Can I somehow stop my belly button from popping out?

Im 24 weeks pregnant. Over the last few days I've noticed my belly button getting flatter and it feels as if it might 'pop' outward very soon. It's painful and feels very sensitive, almost as if somebody is poking their finger INTO my belly button. I know this sounds stupid, is there any trick I can use to prevent it coming out? Oh it's just so ICK.

Mine never popped. Couldn't bear it being touched though. Especially when they'd press down with the ultra sound thingies, urgh.

HoneyDragon · 25/10/2012 14:00

Mine never popped. But at 35 weeks dh insisted I remove my piercing as he was convinced I would sneeze or laugh and it would ricochet off and become embedded in his skull.

DeeMonic · 25/10/2012 14:05

Mine didn't pop out but it was a close call. I just slathered my bump on cocoa butter on a regular basis. :)

filetheflightoffancy · 25/10/2012 15:17

I have always had an inny, and when I was pregnant I was waiting to my belly button to either pop right out and make a little bump or do what I remember my mum's doing and just go really flat with a swirly bit where the belly button once was, eeeeek!

It actually did neither - in the end it just about stayed as an inny, although there was a teeny sticky out bit at the top that I could sort of flick! God I havent explained that well have I....

Am laughing at the idea of death by ricocheting belly button piercing honeydragon Grin

filetheflightoffancy · 25/10/2012 15:18

Oh and its totally back to normal now, phew!

Splinters · 25/10/2012 15:28

I'm not really looking forward to attending to the baby's belly button either. I hope it heals up quickly!

Happybunny12 · 25/10/2012 16:20

Yes, the baby's belly button is grim until the tag falls off, isn't it? Especially by day 6 or so. Makes me feel a bit sick remembering, actually.

HoneyDragon · 25/10/2012 16:42

Dds fell off Christmas morning during a 3am nappy change. We told Ds Santa had bought her a belly button for Xmas Grin

Agree that it is a bit grim, but the shiny new belly button is luffly.

QuenHelle · 25/10/2012 16:53

DS's fell off after about 5 days. My friend was changing his nappy at the time because it made me feel so sick and squirmy by that point.

He's 3.4 now and still has a little stump bit sticking up in it. It still makes me feel squirmy.

Thumbwitch · 25/10/2012 17:26

Honey, you never cease to entertain with your anecdotes! PMSL at "ricochet off and become embedded in his skull" Grin

Mine never popped out, just became very flat and stretched (it's a very tidy inny usually).

However, word of warning re. baby's bellybutton - even after the cord stump has dropped off, the belly button can still ooze/bleed - DS2's is still occasionally bleeding now at 2w old, but the GP says it's "normal granulation" and isn't infected or anything to worry about. It just needs to be cleaned out with soft cotton wool, which is also a bit yuk, having to sort that out.

fraktion · 25/10/2012 17:44

Thumb congratulations on DS2!!! So pleased for you Grin

instantfamily · 25/10/2012 18:32

readystead - surgery! how? what? where?

Don't want to scare you, OP, but my once beautiful innie looks like a mini-penis sticking out of crepey skin Sad !

Pleasenomorepeppa · 25/10/2012 18:33

Mine popped out at about 32 weeks. Then popped back in two weeks later. I was worried so rang the MW to explain. Once she'd told all of her colleagues & they'd all finished laughing she told me that it was all fine!

Rowanhart · 25/10/2012 20:12

It's not inevitable. 37 weeks and no belly button change for me!

HoneyDragon · 25/10/2012 20:18

Seriously he was convinced he'd die before becoming a father through shrapnel. Useless during pregnancy he was, useless Grin

Mandy2003 · 25/10/2012 20:59

Pregnancy - in.

13 years later - umbilical hernia - out.

Doctor: we don't repair them now, it's the budget cuts Sad

Mixxy · 25/10/2012 23:44

Was rather hoping baby's belly button ickiness would be offset by cuteness factor. The idea of having a "mini penis" protrude from my tummy makes me very unhappy. I've doubled up on the cocoa butter slathering.

Mine popped out, but did eventually go back in (took about 7 months).

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 26/10/2012 01:04

Mine never popped out and looks pretty much the same 6 years on as it ever did, normal to me anyway! So there is hope for those who are worried!

But I did use loads of moisturiser on my bump, I didn't realise at the time it might help the button, I was just trying to stop stretch marks (didn't get any of those either) but now I'm glad I did!

SamraLee · 26/10/2012 02:43

Mine stayed an in. The skin around it just got a bit darker. My baby is almost 4 months and it's pretty much back to normal, still a bit darker. Could be because I use to be about 4 stone heavier so my stomach/belly button had already been stretched out. Also a lot of people didn't even notice I was pregnant until about 30 weeks when I started to get a proper round belly, had a tiny baby!

bringonthetrumpets · 26/10/2012 03:35

Hmm, yeah already been cursed with an outie. It just turns into what resembles a giant nose by around 20 weeks. I just put a plaster on it so that you can't see it through my shirt!

IsSpringSprangedYet · 26/10/2012 03:45

Mine has popped out and never went back in. My pregnancies were / are quite close though. Although I never lost my tummy between pregnancies, so maybe that was why.

Giddypants · 26/10/2012 09:37

I must share this: my oldest friend had a tummy tuck after her first pregnancy, and vowed never to have anymore, anyway they took a lot of skin away and had to make her a new belly button.
She has got pregnant again and has popped out already, only think it doesn't look like an outie but a very small penis! She has posted pictures on Facebook of her impressive navel, we had a good giggle about her having 2 penises (she's having a boy)

ICompletelyKnowAboutGuineaPigs · 26/10/2012 09:58

An outie belly button can be a side effect of diastasis recti (separation of rectus muscles). It is normal to experience some separation of muscles in pregnancy and for the vast majority of women the separation closes after birth. But you can start doing exercises to minimise/repair a separation during in pregnancy. I think this website is really good at explaining it.

Faylalu · 26/10/2012 11:19

Mine is very much out and I pretend it's a panic button! Happened in both pregnancies and it looks ridiculous when I wear snug tops!
