What was your weight when born and do you think this is/was an indication of the weight of your baby?

As above really - been thinking about this recently as I'm scared that I'll give birth to a 10lb+ baby (and it'll hurt!) as I want to have a natural birth as possible - with the help of hypnobirthing!
Also do you think your weight when you were born has ANY relation to your size as an adult (mainly height) - just wondering with this question.

A few examples
A work colleague weighed around 8lb (she's 5'3" now) and her DS was 9lb 9oz

My sister was 6lb 2oz (5'6" now) and has a DD - 6lb 12oz and a DS - 6lb 15oz

My great aunt weighed 12lb (Shock) and she's always been small - about 5' now (not sure how heavy her DS was - dread to think if my theory is true!)

I've spoken to other people and it seems that their DCs have not weighed that much more than they did when they were born.

I'm wondering if this gives any indication that I may have a baby that's not too big/small as I was 5lb 12oz (and I'm 5'8" now)

I hope this all makes sense - I'm not very good with putting my thoughts down on paper!!

I can't believe it has any relation. I was 6.4lbs at birth, am 5ft 2 now and 8.5st pre-preg. DS was 7.8lbs.

MyNewCatIsFab · 09/08/2012 03:19

My mum is 5'1" and had 3 of us who were over 9lbs. My first DS was 10lb 10oz ( 12 days late) and everybody in the hospital was winding me up about how big the next one would be if I had another.

When I asked the consultant she said your body generally knows what it's doing and only makes babies it can cope with. DS2 was 8lb 9oz and DS3 9lb 13 oz. Both my sister's DC were just short of 10lb.

Me - 8lb 2oz. Baby girl- 9lb 11oz. Not sure how big my husband was though.

honeytoast · 09/08/2012 04:27

My mum had a trouble-free birth with me at 38 weeks, not even any stitches.

I went into pre-term labour at 33+0, developed severe pre-eclampsia at 33+5, and DS came naturally at 34+0. And had a 2-inch long nasty internal tear.

Nobody in my mum's family has ever reached full term though. (So I'm sure I'm going to end up overdue with DC2!)

Indith · 09/08/2012 07:23

Well I think I was around the 8lb mark so my ds2 would fit in with your theory but could you explain ds1 (rather smaller) and dd (rather bigger)? My smallest one was the most overdue too so nothing to do with being born earlier than the rest.

Makinglists · 09/08/2012 07:28

Well I was nearly 9lb and DH was 10lb - so not sure what happened with out DSs - DS1 was born at 42 weeks and weighed 5lb 9 and DS2 was born at 38 weeks and weighed 6lb 2 - so though we were both pretty big (we're now very average build 5'7 and 5'9) we produce tiddlers!

EmilieFloge · 09/08/2012 08:08

I think it's all random.

I weighed 9lb1, apparently, and my children so far have been 6lb 9 and 8lb 12.

It depends on so many things. I hope your baby is not enormous though Smile

Northernexile · 09/08/2012 11:17

My mum is 5' 3'' and about six stone wet through. She was ten days over with me, I was 8lb, but it was a straightforward birth. I am 5' 8'' and about 9st 7lb now.

I assumed as I am bigger than my mum and was a sizeable enough baby myself considering her size, that I would have a whopper. Not so- DD was 6lb 10oz, born by EMCS at 41 weeks.

I just assume it's random!

Discolite · 09/08/2012 21:04

I was 6lb 4. So was my Mum. So was her Mum!

Knowing my luck I'll buck the trend with a 10lb baby!

NoWayNoHow · 09/08/2012 21:12

I was 8lb12oz, DH was 8lb12oz, and I had a bet with him that DS would be the same weight.

I won!

rogersmellyonthetelly · 09/08/2012 21:25

Me, 7lb13 at birth. Ds 7lb 14, dd 6lb 12.
My mum was a 9lb baby as was my older sister, and my younger sister. I was only 7lb 13 but I now tower over all 3 of them by 6 inches. Apparently I was long and skinny like a noodle, both sisters were chubby little dumplings.

TransatlanticCityGirl · 09/08/2012 21:31

I was 7lbs 5oz when I was born (2 weeks late), and my DD was 9lbs 10oz at 2.5 weeks late. Incidentally, I was measuring perfectly average and hadn't gained that much weight. My midwife was predicting a 7lb 5oz baby (without knowing what my own birth weight had been). I think DD's size came from the fact that my husband is 6'3" (I am 5'4")

My sister was 8lb - something (probably in the mid range) and is 5'10" now. Her three babies were in the 8-9lb range (NOT as big as my DD!!). 2 of her babies were 2 weeks late, the last was 3 weeks early.

I don't think there's too much correlation in my family.

Can I just say however, that while it's nice idea to have a natural birth, please don't stress yourself out about this. I was also planning on doing hypnobirthing, and yes, due to my DD's size I ended up in a c-section. I cried when the decision was made. There is so much pressure these days to have a natural birth, and so much fear mongering about what will happen if you have interventions.

As it happens, I had a fantastic c-section and while I might like to try for a VBAC next time, I would actually be ok with another section and might even prefer it. (I also had an epidural before we got to the section and it was also fab fab fab - no pain and I will absolutely have one next time)

NellyBluth · 09/08/2012 21:44

I was a ridiculously wee 4lbs 9oz when born 6 days early. I'm 5'1 now, so never have been big.

However DD was 8lb 1oz at term +8. No one knew where she was hiding herself, they all told me I was having a smaller baby...

wanttomakeadifference · 09/08/2012 21:48

I was 10lb 6oz at birth, my poor mum is only 5foot 3!! My DC were in the 8lb range do no correlation there (thank god).

happy2bhomely · 09/08/2012 22:09

I was 8lb 3oz at birth. I am 5ft 9 tall. DH 5 lb 13oz at birth. He is 5ft 7.

Ds 8 lb 13 oz normal hospital delivery (epidural)
Dd 9 lb 7oz normal hospital delivery (G&A)
Dd 8 lb normal hospital delivery (G&A)
Ds 11 lb normal home birth (Tens & relaxation techniques)

I have no idea whether any of this means anything!

Please try not to worry about having a big baby. I delivered all of mine without a single stitch and no lasting damage. The 11lb one pushed me to my limits, but it was fine, honestly!

Good luck.

ItsMyLastOne · 09/08/2012 22:56

I was 6lb 10oz at 40+3 but am a twin and my twin sister was 6lb 4oz.
I'm 5'3" and my sister is 5'4" I think.

My DD was 6lb 14oz at 40+0.

My sister's DD was 6lb 12oz at 39+6.

Our DD's were very similar at birth but are completely different in height and weight now.
