What are you wearing to come home from hospital?

Starting to think about what I should stick in my hospital bag to wear home from hospital. I want to be comfortable (I guess that's a given in late pregnancy!) and look nice too. I'm not expecting to be back in regular clothes but thinking I might be ok with loose-ish tops I grew out of at around the 6 month mark? Also have a pair of maternity jeans that are now a little bit tight so was thinking they could work.
Anyway, tell me what you have worn/plan to wear etc....

I had 2x emcs so anything like jeans was an absolute no no as they would have just rubbed on my wound. I didn't give a fig what I looked like but did need to be comfortable. I wore loose cotton yoga type trousers, BIG knickers and a loose jersey top. I had a hoodie too but had the postbirth sweats so didn't need it at all.

ShoeJunkie · 21/08/2012 09:24

I wore some maternity trousers and a loose top. Don't forget 'big' knickers too!

SerenaJoy · 21/08/2012 09:33

I wore black jogging bottoms, a loose-ish black nursing top and the obligatory Big Knickers. Very un-glamorous and probably very unflattering but I just wanted to be comfy.

I'd say wear dark colours, black preferably, on the bottom - you'll probably be wearing a ginormopad but if you're wearing black you don't need to worry about any potential, um, leakage...

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 21/08/2012 09:35

Big knickers, yoga pants and a loose top - something that hangs over your bum to hide the enormous pad in your knickers.

openerofjars · 21/08/2012 09:36

Sweat pants all the way, in a dark colour (leaks, I'm afraid). Whatever you do, take stuff that fits you when you're 9 months pg as if you can't get back into your earlier maternity trousers you will feel sad and daft. Maternity tops are good because you don't snap back straight away but still have a bit of a deflated bump for a couple of days (well, I did) and then you find out that only so much of the bump was baby and its luggage and the rest unfortunately is cake and won't go away for a bit. Grr.

To be honest, I can't remember what I wore for leaving hospital with DS. Anything that still fit, I think: I was humongous. And DD was born at home so it wasn't an issue (but I packed black trackies in my emergency transfer bag).

It also depends on whether you are having a c-section and/or plan on breastfeeding.

Basically, I would take things that are as comfy as pyjamas but that look okay for wearing outside and concentrate on making sure your hair looks good as that won't have any practical implications for your comfort and can make you feel better if you're a bit sore and tired. I had a makeup bag and travel hairdryer in my hospital bag, with shitloads of concealer a priority.

Big scarves are good, too, for lifting a tshirt and sweatpants out of pyjama territory.

Take comfort in the fact that nobody else on the ward will be in cocktail dresses yet!

Oh, and one of the best tips I ever got was to stay in pyjamas or sweatpants as long as possible because as soon as people visiting the baby see you in normal clothes they will stop helping and will start expecting you to function as normal e.g. bringing them cups of tea and making lunch. Wear your pjs and you are delicate and only just out of bed and need cups of tea making for you.

Bartusmaeus · 21/08/2012 09:40

I think I wore the same clothes I went in in! Because I got changed into a gown as soon as I arrived and spent the 4 day hospital stay in pyjamas/nightdresses. I think I wore comfy black joggers and a maternity strappy top (not a nursing top because I lived in just my nursing bra when I got home as it was so hot).

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 21/08/2012 09:43

If it's anything like last time I will be dressed for going clubbing, apart from my feet, which will be protected by slippers Hmm DH's outfit choice after an unexpectedly early arrival!

My outfit of choice would be slip-on shoes, socks, stretchy yoga-type trousers, a long top and a fleece. If it's raining I might even treat myself to a coat.

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 21/08/2012 09:43

Oh, and big knickers, of course. Commando is not the way to go on this occasion.

whenyouseeitwaveorcheer · 21/08/2012 09:46

I would just wear maternity clothes, tbh. A dress would be good, in this weather, and will mean there's no rubbing if you end up with a c-section.

Jeans are not particularly comfortable if you end up with stitches from a tear or episiotomy (esp episiotomy, ouch!) so I'd go for some kind of joggers.

Sorry, I'm not making this sound like much fun am I? Hopefully you'll have a straightforward birth, but just in case I'd go for something like maternity leggings (over the bump) and a maternity top.

Katienana · 21/08/2012 09:55

Some great tips here ladies! I think I will go for maternity leggings (mine sit just under my ribcage so should be ok if I have a scar - I also already have a pack of massive knickers in my bag) long top, cardi and scarf. Then when I get back in the house straight on with the pjs!

Don't forget shoes!

milkyjo · 21/08/2012 10:02

I wore exactly the same going into hospital as coming out of hospital (except the pants and socks!). On the way in I didn't care what I was wearing I was in pain! On the way out the next day I didn't care what I was wearing I was amazed with my beautiful baby. I wore mat joggers and top and a hoody as it was snowing, with ugg boots - never have I looked sooooo chavvy!

milk · 21/08/2012 10:08

Trackie bottoms and baggy top + coat as it will be October :)

Tinkerisdead · 21/08/2012 10:10

I came home in my nightie! In the snow. I'd had a section and my scar was really sore, the ward was roasting so stepping outside in my nightie into the freezing air was heavenly. The midwives did laugh at me but i said i'll only put my nightie back on again at home so whats the point in changing for a car journey.

Then i got re-admitted 40 minutes later to a different hospital and i was still in my nightie! Cue more laughter at me but i was so comfy Grin

Yummymummyyobe1 · 21/08/2012 10:13

I wore a Boden jersey wrap dress in a salmon pink, with caramel boots and a matching bag, a scarf. Saying that our DS was born at 04:26 and we were home by 18:30 the same day.

ZuleikaD · 21/08/2012 10:40

I wore pyjamas.

getthecakeready · 21/08/2012 10:43

LOL! cunning

SneezySnatcher · 21/08/2012 11:05

Last time I got PJs from asda. They were black (important for leakage) and looked just like yoga trousers and a t shirt. I was comfy but didn't really look like I was in pyjamas. If I still have them I'll probably wear them again!

FoxyRoxy · 21/08/2012 11:11

I've packed a pair of those aladdin type cropped trousers from Primark, black and baggy on the bum ;)

LauraSmurf · 21/08/2012 11:19

Don't count on just wearing what you did in pregnancy.

My DH had to bring peer pregnancy clothes in! Nothing I wore in preg fit. It was all too big! I would say something with a drawstring or wrap style to adjust for any size!

Good luck!

CinnabarRed · 21/08/2012 11:24

You really, really won't care, as long as you're comfortable!

Jogging bottoms, a t-shirt, a cardie. Job done.

Wildwaterfalls · 21/08/2012 11:39

SlightlySuperior GrinGrin at your DH picking a clubbing outfit!!

Katienana · 21/08/2012 11:40

There is a lovely photo of my mum posing with my sister outside the house wearing a red pinafore with a black polo neck under, and massive 70s sunglasses (well it was the 70s) holding what looks like a pillow but you can just faintly see my sister's pink face poking out...I wanted to recreate that in some way as she looks so happy and glam but having read this I think I will settle for being clean and being well enough to be home!

I think that in the 70s, mums typically had a pretty restful 10 days in hospital post-birth whilst their babies were bottle-fed and sleep-trained in a nursery somewhere else in the hospital.

I wore yoga pants and a baggy t-shirt from Sweaty Betty with a nursing vest underneath and a pair of flip-flops. Comfort and dark colours are definitely key.

Yummymummy are you Kirsty Allsop Wink?

backwardpossom · 21/08/2012 12:33

I couldn't have cared less what I wore home from the hospital, I was too high on the drugs they gave me for painkillers. I think I flew out the front door of the hospital...
