Hello - am 36w pg with DC#1 and today have started washing the vests, sleepsuits etc that we have been given or have bought for our baby. I've washed newborn, up to 1 month and up to 3 months so far - should I keep going? When do you stop washing baby clothes before babies wear them? Thanks!

Oh! Didnt know you had to wash them first - sorry can't help you but thanks for the info! :)

GnocchiNineDoors · 22/08/2012 11:20

I never did.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 22/08/2012 11:21

I don't bother. Blush

Beans1977 · 22/08/2012 11:23

That reassures me - I think it all seems a bit over the top but friends have told me I ought to and so I am being a lemming and doing so! I think I'll stop at 3 months then! Thanks

Anything that had been starched into a packet, I washed (vests sleepsuits etc), the outfits (which dd seldom wore anyway) I didn't.

ZuleikaD · 22/08/2012 11:41

I never did.

HaggisNeepsTatties · 22/08/2012 12:00

I wasn't planning to - I'm certain that I'm having a big baby and so don't want to wash a load of stuff that I could take back if he/she never wears it!

hillyhilly · 22/08/2012 12:01

Never did it, dd arrived 3 weeks early and they were all still in the packet

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 22/08/2012 12:04

I wash everything before we wear them,
did it before we had kids and will continue to
the amount of chemicals and dirt that is on clothes that have been through any kind of retail process makes me crawl.

BionicEmu · 22/08/2012 12:08

I always wash all new clothes before wearing, whether they're for a baby, my toddler or me Blush.

I hate the smell of new clothes, and a few years ago watched a documentary on what factories spray on new clothes (anti-fungals, insecticides, formaldehyde etc), and now I can't bear the thought of wearing clothes straight out of the packaging.

HoratiaWinwood · 22/08/2012 12:10

DC2 Grin

I get a lot second-hand passed down. I don't wash that if it smells washed (ie hasn't been languishing in a cupboard or loft).

I wash things as they come down from the loft as they get crumpled and stiff up there in the vacuum bags.

New things, well that depends how desperate I am. I lovingly washed everything... Then he vomited bloody mucus nearly non-stop for 18 hours and DH had to do a mercy run to Mothercare. No time to launder those before wearing.

Wildwaterfalls · 22/08/2012 12:12

I have washed everything up to 3 months. Also had a mad moment a couple of weeks ago when I decided to wash the cuddly toys / soft books we have already received for the baby, but acknowledge that might be slightly over the top... Smile

Q: 'When do you stop washing baby clothes before wear?'

A: When you have DC3. Didn't wash any of her stuff :o

Badvoc · 22/08/2012 12:15

I wash everything new....after working in next and m&s many years ago and seeing nowhere they kee the clothes prior to putting them on display!
rat poo, mouse poo, dust, flies....yuk.

sherbetpips · 22/08/2012 12:16

STOP NOW - keep the tags on as you will probably need to take most of them back and exchange for bigger different stuff. You will be washing stuff every day when you have the baby so no need for this pre-washing lark!

ballroomblitz · 22/08/2012 12:30

Same here Badvoc . Worked in clothing retail far too long (for reputable, well-known names) to not wash clothes before they're worn. Rats, fleas etc in stockrooms.

5madthings · 22/08/2012 12:32

i think you have washed enough stuff now, wait and see how big baby is when born and also what the weather is like etc, youc an wash the rest as and when baby starts to grow into them.

i also washed all baby clothes and still wash new clothes before wearing them myself or the childrne, they are treated with all sorts of startch and chemicals, not good for the skin, esp if you have sensitive skin.
my mil thinks i am mad and that clothes look best the first time worn when they havent been washed. but i would rather get the chemicals and startch out thanks very much!

and after waht badvoc says i am glad i do!

Hevaniceday · 22/08/2012 12:34

I wash everything before use for me and DH, also the same for DSD and have been since we got together. I have VERY sensitive skin as does my DSD, DH to a lesser degree so will be washing a decent chunk of clothing before Little One arrives :)

newtonupontheheath · 22/08/2012 12:40

I was everything new before we wear it-me, DH, DS and new bits for new baby. Blush

Wouldn't occur to me not to...

Agree with the pp who said stop now!

I do prewash, but wouldn't recommend doing too many batches ahead of time as you just don't know what size your baby will be - and you may want some options to return or regift (you won't think so now, but might change your mind when you have about 300 0-3 month babygros and nothing in 3-6!).

DS was small and started off in 00000 so all his newborn stuff got a good wear, dd was a whopper and scooted up to to 3 month stuff in weeks, plus there are seasons to consider, you don't know what the weather will be like when they're in it. I'd recommend washing the newborn stuff if you don't have too much of it, but then take a rest and see where you're at.

BridgeOfWhys · 08/05/2014 08:07

It's doesn't take long to wash some baby clothes. Don't wash everything you have. I just washed a few vests and baby gros until I knew his size. I didn't really buy any clothes either though until he was here.

I wash all of our cloths first. Stock rooms are disgusting, as are shop floors and other customers. There was no way I was putting clothes that have been touched by all and sundrie with their unwashed toilet hands on my baby. Or me for that matter!

Ragwort · 08/05/2014 08:14

I never did either - it's amazing the things you learn that you 'ought to do' on Mumsnet Grin.

I love the smell of brand new clothes - probably because 99% of our wardrobe always comes from charity shops so getting anything new is a huge bonus Grin.

SandorClegane · 08/05/2014 08:19

I don't wash others before wearing them, it's an unnecessary waste of time. There has never been any problem caused by this.

I'm also probably ok with buying a toilet plunger and a tin bucket to do laundry with.

That link opens a porn site on my phone btw, I have reported it.

SandorClegane · 08/05/2014 08:20

I don't wash others, whatever that means, or clothes.
