Just the above question really. I want to make an informed decision!

Both mine had it. I didn't see enough reason why not.

SoupDragon · 08/08/2012 18:26

I chose oral for all my three - couldn't bear the thought of someone sticking a needle into them when they were so new and could see no real reason to go with an injection over oral.

StateofConfusion · 08/08/2012 18:27

Yes its extremely important.

Northernlurker · 08/08/2012 18:35

My older two were offered the oral version and dd3 had the injection. I think there is no reaqson not to give it. It protects newborns against a horrible and life threatening problem. It's a no brainer imo.

yep, DD had and haven't seen anything to change my mind in the mean time so DS will have it too.

Both of mine had the injection and they didn't even notice it as they had it while feeding. This next one will be having it also.

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 08/08/2012 18:46

Yes, AFAIK there aren't any contraindications but they give you a choice so that people who choose against ALL western medicinces can decline

the consequences of not having it can be bad, but unlike most other medicines I've never heard of any side effects of having the vit K, unless you object to all injections as a rule. So it was a no brainer for me, no risks but lots of benefits!

HappyCamel · 08/08/2012 18:49

Yes, dd had it straight after birth while feeding and didn't notice. I imagine after having your skull squashed while being born having an injection doesn't seem too bad. Oral vit K wasn't on offer at the hospital.

naturalbaby · 08/08/2012 18:51

Mine all had the oral dose.

iliketeamGB · 08/08/2012 18:53

Dd had oral drops because I hated the thought of her having an injection right after birth (which in hindsight was mad, because she had her blood glucose checked twice - and don't think the lancet used to.get blood out was any better than an injection).

ThreeWheelsGood · 08/08/2012 19:00

Yes, we will. Pleased to read above that it can be done while baby is feeding, not traumatic!

Emmiedarling · 08/08/2012 19:30

Thank you for all the responses! I shall go ahead then!

Mother Nature gets it wrong in around 1 in 10,000 babies. No idea why but the consequences are both severe and preventable.

RossettiConfetti · 08/08/2012 20:36

Yes, absolutely. No reason to risk my baby's life by not doing so, in my book: it's a benefit of living in a developed country with good, scientifically-developed medicine and a low infant mortality rate.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 08/08/2012 20:45

Yes. DD had it. Not while feeding though. She didnt seem at all distressed. TBH after all the squeezing, meeting a room full of strange sounds, bright lights and new quite blurry faces, an injection which took a second to do didnt seem a big deal to me.

This bump will have it also. :)

Chunkychicken · 08/08/2012 21:03

I'm planning to let #2 have the injection, just like DD. I didn't know it was 'controversial' until I joined MN & read the occassional thread like this one.

IMO, and it is purely my opinion, Mother Nature frequently gets it wrong and the argument that babies often have low levels ergo it must be evolutionary doesn't hold water - lots of things in modern medicine go "against" evolution/nature. I have not come across any studies or bodies of evidence that suggested vit K has a negative impact on a newborn. Hence, I feel better safe than sorry on this one.

If this baby is anything like my DD, it won't feel any injections greatly and will barely notice... FWIW, the heel prick test looks far more painful to me!!!

PebblePots · 08/08/2012 21:06

My dd didn't have it. I trusted she would be born with everything she needed.
