Hi,
I'm looking for other pregnant Type 1 diabetics in London, just to have someone to keep in contact with and share advice/horror stories/support each other etc.
I don't actually know anyone at all with Type 1, despite having had it myself since 1989

Thanks all Smile

It could be the caffeiene. I do have one 'proper' coffee a day now (didn't have any at all for first 12 weeks), so maybe I need to cut that out, but I do so love it as my only solace in the morning when I can't have brekkie!

I will also be ditching the kit for a while after birth. My poor fingers...

Mylittlepuds · 28/11/2012 12:22

Bona if left 'unattended' my BSs would rise from waking until noon. I have no bloody idea why it happens - could be a delayed dawn phenomenon thing - but that's why I try have brekkie ASAP. I can wake at 5.5 and by half an hour after it's 7.8! Alternatively if I'm not having breakfast and I can see it rising I'll give myself 1u.

My fingers hurt too :-(

Just found this which is diabetes etiquette advice for parents of diabetic teens, but to be honest pretty much everything in it struck a cord with me about what I want to tell DH, the doctors and nurses, my family, everyone:

dieciocho · 28/11/2012 14:03

Point 6 on that Teenage Etiquette thing reminds me of my mum when she drove me to university for the first time; she refused to leave me and all my stuff there until she had heard me tell the girl in the room next door that I had diabetes!
Mooooooother!!!!

Ha ha ha - just fantastic!

Am much happier today - 4.5 after lunch and no hypo. Wriggler wriggling and all is well!

Mylittlepuds · 28/11/2012 17:39

Yay! Good.

Mylittlepuds · 28/11/2012 21:50

So...after the drama of being poorly putting up my levels for a few days I'm now having the opposite problem!

Despite being 19 weeks pregnant my insulin requirements are still v low. I'm 1u to 10g and even then I'm still heading for a hypo after say 2 hours.

Today has been very weird though. Normally I eat, sugars spike to say 9/10/11 before (hopefully) coming back into range 90 min later or so. Today my levels have not spiked at all really - just remained very flat, going up to say 7.8 at their peak.

Now I know this sounds ideal but for me it's very odd indeed not to have those spikes as I get comfort from the fact my levels are following their normal pattern. When they don't I just think I'm going to bottom out, and generally do.

So...could it be too much background insulin? I popped it up a few when ill and then this morning I woke at around 3.4. Or could it be my mammoth healthy eating drive and exercise finally doing something and making me more sensitive to insulin?

Confused...

BonaDea · 29/11/2012 12:08

Hi puds - have you had hypos? Other than the 3.4 this morning?

Also, what did you eat when you ended up as 7.8 at the peak? Did you have lots of carbs, or was it pretty low carb?

I know it is unsettling when the pattern shifts, but to me this sounds like a near perfect pattern and I wouldn't be looking to change anything unless I was having lots of hypos...

Mylittlepuds · 29/11/2012 13:05

No not proper hypos - a few heading that ways and 3.5-3.9s. Just can't get my head around the low carb thing although it's clearly working! Keep having wine gums to boost me back up and then go too high! I just need to work in my confidence I think!

puds - I think you've hit the nail on the head. You just have to get yourself comfortable with the new readings and assure yourself that providing the levels are staying steady (ie not peaking and then massively dipping) you are not going to have a bad hypo, you'll just stay at near-perfect levels.

Well done you. Here, have a congratulatory bunch of flowers Thanks

Mylittlepuds · 29/11/2012 16:06

Thanks Bona - that's lovely!! Did you say your doc was a bit concerned about low carbing during pregnancy? I'd say I'm on about 90g a day...

BonaDea · 29/11/2012 16:46

Not just during pregnancy. I always get sh!t from the nutritionist when I tell them that a moderate my carb intake. Some rubbish about not having enough glycogen in my liver to provide a dump if I need one. Complete twaddle from what I can see from the research.

To be honest, I'm eating way more carbs during pregnancy than I ever did before, but mainly because I'm so damn hungry all the time but I genuinely think that provided you are getting plenty of fresh fruit and veg, calcium and protein, there is very little that lots of stodge actually adds!

Mylittlepuds · 29/11/2012 17:21

We can't bloody win!

BonaDea · 29/11/2012 17:58

You are so right. When I got my first ever A1c in the 5's (I think it was 5.4 from memory) I was soooo pleased that I could have jumped up and down (I might have in fact). By the time the DSN had finished with my, I could have cried. She told me that I "must" be having too many hypos - even when I looked her in the eye and told her that I wasn't and that my control was good because I was watching my carbs. Seriously, those people need to work on their communication skills and stop treating ALL of us like the lowest common denominator!

dieciocho · 29/11/2012 20:19

I don't want to limit my carbs! What would I do without potatoes, oat cakes, cornflakes...?

OP posts:
RueDeWakening · 29/11/2012 20:26

...chocolate, crisps, pasta, pizza...? :o

(my diet may currently not be the healthiest it's ever been!)

Mylittlepuds · 29/11/2012 20:50

It's weird but I've totally gone off crap since bring strict. Almost...

Mylittlepuds · 30/11/2012 21:40

I've had such a good day with my diabetes today. It's a rare and welcome relief. Ahhhhhhh!

Mylittlepuds · 01/12/2012 18:27

Hi ladies. I hope you're all well. Spotty how are you and Felix doing?

So..lunch and dinner never tooooo terrible but breakfast for me is always the biggest challenge.

Basically if I have a bowl of porridge I'll take say 4u go up to something daft in the teens before (always) crashing down. If it was any other meal I'd take more insulin as the ridiculous spike is really too big, but as I crash so horrendously off the piddly amount of insulin I can't. Why why why!!!! Does anyone else have this and is there a solution? Are humans just not 'meant' to have carbs on a morning? Does anyone have protein with breakfast and does that help even lessen the spike?

Mylittlepuds · 01/12/2012 18:54

Oh and the situation is made lots worse if I do anything by the way of moving about! I.e walk to the shops or housework

dieciocho · 02/12/2012 16:45

Some people do say that protein for breakfast is better as it keeps you fuller for longer, don't they? I'm not sure how relevant that is for us though!

Mylittlepuds · 03/12/2012 09:48

Everyone has run away :-(

Mylittlepuds · 03/12/2012 14:18

Tried green tea yesterday after breakfast - a mug of it - and my levels were much better. Worked again today! Could be coincidence but there is research to say green tea helps insulin along. Give it a try!

dieciocho · 03/12/2012 15:12

Puds, I've read that drinking green tea isn't advisable during pregnancy...
