What are you wearing to come home from hospital?

Starting to think about what I should stick in my hospital bag to wear home from hospital. I want to be comfortable (I guess that's a given in late pregnancy!) and look nice too. I'm not expecting to be back in regular clothes but thinking I might be ok with loose-ish tops I grew out of at around the 6 month mark? Also have a pair of maternity jeans that are now a little bit tight so was thinking they could work.
Anyway, tell me what you have worn/plan to wear etc....

After my first DD, I left hospital in a loose comfortable navy checked maternity dress, probably what I wore to go in (can't remember), but I did have trouble with my shoes as my feet were very swollen!

After my second DD, and a planned CS, I wore stretchy black maternity trousers, and a long loose jumper. (I also wore DH's giant XL pants after the CS, as mine used to rub on my scar, and because it was numb I didn't realise. DH's pants used to come up to my bra and were very very soft and comfortable Blush)

Leggings, leggings all the way cos you know they'll fit and also be super comfy. Then you can pack a nice tunic top or long jumper if you want to look nice on the way out. I wore leggings and a long pink jumper dress to leave the hospital with DS. I wasn't really thinking about looking nice, I just packed it cos it had gotten slightly tight towards the last few weeks of pregnancy (so I knew I wouldn't want to wear it between packing bag and labour but was confident it would fit even if my bump didn't go down much). It was just a bonus that it was one of my nicer looking outfits Smile

I have been thinking about this a lot, I think I have visions of myself looking like I did pre-pregnancy and swanning out of the hospital in my best skinny jeans and a nice top...

Think I may have to go with the dark baggy pants and t-shirt combo from the sounds of it...

I may have been a tad unrealistic :)

So glad of this thread! I was going to take my marl grey maternity joggers as they are so comfy but now realise they would be a nightmare for 'leakage' so better find something black to pack!

Black maternity trousers I have been wearing for work (stretchy and comfy)may be the ticket - with a long top to hide the enormo-pad.

The other thing to remember is that, in reality, the only time you're going to be 'visible' to the wider public is the very short walk from the maternity ward to the car. You will perhaps see a dozen people. None of whom will care what you're wearing!

Honestly and truly, what to wear on the journey home is not something to lose sleep over.

My one piece of advice is for both you and your OH to practice getting your car seat into and out of the car. Do it often enough that you can do it in your sleep, both of you. Because if you have a long or difficult labour, and you're desperate to get home to your own space, and your brand new DC is crying in the lovely new car seat, then not being able to get the car seat into the car will reduce you to tears.

I've packed a maternity dress - will fit at any size, nothing to rub anywhere and comfy. When I have my period normally I tend to stick to skirts and dresses as it's comfier, so figured I'd be even more keen to do so when 'down there' is even more ouchy!!!

Big pants are essential... And I mean big. I'm traditionally a thong girl so big pants go against the grain... BUT it was an absolute must!! Wink

Granny pants, maternity leggings, nice top/dress and some nice shoes is what I would wear to look nice and feel comfy.. I however went home in my pyjamas lol! X

Those disposable knickers you get from Boots are great - get a big size. It's much easier in the early bleeding-a-lot days to just peel off pad and pants together and chuck the whole shebang.

With ds I wore what i arrived in, cropped yoga pants, vest top, flip flops and obligatory huge knickers. It was November, the baby thermostat was still turned on to max at that point. With dd I went in in mat jeans and had to send dh home for trackies as the jeans kept falling down, they were massive.

I've packed leggings and a long top, some slip on wedges. I've got loads of black granny pants and a couple of mat bras. I want to look a bit better than I did last time in baggy grey trackies and an old work shirt of Dads. All I remember about the journey home though was getting cross with DH for not avoiding the bumps in the road whilst I was sore.

I wore a Maternity dress as the bump does not disappear straight away, it was smaller but still present... Good luck with childbirth

MainlyMaynie · 22/08/2012 08:37

I cannot believe anyone who claims they wore a salmon pink dress within 18 hours of birth Hmm.

I had a homebirth and only wore a dressing gown for several days. I actually dyed an old one dark brown so leaks wouldn't show Grin
