What will your baby be sleeping in for the first few months?

Just starting to think about the sleeping arrangements for the first few months. Obviously baby will be in our bedroom with us, in which we have no room for a full size cot so looking at Moses baskets and cribs.

Im expecting a large baby (not been told this, just going by family history!) and from what friends have said they grow out of Moses baskets within a matter of weeks. So at the moment am thinking of getting either the rocking or gliding crib from Mothercare.

Also really liked the look of the 'snug' Moses basket at Mothercare but the lady running my NCT course put me off by talking about how they need lots of airflow and this is rather enclosed. Although personally I'd love a giant one of these for myself to snuggle up in

Interested to hear what other people are planning on for sleeping arrangements at first. Especially from experienced mums who've done this all before (although I realise every baby is different)

We had dd in a crib in our room until she was 5.5 months then she went into the cot in her room. I didn't bother with a moses basket.

We have the swinging one from mothercare, but got it second hand on ebay and bought a new mattress for it.

DS sleeps in my bed. I did try him in the Moses basket but it was a no from him.

BurnThisDiscoDown · 01/09/2012 15:33

DS slept in a Moses basket by the side of our bed til he was 5 months old and starting to roll, as I was scared he'd fall out! He was only little though, 6lb 11 when he was born. My friend had a bigger baby (almost 10lb) and was only in it til about 6 weeks old.

DS was 11lb 7, and would have fitted in it for ages - he just refused to!

I don't think anyone has mentioned this (only skimmed thread) but have you thought about moving furniture out of your room for the first few months.

Many people think they haven't got enough room for a cot, but if you have enough room for a wardrobe, moving that out into the baby's room temporarily will free up room for a cot in your room

Saves buying Moses basket or crib. Just an alternative. DD was in a Moses basket, then travel cot and I still wasn't ready to move her in to her room so we brought the cot in to ours! Grin

We're going straight to a crib for DC3.
DS1 was in a moses basket for a good few months but DS2 was a chubster and only fitted in it for about 6 weeks or so!

Mine all slept in a cardboard box! It was made especially for the job with a little quilted liner, but was essentially just a large box. So much sturdier than a moses basket and they were all ok in it for the first 3-4 months until they were old enough to go in the cot.

TheSurgeonsMate · 01/09/2012 16:01

I used a crib, but I hadn't really understood the guidance about the baby sleeping in the room that you are in. They mean during the day as well. This is where a moses basket could come in handy.

blackteaplease · 01/09/2012 16:07

I didn't realise that either TheSurgeonsMate but actually dd used to either sleep on me, on a blanket on the floor or in the pram so was downstairs with me until she was old enough.

I'm not sure a moses basket would help that much, if you have a big baby it will still only be in use for 6 weeks max and the safesleep guidelines are up to 6 months.

TheSurgeonsMate · 01/09/2012 16:14

Hm, yes, probably it was only after about 6 weeks that I was sucessfully "putting her down for a nap...."

Glad to hear about your blanket. My baby used to sleep on a folded towel on the sitting room floor. I later formed the impression that this wasn't quite the done thing. What it is, I think, is that some babies might not want to go to sleep on an ocean of floor. Mine never minded.

blondiep14 · 01/09/2012 16:20

We put the travel cot downstairs for naps - takes up pretty much the whole room but it's not forever (we tell ourselves)

Loving the quilted cardboard box Grin

I have just bought a Moses basket with bedding and stand - good quality one in good condition - 2nd hand on eBay. I plan to use it both downstairs in the day and upstairs at night. Will be buying a new mattress for it too, all in it will cost £30. Will probably sell it afterwards and make some money back if we only use it for a few weeks so no great loss.

We are being lent a cot which will go in our room when baby outgrows the basket but I still thought the basket was good for daytime naps and easy transportation around the house. Time will tell!

Lexiindisguise · 02/09/2012 18:08

We are going with a Moses basket until the LO grows out of it, then a cotbed - I have to add though that this is because I have been offered both for free so it means I just need to buy the mattresses and bedding! Friends have had their babies in Moses baskets from 2 months to 4 months, depending on the size of the baby, but this is my first one.
