When do I need to think about ordering a pushchair?

Ok, might be getting carried away as am only 12+1...

But I keep reading that there are long waiting lists for some of the main pushchair brands that I'm looking (icandy, bugaboo). How long is long? Are we talking months and months?

Ideally I would like to wait until 20 week scan to order anything big like this because I am scared to jinx anything, but do I then risk running out of time?

Yes, months and months - in some cases 6-9 I hear. I ordered a nothing-special pram from M&P and still had to wait 2 months for it - there are lots you can order with immediate delivery if you're not particular though.

You could always order the pram of your dreams at 20w and if it doesn't come til after the baby does, use a cheap 2nd hand one? They seem to sell for peanuts on ebay.

Hey,

Thought i would post as ive had a nightmare/ or may have a nightmare. Currently 30 weeks pregnant and want the UppaBaby Vista only to be told theres an 8 week waiting list. So I've placed the order but cutting it fine. I was informed that the ICandy wasn't available until March (guaranteed) as they have had global distribution problems apparently. I think if you start looking and make your mind up then you can place a deposit down so you are guarenteed to get what you want.
Hope this helps as it seems starting shopping at 30 weeks was a mistake! lol x

Rockchick1984 · 20/09/2012 10:06

iCandy peach or strawberry - yes you may run out of time! Most others you would be fine ordering after 20 weeks.

John Lewis will let you order, then pay once it's in stock so that may be a good idea for you?

elliebug · 20/09/2012 10:09

I ordered mine really early and asked what would happen if we didn't need it and they said we would get a full refund of whatever we had already paid, have fun, I love pushchair shopping Smile

BonaDea · 20/09/2012 10:11

Thanks all. Actually the uppababy vista was another one we were considering.

Rockchick - john lewis might be the answer as we have a store close to us and might well have ordered from there anyway.

hmm, think DH is going to get the fright of his life when he hears we're going to order so soon!!

I was told there'd be a 7-8 week wait for the Uppababy Vista at John Lewis as they were out of stock, but then they got a delivery the following week and I got it the next day! So I think sometimes they over state the waiting time...unless I was just lucky! I've now had the buggy since about 28 weeks as a result.

BonaDea · 20/09/2012 10:13

Can I ask what made you choose the Uppababy Vista? I've read good reviews but hardly see any of them out and about, so wondered why there aren't more of them out there....

Depends on what you want.

There are supply issues with the iCandy Peach and Strawberry models so if it's one of those you want then you'd be best to order ASAP. I haven't heard of any problems with their other models (Apple & Cherry).

I ordered my Strawberry for baby due at end of June. iCandy were unable to supply in time but the retailer I ordered with very kindly offered me their display model (leaving them without one for several months).

Not aware of any issue with Bugaboo other than that the new version of the Cameleon has just launched but I would think that your due date is sufficiently far enough away for any supply issues to have resolved themselves by then.

Start having a look around now and get a feel for what you like and then work out when you might need to order. In general 8-12 weeks in advance is plenty of time for the majority of brands.

carrielou2007 · 20/09/2012 10:14

Bugaboo you can get easily (John Lewis recommendation here) but if you want the iCandy (I'm a Bugaboo girl but the peach is lovely too Smile) you will need to think about it now which seems ridiculous!!

I bought my cam for ds after my 20 week scan and will do thd same this time big that I need it as I still have a bee+, Mountain Buggy and Maclaren here still BlushGrinGrin

carrielou2007 · 20/09/2012 10:15

Bought can for dd and ds that should say Blush how can I forget how many children I have? Blame pregnancy brain Blush

HarlettOScara · 20/09/2012 10:18

There are a couple of very good pushchairs just released/just about to be relaeased....the Uppababy Cruz, Babyjogger Versa and Easywalker June. Although you're more likely to run into supply issues with newly released models but I'd defintely have a look at them if I was looking for a pushchair now.

Paddocks1 · 20/09/2012 10:19

I just fell in love with the UppaBaby, It's so practical (the massive basket) and light to push and has loads of extras. It was rated which best buy for 2 years i think so we went to test drive one and it was great...anyone would think i worked for them (I don't btw lol)
I know what you mean BonaDea you don't see many of them at all. They are really popular over in the states and i think they are slowly coming over here now. x

Smicha · 20/09/2012 10:20

Yeah, I've hardly seen any either and wonder if it's just because it is a relatively new brand in the UK (I may be wrong about that though!) We looked into it because it was a which best buy and got good reviews here on MN. Decided to go for it as easy to put up and down, the carrycot is a great size and can be used overnight, and the shopping basket is huge! DH liked the sturdy wheels too. And it isn't too heavy. We wanted a travel system as we are out in the car lots and have also got the maxi cosi cabriofix to go with it. I'm 38 weeks now so haven't actually tested it yet... But will do soon!

Loupee · 20/09/2012 10:25

I ordered the Uppababy Vista in March and got it delivered a week before I gave birth at the end of July. Part of the wait was down to the colour choice as well, so how flexible you are on the colour might make a difference to how long you have to wait.
I went for the Vista as it seemed a nicer height, good adjustable handle bar, good which reviews, big shopping basket. We also got a great deal buying from the baby show. Been using it for 8 weeks and can't fault it. But haven't used anything else to compare it against. It is a lovely looking buggy, and carry cot is really nice as well.

I don't think it is as well known brand over here yet, is big in America, and their are only 2 different models, so not as much choice as the likes of Icandy or Bugaboo. But then I also liked it because I didn't see them everywhere!

3rdbump · 20/09/2012 10:33

Am ordering mine at 30 weeks - am currently 26 weeks and bought my first thing last night on eBay - a snowsuit! also buying my moses basket bedding and towels today online, finding out what am having tomorrow evening - gender scan in 4D so will probably nip to ASDA afterward and get a few bits :)

BonaDea · 20/09/2012 10:45

Oooh - think I might start looking at the uppababys again, then. Nice to be different and as we live in Wimbledon, every other yummy mummy has a bugaboo and it might be nice to stand out from the crowd! (plus, what's not to like about a big basket!)

Sastra · 20/09/2012 11:10

I got my bugaboo at 33 weeks.

Don't get it too early as your year's warranty will begin as soon as you buy it remember!

Brugmansia · 20/09/2012 11:19

2 of my friends have the uppababy. They like them but I have discounted them as being too big and bulky for London public transport.

When I asked in general about timing in John Lewis they said there's no problem if it's in stock and with most brands they can order out of stock models in 8 weeks I think, maybe less, except iCandy. I'm going to look in early November for late January due date.

wheresmespecs · 20/09/2012 11:43

If you go to John Lewis, you will be able to have a play with different buggies and the staff will be able to show you how various features work.

Key things are - will it fit easily in the boot of your car (eg if you have to remove wheels, how easy is that), how easily can you turn it from facing you to facing away (you will want them facing you to start with but turn them round then they are older).

If you order something that isn't well known in the uk, just check how easy/quick it is to get spares/replacements.....

dozensofpichu · 20/09/2012 11:56

bonadea I just happened across this thread and just wanted to add another vote for the Uppababy vista! Definately the best pram I've ever used, and I'm into double figures as I like to try different ones out! It's so light to push, basket is fab, the carrycot is beautiful and it comes with pretty much all the accessories. 100% worth a look into, I can't fault it!

BonaDea · 20/09/2012 13:03

thanks all - uppababy does seem popular!

PipIsOutNow · 20/09/2012 14:06

I'm 21 weeks and have just ordered my iCandy peach but it's not expected in until I'm due which is cutting it fine but it's my dream pram!!! Lucky I rang now, it's only through sheer impatience that I enquired about it do early!!! The lady on the phone said iCandy have huge stock issues at the mo but have promised to fulfill all back orders so il definitely get my pram, just might not be til baby is nearly or already here!!! If u want an iCandy then defo look into it ASAP although if it was me I'd still want to wait until my anomaly scan before buying anything so big. Good luck with your choice :)

BigW · 20/09/2012 14:47

I ordered my iCandy Peach from JL a couple of weeks after my 20 week scan and it turned up about 6 weeks later. The Strawberry was a different matter - couldn't even try it out in the shop because it flew out the door so quickly. Love the Peach - even though I am not due until November so haven't actually used it yet, just looked at it a lot!

shop1909 · 20/09/2012 15:21

I second the vote for uppababy being a good choice - I liked how the baby seemed to be quite high in it, wanted a carrycot, the basket and how easy it seems to use compared to others in shop but I would definitely consider getting it sorted out as soon as you can if it's what you want - mine has been on order since the end of July, when I was 30 weeks, and is supposed to be delivered to the shop today after being delayed 3 times.... baby is due on Saturday (eeek) so pretty disappointed at the min. To be fair the shop does has black and silver ones in stock (I have a black one with my name on it in case baby decides to show before other one comes in!) so it is possible to get one "off the shelf" as it were.

Rockyhorror · 20/09/2012 15:24

We're more than likely ordering our pram tomorrow and I'm 15 weeks. The place we're getting it from only has an order of 12 coming in December so want to make sure I've got my name down, as for the guarantee, the shop we're getting it from the guarantee doesn't start till you take it away, and they will hold it for you for as long as you need after you've put a deposit down so it's a win win.
