What will your baby be sleeping in for the first few months?

Just starting to think about the sleeping arrangements for the first few months. Obviously baby will be in our bedroom with us, in which we have no room for a full size cot so looking at Moses baskets and cribs.

Im expecting a large baby (not been told this, just going by family history!) and from what friends have said they grow out of Moses baskets within a matter of weeks. So at the moment am thinking of getting either the rocking or gliding crib from Mothercare.

Also really liked the look of the 'snug' Moses basket at Mothercare but the lady running my NCT course put me off by talking about how they need lots of airflow and this is rather enclosed. Although personally I'd love a giant one of these for myself to snuggle up in

Interested to hear what other people are planning on for sleeping arrangements at first. Especially from experienced mums who've done this all before (although I realise every baby is different)

Hiya congrats on the imminent lil one.

Dd is 6 month n out grew her Moses basket at 2 month. Due to reasons specific to us she was in her own room at 5/6 weeks. But rather than a crib does your pram have a carrycot?? When dd grew out her Moses basket she slept in that. Saved us getting a crib.

Also you never know could b a little baby yet! I was a 9lber. Dh 11lbBlush I was cacking it but dd was a nice lil 7 Smile

Ooh melliebobs you had a lucky escape there!

Yes I have a carrycot but I think I read somewhere in it that it's not suitable for overnight use (which is probably a load of bollocks to be fair and they're just covering their backs).

I am going to co-sleep my twins. Didn't bother with moses baskets. Have one cot upstairs in our bedroom for them to share at night and one cot downstairs in the living room for them to share in the day time.

SilverSixpence · 31/08/2012 09:36

I am going to borrow SIL's moses basket, last time I used a carrycot that came with the travel system but it was a bit narrow and DS grew out of it quickly. We do have space in our bedroom for a cot so baby will go in that afterwards but after that we'll be a bit stuck as no spare rooms for them to go into!

Badgerina · 31/08/2012 09:55

We will be co-sleeping with DS2, the same as we did with DS1. We have a Moses basket for some naps during the day, but I anticipate using our Moby wrap sling a lot for naps in the early weeks.

ZuleikaD · 31/08/2012 10:16

We'll be using the Amby Nature's Nest that we used for the other two. Doesn't take up much space and it's brilliant for getting them to sleep.

TruthSweet · 31/08/2012 11:21

I've got an Ikea cot with one side off next to my side of the bed though I fully anticipate baby sleeping right next to me for the majority of the next 6m or so.

Baby will be in our room until 12-18m as did DD2 & DD3 (I'm not trotting down the landing again as I did with DD1 after 6m!). Much easier to scoop baby out of cot and feed lying down then either safely bedshare or move baby back to cot when asleep.

It has meant moving the furniture around a little - I have two bedside tables now and DH has none so we could shuffle the bed out of the centre of the room to give us room for the cot on one side of the bed. Not a big deal though.

terilou87 · 31/08/2012 11:24

yeah babies do grow out of moses baskets quiet fast, have you concidered using a crib instead of a cot there slightly smaller than a cot and last that little bit longer than a moses basket.

KatAndKit · 31/08/2012 11:28

We used a crib for the first four months which was perfect. Unlike a moses, he could see out, so when the crib was right next to my bed, he could see me and even stretch his hand out to hold on to my finger.

Now we have tried to put him in a cot in his room, but the cot is too big for him and he is not used to it, so he is in a moses basket inside the cot. At 4 1/2 months he still fits in it, it's a bit snug but he is perfectly comfortable and happy in it, although not sure I would feel happy about a baby his size using it on the rocking stand still. I reckon he can carry on in it till he gets to 5 months and then it will be just the cot.

If we hadn't have wanted to move him into his own room, the crib would have been perfectly fine until 6 months.

We are using our bugaboo carrycot downstairs, desperatly want a ambys nature nest but cannot justify that amount for our last baby.

milk · 31/08/2012 18:39

Moses basket :)

CakeBump · 31/08/2012 18:50

We have been given a Moses basket, which we will use until DC grows out of it.

We're a bit brassic so are simply looking to spread our baby costs out a bit - this way we can save buying a cot for another couple of months, hopefully.

Our pram also comes with a carrycot so thanks for the tip mellie, if that's bigger than the moses basket we can maybe rope that in too... :)

ThreeWheelsGood · 31/08/2012 19:35

We'll be using a moses basket and our pram says it's suitable for overnight sleeping so we'll use that too. Bit confused about buying bedding but will look into that when I start maternity leave!

PrimaBallerina · 31/08/2012 19:41

We're getting a space saver cot from Kiddicare as a standard won't fit in our room. I'm hoping it will last longer than a crib. DS hated the Moses basket so I'll dust that off just for downstairs.

iggi777 · 31/08/2012 19:52

I had a crib for ds1 and ds2 (4 months) is currently sleeping in a Bednest - love it!

Sossiges · 31/08/2012 19:54

A drawer

KatAndKit · 01/09/2012 08:41

For those looking to save pennies, the spacesaver cot was reduced in Kiddicare when I was in there this week and will last till 18 months.

You would have no need for a crib or moses if one of these fits in your room and the baby can sleep in the pram downstairs, so would be a massive saving and at 18 months you could probably move straight into a junior bed.

iggi777 · 01/09/2012 09:25

That does look cheap - I wonder how easy it is to get a mattress for it though? (Off to google)

KatAndKit · 01/09/2012 09:51

Kiddicare sell the mattress for £31 - I thought it would be a bit cheaper than that so perhaps the same size might be cheaper elsewhere.

iggi777 · 01/09/2012 11:39

Thanks!

StateofConfusion · 01/09/2012 12:09

Look on ebay for weird shaped matresses, I just had one made for our carrycot for the pram for £16 including delivery.

BuntyCollocks · 01/09/2012 12:31

In our room in a miyo baby hammock. Frame will be downstairs, and she'll be hanging in the doorway to our room

imustbepatient · 01/09/2012 12:44

For DD1 we used a Moses basket borrowed from family then into a crib until 6 months when she moved into the cot in her room. For soon to arrive DD2 we are going to get an Amby nature's nest as per one of the posts above. Anything to help us get a bit more (I.e. any!!) sleep in those first few weeks/months. DD1 was very colicky and wouldn't sleep at night unless lying on one of us, so hoping the Amby will help if DD2 is the same. Plus they last so much longer than a Moses basket.

WantAnOrange · 01/09/2012 12:48

In a moses basket. DS was in his until about 6 months but then he has always been dinky.

surfingluby · 01/09/2012 13:02

Congatulations on the near arrival of ur bundle of joy :-)
We have three children aged 11 and two 8 yr olds and they all slept in our bed till they were about 3 then went straight into their own rooms in toddler beds. On the odd occasion one of us would have a drink I put a blanket in a plastic washing basket and they slept in there :-) .........number 4 is on its way but this time we've bought a Moses basket only because this time we have a memory foam mattress and I'm not sure how co sleeping will work with it! I know what I'm like though and I'm not liking the look of the Moses basket as it doesn't look very breathable so we do have problems with the mattress then we will buy a crib :-)
