Last week or two of pregnancy

Just a place for advice/suggestions or a place to chat for those of us in the last couple weeks of pregnancy. I am on a brilliant antenatal thread but my due date is the first there and I don't want to bore them all with nonsense about braxton hicks and how to fill my days when lots of them are still at work... and I think they would prefer their babies to stay inside for now! I'm not quite at the "get it out of me" stage yet... but I'm definitely at the "if you came now you'd be very welcome" stage.... :)

I am 38+5 today and this is first baby. I know most first babies come late, so I've been trying to tell myself I'll be late throughout the pregnancy, but now I'm term it's hard not to be excited. In the last three or four days I've had long periods of continuous mild period-like pain, and some painful tightenings (sometimes very close together, but then they stop). Are these imminent signs, do these mean nothing... I don't really know. I haven't had a show.

Baby has been engaged since 34 weeks (uncomfortable!) I'm pretty sure his/her back is on the left side at the front (all the kicks are upper right hand side) which I think is ideal. I'm a little obsessive about keeping baby in a good position - I spend time on all fours, make sure I get plenty of walking/standing, sit on a gym ball when I'm on the computer, sleep on my side, I don't lie back on the sofa. I'm probably overthinking this.

I am doing pretty ok for late pregnancy - still walking at least a few miles a day, or swimming, or walking into town every day. I actually did a charity night hike last night! (Boyfriend carried maternity notes in his backpack through the woods - it was a bit stupid really!) I am slow, but I thought I'd be a lot heavier and more immobile by this stage to be honest. I stopped work a while back - a very busy, stressful, physically and emotionally demanding job - so I've had a lot of time to relax, nest, exercise, see almost all my friends, sort my flat out. Everything is neat and sorted and stocked and ready.

I'm grateful that I've had a troublefree pregnancy and hoping the birth will go fine too. Feeling positive and relaxed about it, just impatient!

How are other people doing? Staying busy, getting anxious, waiting, over-analysing every tiny sign!? Any suggestions for good things to do in the last week or two? Please no one tell me to 'get lots of sleep' as this is the one thing I am completely incapable of at the moment - up every 30-60 mins through the night...

Since posting here this morning I have had intermittent pains. Nothing overly regular but definitely had four or five throughout the course of the day. Going to try to have a doze now in case I need my energy later.

nenehooo · 20/10/2012 17:20

Hi ladies, can I join too please? Was also on the Fed Up thread and need to continue to rant!!! Like a lot of you I'm unbelievably moody - poor DH can't do very much right at the moment, bless him. Still no signs apart from random pains, but they tend to be when baby is moving, so don't think it's anything exciting Sad
Good luck mummy and Citrusy - hope your labour vibes rub off on some more of us!

AnneH656 · 20/10/2012 17:28

Oo a show would be good. How can I be envious of people getting gunk in pants??

We did go for a beach walk and admit is has helped. Proper fresh air and chips :) Had some cramps in car in way back too but nothing now...

Any more labour style signs out there?

milli2512 · 20/10/2012 18:22

Ha I have show envy too. Never have I inspected my gusset so much! Well took the dogs out for walk and feeling lots of pressure down below but crampy feeling gone. Going to be lazy and have fish and chips for tea nom nom.

AnneH656 · 20/10/2012 19:27

Haha Millie! Glad its not just me... Never looked in my own pants so much. Silly as midwife even told me totally norm to not get anything showy or watery til labour.

Hope dinner was lovely. I have re lived my cone of chips all sodding afternoon. Bloody pregnancy....

Orenishii · 20/10/2012 19:28

Yup show envy here too....and am I the furthest along?

sobs

No, I think someone is the same...40+4 anyone?

milli2512 · 20/10/2012 19:37

Oren I'll be 40+7 tomorrow and I know Gangly is the same, afraid I can't remember or be arsed to check everyone else.

Feeling sooooo full after my fish and chips. Surely baby has to be completely out of room now. Come on out you'll have more space!

Orenishii · 20/10/2012 19:40

OK, alright, I'll stop the sobbing now :)

AnneH656 · 20/10/2012 19:42

40 + 1 here

Oh today the 'have you had it yet' texts and messages came out in force.........

emzypoo · 20/10/2012 19:45

AnneH656 · 20/10/2012 19:49

Emzypoo! Are you fellow former breach?? At least we have turned and on normal labour watch :)

AnneH656 · 20/10/2012 19:50

Orenishii · 20/10/2012 19:51

Ooooooooooh go emzy

Plug envy Envy Grin

mummy2benji · 20/10/2012 20:05

My show wasn't that dramatic! Just some (tmi alert, look away if you wish) blood-stained thick mucus when I went to the toilet, then have had small amount of pinkish mucus when I've wiped since. I didn't have a show at all with ds - waters went then into labour. The show has been a bit of an anticlimax... I got all excited and went nuts hoovering the entire house in readiness for bubs arriving, but nothing has happened since. Just the odd tightening but nothing regular or even uncomfortable right now. Ohh well, continue with the waiting game!

I've been feeling emotional and ratty today too :( Feeling generally down and fed up and a bit tearful. Grrrr hormones! hugs to all

emzypoo · 20/10/2012 20:11

Hi anne yes I had baby turned a few weeks ago and luckily stayed the right way and I've been praying for the plug for days now I wish it wud do one coz its turning me eek x

Orenishii · 20/10/2012 20:13

Awww mummy2benj like you say it's just the up and downess of pregnancy. At least you've had a show, right?

I literally cannot equate this bump with having a baby. I keep reading about those of us going into labour, having babies, seeing babies in the street and thinking - how did they do it??

Chin up for all of us - we'll get there one way or another :)

mummy2benji · 20/10/2012 20:22

Yes it's a very bizarre thought that bump will become baby soon!! When the midwife did my sweep she told me that she felt baby's head and did a good sweep that nearly touched her ears - the thought that she has a head and ears sitting there ready to come out felt very surreal! (Obviously babies have heads and ears... just hard imagining the bump as having them. Along with hair and tiny fingernails and little toes!)

My neighbour 2 doors up had her baby last night - she was 5 days further along than I am and we both had sweeps together yesterday (not together, that would be bizarre). Hers worked straight away and her labour lasted 2 hours - I am more than a little envious! Envy

And yes orenishii we'll all get there soon! :)

nenehooo · 20/10/2012 20:27

Plug envy Grin - also can't believe I'm sitting around actively willing my body to cause me more pain than I will ever have felt in my life! Ridiculous!!! I'm 40 + 3 and been feeling strangely upbeat and awake today - I saw an advert on TV for something starting on 1st November, and I thought "I'll have a baby by then" (hopefully). That's a light at the end of the tunnel right?!

AnneH656 · 20/10/2012 20:34

Emzy that is Brill that he has stayed put too :-)

Mummy2benji I crossed my legs tight at the thought if them touching ears!!!!!!
not a great sign when you think I am hoping to squeeze one out of my ladygarden head ears and all as soon as poss.....

mummy2benji · 20/10/2012 20:44

Hehe it sounds much worse than the reality! She said my cervix was soft and 2cm dilated so it was easy enough for her to do - felt a bit like an aggressive smear. That sounds horrible I know but she told me to take some deep breaths in and out and it was okay. She's coming to my house to do another if bubs hasn't got a wiggle on by monday.

I think it's hard to imagine giving birth as we can't quite comprehend how a baby could fit out of there... Thankfully though everything down there is all soft and ripened (foul word - comparing lady bits to fruit?) so it is nothing like we're imagining. I think about how unpleasant smears can sometimes be, but I didn't know anthing about ds passing through my cervix when I had him - I noticed him come out, of course, but couldn't feel what was happening higher up!

Gah hard not to think about anything else! I am so focused on baby making her appearance that I don't really know what to do with myself. Dh just suggested I look at new curtains for the dining room online - I shouldn't pass up this carte blanche he has essentially given me to spend money... ;)

Orenishii · 20/10/2012 21:01

nene I was watching Strictly and they were promoting next week's Halloween theme and I was thinking, please let me have given birth by then!!

I said as much on the Strictly thread but it was studiously ignored by the die hard Strictyliers Grin

AnneH656 · 20/10/2012 22:39

Oh def get on the spending :-). My dp keeps suggesting we go out 'just once more'. This week I have had two visits to patisserie Valerie, a Wagamama and yo sushi (without raw bits...obv...). Best thing about being over due!

Know feeling re 'next week might have a baby here' re strictly. Seem to remember thinking that last sodding week though :-(

We need to focus hard on what we can enjoy now baby waiting. Not a lot on offer but watching American dad and Family guy in bed before sleeps is lovely. Oo and not breathing in...

nenehooo · 20/10/2012 23:36

orenishii I had a random thought about being in labour next saturday night during xfactor and what a shame that would be - not sure I should be admitting to that though!!! Blush
anne think you're absolutely right - definitely the best idea to focus on things we can do while we still can - I've been reading like a demon (game of thrones book 4 - just obsessed!) and have started watching downton abbey series 1 because I've never seen it. Also enjoying just pottering around tidying up after dh keeping the house tidy. It's quite novel having a tidy clean house during the week!

milli2512 · 20/10/2012 23:54

Holy shit.......my waters have gone along with my plug! Got into bed and about an hour later a Sharp pain followed by huge gush. Theres so much of it. It keeps coming. no real contractions yet just got the shakes. I'm scared! Phoned labour ward - if things don't get going I have to go in the morning to confirm they've gone and then look to induce on Monday if still not properly kicked off. Watch this space......

GanglyGiraffe · 21/10/2012 00:51

Sounds good Milli! Have you had any contractions yet? I hope all goes well, good luck Smile
