When did you have your first consultant appointment?

With my first pregnancy I had seen a consultant by 12 weeks (viewed as high risk). But this time I'm nearly 15 weeks and haven't heard a peep from the hospital except for my 12 week scan. Should I be pestering the MW (or someone else) about seeing a consultant soon? Or is it actually normal to see them later than I did with DD1 (When my antenatal appointments were all a bit backwards when compared with other people). Thanks.

I never saw a consultant at all with either baby
I have community care from the midwives at our surgery

DowntonOut · 22/08/2012 21:42

You see a consultant if your pregnancy is considered high risk. I should have been clearer that I was asking women who did need to see a consultant/have a consultant led birth.

I first saw my consultant at 12 weeks.

4boyzmum · 22/08/2012 21:45

im consultant led with this pregnancy. Im almost at the end now (phew!)....have only seen my consultant once - at 17 weeks. I was given an appt then to see him for the second time - on my due date! Luckily my community midwife is brilliant and tbh ive never felt concerned that ive not seen my consultant more. Just annoying that they've insisted on me being consultant led, yet i've not been!!

HarrietJonesPrimeMinister · 22/08/2012 21:46

I saw them this time at 9 weeks but last time at 14ish.cant remember the others. I'm consultant only care though

Jules125 · 22/08/2012 21:46

Really this depends why your pregnancy is high risk and what happened last time. I hope this means they are not too worried about you :-), but you can also chase an appointment through the MW or hospital if that would help you feel better?

MrGeresHamster · 22/08/2012 21:46

Saw the consultant at 20 weeks at the same time as the scan.

MrsPaynie · 22/08/2012 21:49

With my first pg I saw consultant at 16 wks and again at 34 wks, was under consultant due to previous multiple miscarriages. With DC2 and this time I'm midwife led care so not seen one at all.

LittleBearPad · 22/08/2012 21:54

16 weeks and 34 weeks

DowntonOut · 22/08/2012 21:56

Thanks all.

Jules, it's for the same reasons (chronic condition) and I'm under the same health trust, which is why I'm questioning it I suppose. I definitely had to see the consultant more than twice last time, and I escaped another meeting by having baby early! Going by the answers so far, I'll wait and ask the MW at my 16 week appointment, rather than chase it immediately.

Couldn't find anything about standard procedure anywhere Sad

My midwife suggested it would be at 16 weeks but appointment came through for c. 24 weeks. I work there though so got a quick one in at 15. Spent 10 mins on the pregnancy and 20 mins on work stuff!

DesperateHousewife21 · 23/08/2012 07:28

I'm under cons care this time and first saw her at 20 weeks, then again at 27 and I'll see her twice more in 3 weeks then 4 weeks.

I'm having extra growth scans but all is fine so far, I don't think she considers me particularly high risk as she said all being fine at the next two scans I can have the baby at the mlu.

blueberryboybait · 23/08/2012 07:31

I have a hyperthyroid and saw my consultants (endo and OBGYN) every 3 weeks from 9 weeks - 27 weeks then saw the every 2 weeks until 36 weeks then weekly until DD2 was born. Your PCT policy may have changed or the MW may have forgotten. If you don't want to wait until 16w then just ring her and ask.

Clarella · 23/08/2012 08:08

Mine was 13 weeks for Hypothyroidism but it went a bit crazy and obs consultant did say I could have seen him sooner. After everything i'd now be very bolshy and ring the anc unit regarding your particular condition to simply just query it given previous pregnancy. A mw would simply pass the query on to a doc or cons. No harm in double checking.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 23/08/2012 09:29

Mine was also for hypothyroidism, and I saw the consultant at 15 weeks initially and I'm due to go back at 35 weeks (interim care from the GP)

Personally I'd chase it up, it's only a phonecall, and it'd be awful if your referral had been misplaced.

steben · 23/08/2012 09:47

Consultant led with this one and did not see him until 22 weeks, will see him again at 36.

BumgrapesofWrath · 23/08/2012 09:50

I'm under consultant led care for high BMI, so am seeing them at 16 weeks and 34 weeks.

DowntonOut · 23/08/2012 10:33

Just phoned and I'm glad I did. No referral in the system Sad. to be chased now.

Oh dear downton - Unfortunately mistakes do happen and systems fail. Hope it gets sorted for you. I'm definitely now in the 'i don't care if they think I'm fussing its worth double and triple checking' camp!

DowntonOut · 29/08/2012 16:50

No mistake, they just don't bother seeing you until later in pregnancy. Sad

Downton - I was under consultant care for my second pregnancy, and they don't see you until 20 weeks.

Don't worry - I think when you are on your second and subsequent babies they rely on you ringing midwife or GP if you feel unwell or that something is not as it should be.

I then ended up on a fortnightly visit to the hospital for a scan followed by consultant appointment and it was a right PITA - so relax for a few weeks! :)

DowntonOut · 29/08/2012 17:19

Thank Alibaba. Unfortunately I am now in a situation where I want to see the consultant but MW won't let me. The battle continues...

Tittywhistles · 29/08/2012 17:22

I'm shared care due to previous pregnancy problems and I'll see my consultant (or more likely one of his minions) at 20 weeks after my anomaly scan. I'm quite pleased to be left alone for a bit after last time!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 29/08/2012 18:39

Eh - bypass the midwife then. Make a GP appointment and ask for a referral.

DowntonOut · 29/08/2012 18:44

We're of similar minds Alibaba, GP appointment booked before I even left the health centre Wink
