Just been told it's TWINS!!!

Hi there,

this is my 1st post and 1st pregnancy. Had my first doctors app yesterday and she asked me to straight to a&e for an early scan as she was worried I could have an ectopic pg. however after a lengthy internal scan and a couple of consultants later, it appears there a two little babies growing in there!! Complete shock as I was originally going tithe hospital expecting to hear the worst!!

It is a risky pregnancy as the consultant suspects that they are monoamniotic / monochorionic meaning they share a placenta, share the amniotic bag etc so there is a risk of getting tangled up or one being more greedy than the other! I'm only about 5 weeks so still wary even if there was one baby but this is even more nerve wracking / exciting!

Any twins advice would be greatly received!!

Congratulations! :-) I have no idea about twins, but have the doctors asked you to rest more?

Congratulations!!!! I am 19wks with twins (first babies also). So far all has been fine. Had MS/nausea but not totally crippling - that's past now and the main thing is that things are starting to accelerate i. The growing stakes. Bump is certainly coming along.

The nice thing about teins is that even slightly jaded NHS professionals get excited when you tell them, which is nice. You get a lot more scans and reassurance than for a singleton which, partic for a first PG is nice. Mine are DCDA so not so high riskas you but fingers crossed that will all work out. I found the wait until the 12wk scan v difficult - there is obv a bigger chance that something will go wrong but all you can do is hang in there and look after yourself. I imagine the sickness/tiredness will kick in fairly soon! Just go with it. Altrrnatively, if you have energy, then use it. I have been swiming, walking, doing PG Pilates as and when I feel in the mood and it does help reeduce the tension/stress. Good luck!

Oh thank you girls!! And thanks for the twins support! Yesterday was quite a day and hardly slept last night for thinking too much! Yes the consultant said what he could see was very interesting - that was before he told us there were 2!!

But they've asked me to come back for another scan on 1st October, I should be about 7wks by then.

Actually felt a bit queasy this morning for the first time, but wasn't sure I'd that was maybe just down to being overtired. Ran to the shop and bought all sorts on the way to work in case I started to feel sick...oranges, grapes, salty hula hoops, the works! just in case I need a wee something to get me through!!

Awww... lovely news. Sorry it's not the easiest version of twins, but I'm sure they'll do their best to make it as safe as can be. I think with a scheduled CS at 34 weeks is usually advised with mono-mono sort. But am sure consultants will advise.

My cousin just had twins, not sure which type (they reckon only blood tests will tell). They came naturally 2 days before their scheduled CS. Whole family is atitter about it.

Congratulations! My DCDA twins are nearly 7 now, but I remember that first scan sooo well Smile

There are some good support groups around, as well as the boards on here - I think the best thing I did was to talk to other twin mums, as it was reassuring to know they'd got through the stage I was at and were able to empathise with what I was going through.
And the best thing is that you'll be a supermum as far as mums of singletons are concerned, however much you feel like you're not coping Smile

Take care of yourself and rest as much as you can, and keep us updated on your next scan!

Oooh congratulations! I'm sure they will keep an eye on you as best they can.
Just a thought - as they share the placenta and bag etc, does that mean they will be identical?? :) I've no experience of twins, just curious!

I'm so so grateful for all of your replies, thank you so much! This was the best website I've found!! As we are still in the early stages, we haven't told anyone accept my best friend. I told my dad (he has a medical background) last night but not going to tell my mum until the next scan as she would scream the country down and not be able to keep quiet haha!! So it's great to be able to get this all out of my system and get real advice!!

yes guaranteed identical!! crikey! honestly this is the maddest couple of days i have ever had! eek!!

Booked in for the next scan on 1st October so will be sure to report back!

too excited to work this morning!

I would take the monoamniotic / monochorionic diagnosis with a pinch of salt. When I had my ID twins my consultant (an id twin specialist) said there is not reliable way to see the dividing membrane until later on - sometimes as late as about 20 weeks. It is much more likely they share a placenta but have their own sacs.

By the way - there is a twins website www.twinsclub.co.uk - It used to have very good forums - can't vouch for it now though because it must be at least 5 years since I posted there ! Mine are now 9.5 - but I still clearly remember that first scan (mine was at 12 weeks), and the emotional roller coaster of the pregnancy. Mine were born at 35 weeks and had no problems apart from being small.

Congratulations Grin I have 4 month old frat twins, not as risky a pregnancy but still pretty hard going. All totally worth it, loving my double trouble and so far not really any harder than my singletons

Congratulations :)

I am 33+4 with DCDA girls. It has been a long and sometimes difficult pregnancy but it is lovely feeling them squirm and wiggle and trying to identify which baby is which. You will be well looked after and scanned every 2 weeks with MCMA twins.

Congratulations OP! My twin boys are 17 now and I can remember well my first scan.

The couple before us came back into the waiting and said to a relative "Well at least it's not twins!" Till that point the thought had never occurred to me, I remember thinking what a strange thing to say! Ten minutes later we were told it was twins!

Monochorionic/monoamniotic twins are v rare, but either way, great news! We have twins, ours our monochorionic diamniotic (one placenta, 2 sacs).

Twins are great and, in my opinion, best had in a first pregnancy!

Having twins as your first must be totally overwhelming! I am 16 weeks with my DCDA twins, who will be little sisters to their 2 big brothers. Looking forward to having 4 kids (eek) under 4. I am finding it hard getting my head around having two babies and I've got a couple under my belt already.

I think twin pregnancy is very different to singletons. The exhaustion is one thing! I had lots of bleeds in the first few weeks which is apparently v common with twins. It won't be plain sailing, but hopefully you have a good fetal medical specialist assigned to look after you.

wow thanks again for all your well wishes advice and experiences! reading all the messages certainly has helped me through today and i'm beginning to take it all in! Overwhelmed is the word!!

onemoreforgoodmeasure... i went to the doc originally just to register my pregnancy and mentioned i had been having some ongoing lower left abdomen pains. my doc was worried that it could be an ectopic pregnancy and advised to me to go to A&E immediately to get an early scan to ensure i was OK. To be honest i had read up that cramps are pretty common and so only dropped it in at the end of our conversation. i had been having a lingering pain, more than just a few cramps. So while waiting for 4 hours i had convinced myself that i would be given bad news. if i'm honest, the cramp problem never was checked out but could just be related to constipation!!

Congratulations! My MCDA twins have just turned one. I would say join TAMBA, there is lots of info there and there was a recent thread from someone who had just had MOMO twins. Read all the info you can and make sure you get the level of care you need. For me it was scans every two weeks from 12 weeks to check for TTTS, but with MOMO it may be even more often.

Id twins (those that come from one egg that splits) do not run in families. Those that do have a tendency to run in families are the fraternal twins - two eggs released at the same time.

So if OP has twins in the family will make no difference (although it may help in terms of experience :)).

hi mallon, thanks! no we have no twin history on either side - that was the first thing i said to the consultant. but he said that mono/mono twins aren't hereditory - just occur through complete chance!
