4/5 oranges and satsumas a day and it's doing the trick 'bowel wise'.

paolocee · 23/11/2012 10:23

Twins, cripes. Well, in for a penny, in for a thousand pounds.

OhGood · 23/11/2012 10:45

Congrats! I am 8 weeks with no 2 and SICK as a dog - and really a bit concerned about all this talk of twins...

I think it's supposed to lift at 12ish weeks when the placenta is fully established, or something, and last time round I did just feel magically better at around 14ish weeks... so there is hope.

And as you say all the old wives say ms means you are having a good strong pregnancy.

Good luck, eat what you need to to survive, and congrats again, such great news for you! Grin

paolocee · 29/11/2012 18:25

We've had the 7 week scan - it's only bloody twins! In utter shock.

nannyl · 29/11/2012 18:30

wow

congratulations

AThingInYourLife · 29/11/2012 18:34

:o

As scary as that is, it is wonderful, wonderful news :)

I'm delighted for you both.

How's she feeling now?

Awful, I hope Wink (not really)

How are you feeling?

RooneyMara · 29/11/2012 18:39

Paolo that's brill news Smile

I'm also 39 and on my third, felt dreadful for the first 20 weeks or so - but now I'm ok, and due after Christmas.

Twins will probably be making her feel worse due to increased hormones...poor love...tell her that taking medication is normally VERY safe so if she is unable to function then certainly ask for something.

I took metoclopramide this time, it's the bees knees and I wasn't sick, but I still felt very sick - it's just reassuring being able to eat stuff, iyswim. (I lost weight in first two pregnancies, in the first few months)
(this time I put on 2 stone) Blush

Hope everything goes well for you all x

MightBeMad · 29/11/2012 18:46

Paola that is amazing news!!!!
