Hi,
I'm looking for other pregnant Type 1 diabetics in London, just to have someone to keep in contact with and share advice/horror stories/support each other etc.
I don't actually know anyone at all with Type 1, despite having had it myself since 1989

We have lots of people who can watch her but she's mine I want her! Wink

BonaDea · 22/11/2012 16:58

spotty - we're all thinking of you! Hope the appointment with the consultant goes well in the morning. Eeeeek - I wonder if you're going to be meeting your little one sooner than you thought!!

Mylittlepuds · 22/11/2012 17:52

Ah Spotty! Thinking of you! How many weeks are you?

SpottyTeacakes · 22/11/2012 17:54

35 today! The mw said they may or may not give steroids but steroids can effect sugar levels and if I have them they might want to put me on a sliding scale does anyone know anything about steroids I don't really want a sliding scale?

BonaDea · 22/11/2012 17:58

I don't know anything about steroids, and why you would need them. But even if you do need them, I would SERIOUSLY push back if they are suggesting a sliding scale.

Ok, steroids might affect your levels, but so does being pregnant, eating, drinking, doing exercise (or not!), being ill etc etc. Not sure why being on steriods would magically mean you have to hand over your control. I think a lot of medics not trained in 'modern' methods of diabetes management have little concept of the fact that we adjust all day every day, so not sure why one other factor would mean that you need a sliding scale. It just doesn't follow!

I would just say you are happy to take the steroids if they are necessary, but that you will be ensuring you test and adjust your insulin as required, and won't consider a sliding scale unless you are literally unconscious.

SpottyTeacakes · 22/11/2012 18:00

Thanks Bona Grin

dieciocho · 22/11/2012 18:46

I second Bona's advice; it's your body, your condition.

Good luck with it all; if it is time, I'm sure everything will be fine. Try to sleep well.

I had steroids at about 35 weeks as they knew I was going to be induced a 37 weeks and the said it was a case of "buckle and braces" in case he needed to come even earlier. The steroids are important as they develop the baby's lungs which may not be ready at this point.

However - I was NOT put on a sliding scale. I was so cautious of handing over control that the said it made sense for me to do it myself. Be warned though - they really do put your levels up. It was a struggle to keep things under 10, but that's the aim. Anything target below that is unfeasible. Plus at this point there'll be no harm done to th baby whatsoever.

Good luck! I'm thinking of you and expect you to be MNetting from the ward!

Mylittlepuds · 22/11/2012 19:03

Sorry for typos!

SpottyTeacakes · 22/11/2012 19:11

They're too busy to do anything probably until the morning but if I go I might miss a slot Hmm dp still not here

Mylittlepuds · 22/11/2012 20:20

Spotty have they checked if you're dilated yet? I was 1cm at 35 weeks!

RueDeWakening · 22/11/2012 20:29

I had steroids twice with DS, at 24 wks and then the night before he arrived at 31 wks. I had to run my basal at 200% of normal and even that wasn't always enough, so do keep a close eye on things!

SpottyTeacakes · 22/11/2012 20:29

No they can bugger off I haven't had a bath today!

Steroids on labour ward at nine ish

RueDeWakening · 23/11/2012 07:10

How's it going Spotty? Hope alls well!

SpottyTeacakes · 23/11/2012 07:15

Morning Smile had no sleep been on monitor loads. First lot of steroids two hours ago and they haven't mentioned the sliding scale, said I know more about my diabetes than them! I'm sure the drs will have different ideas to the lovely midwives.... Anyway got to have three more doses all twelve hours apart so looks like I'm stuck here Sad and I'm on labour ward I could really do without being reminded of all the pain I'm soon to be in Wink

Mylittlepuds · 23/11/2012 08:29

Morning Spotty! Stock up on loads of magazines and relax. Hope you have an okay day.

SpottyTeacakes · 23/11/2012 09:45

Apparently 'it's easier to control your blood sugars if you keep mobile' pfft I'm going to sleep. Registrar who I don't like wanted sliding scale but on call consultant said no (registrar told me my sugar levels obviously aren't well controlled because I split my levemir Hmm)

RueDeWakening · 23/11/2012 14:29

That registrar wants a clip round the ear :o hope you had/are having a decent sleep (I need one of those too...)

dieciocho · 23/11/2012 14:30

Oh Spotty, I've been thinking of you.

No! Not more idiot drs who think they know better than us.

It should be law that if you are to become a diabetes doctor you have to be diabetic.

SpottyTeacakes · 23/11/2012 15:34

My diabetes consultant is diabetic!!! I love him but he has really tiny hands....

They said if I go over 8 or under 3.5 I have to have a sliding scale but ill fight it Grin induction Sunday night shit!

dieciocho · 23/11/2012 16:35

Wow, Spotty, lucky you; at least you're both on the same page as it were.

Sunday night? As in 2 days time? A November baby then.
I hope it all goes well, we'll all be thinking of you.

x

Yes there goes my December baby! I had it all planned because dp could take two weeks paternity then would have the whole of Christmas week off! Argh 3.9 followed by 3.9....

SpottyTeacakes · 23/11/2012 23:43

I reduced my night time levemir by another unit because I ran at 3 all last night bit obv since then I've had two lots of steroids and now it's gone 7.0, 8.2, 9.4 I've just given two units of novo rapid. I'm so, so tired I don't know if I can put up the fight against the sliding scale I've had an hours sleep since Wednesday night Sad

SpottyTeacakes · 24/11/2012 05:45

I gave in. Anyone know how long after my last steroid injection it will stop effecting my sugar levels? I want it off before labour
