ANOTHER pelvic girdle pain thread... any reccs for a mattress topper?

I was the cheerful soul moaning yesterday about my agonising hips and very kind MNers pointed out that it could be PGP.

I begged a physio friend-of-a-friend to see me first thing this morning as we are going away for a week and I wanted to get some support and help from a physio.

She said it was indeed PGP, exacerbated by a long walk I did at the weekend. Very helpful, suggested all kinds of things the MNers have already suggested in terms of keeping hips square etc... much less walking :(

BUT she also suggested a mattress topper to cushion the bed. Has anyone bought one, and if so, what kind? John Lewis ones look wildly expensive but I can't put a price on a good night's sleep at the moment (well, actually, I kind of can; they are almost 200 quid which is really a lot to fork out). Amazon has cheaper ones for less but I don't know how good they are - they are the memory foam kind.

Anyone tried one and have any brand reccs?

Thanks so much.

I did the duvet thing too. also satiny PJs for easier movement!

I've still got horrific PGP 16+ years on(it is very rare don't panic)

I have used a down filled mattress topper before which was good and a memory foam one which was fabulous. I saw those in Dunelm at the weekend I think they were about £99.

Sorry you are still struggling. :(

Did you try the princess and the pea thing? :) I think if that doesn't work then the mattress topper won't. When reading up on this I found that the mattress topper didn't help for people so if the stacked duvets do not work then I don't think the topper will?

Tuttutitlookslikerain · 24/10/2012 10:54

Here are some memory foam ones

this one looks good of you don't want to spend a lot.

I, also, use a body pillow. I lie on my side and sort of put my leg on it. You would rest your bump on it too. It takes the weight off your pelvis.

Another tip is satin sheets and pyjamas, they make it so much easier to move around in bed!

Thanks everyone, sorry I was out all day and didn't get a chance to see the replies!
Thanks Ladymia - I didn't try the folded duvet thing last night, just tried out the snazzy new body pillow but am going to try the duvet trick tonight. Hopefully that will prevent me needing to fork out for topper!

Thanks for links tuttutitlookslikerain - also for reccs for satin PJs - might need to persuade DH to 'treat' me... :) Sorry to hear you still suffer 16 years on :(

I got my mattress topper from m&s and it was £55!! My hips hurt a lot less with it on. Worth a look. Xxx

emeraldgirl1 · 24/10/2012 17:13

We have an Ikea mattress pad on our bed anyway and we have added the futon mattress on top. So much better for me but DH hates it.

HastaLanugo · 24/10/2012 17:31

P.S glad you sorted the diagnosis. No more long walks!

emeraldgirl1 · 24/10/2012 17:36

Thanks so much Hasta - yes, a shame as long walks are something I really enjoy... though not more than I DON'T enjoy waking at 2am in agony!!

We recently bought a great topper from dunelm mill, it's quilted and velour on one side. It wasn't expensive, about £30, and is really comfy.
