Hyperemesis Support

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable.

I would like to thank MOH MOP Ovaltine Caramellokoalalover (I think she's changed her nickname) Fluffy, Horsey Kali and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Very quiet on here, hope everyone's ok?

kalidasa · 09/11/2012 13:19

Just given up and gone back to bed because I feel so sick today. So have retreated to bed with laptop, drink and a pile of books and accepted that I won't get any useful work done today. Will have to get up again later as have a colleague visiting at 4 and then my MIL popping in at about 6.

In other news, I finally bit the bullet and did the huge Amazon order for nappies, breast pads etc a couple of days ago and have had four separate deliveries this morning alone! So I reckon we'll be able to pack the hospital bag at the weekend and hopefully DP will be a bit less stressed. It's quite nice filling the drawer with all the things though it does make it seem rather real!

37 weeks today so officially full term but obviously could be several weeks yet. Hope everyone else is surviving.

BarmeeMarmee · 09/11/2012 13:31

Kali sorry to hear you're feeling so bad again today. Hopefully the rest will do you good.

TMI alert... My plug has gone and have been having "contractions" roughly every 8-10 mins since I woke up however I'm still not 100% sure it's not braxton hicks so trying not to get too excited. My MIL has taken DS for the afternoon so am resting on the sofa and going to try and do nothing more strenuous than knitting!

MotherofPearl · 09/11/2012 15:26

Barmee, so hope things are on the move - good luck! :)

kalidasa · 09/11/2012 16:09

Ooh barmee that's so exciting! (Have to admit to being selfishly excited about your labour because once you've had the baby I AM NEXT!!) How painful are they? Cheering you on from North London.

LucindaE · 09/11/2012 20:04

BarmeeOOh, thinking of you, cheering you on for an easy labour. You've been really brave.
Kali Sorry you feel so bad. Hugs.

Good Luck Barmee!! Grin

washngo · 10/11/2012 07:54

Good luck barmee! Hope it all goes well x

BarmeeMarmee · 10/11/2012 08:35

Thanks everyone, I have officially made it to the pink castle Grin! Certainly not the birth I would wish on anyone I must admit-contractions never closer than 7-8 mins but always over a minute and gradually grew in intensity. DH arrived home about 3.30 and about 5.20 we were going to head to the hospital for pain relief. Went to go to the toilet before we left and she literally fell out into the toilet! Time of birth being taken as 5.30, she weighed 8lbs14.5

Now both in hospital-they think I lost up to 2litres of blood so may have to have a transfusion and she had a hernia and they're monitoring her for signs of infection after her unceremonious start to life buy we're both ok. I can eat again!!

Kali you won't be long and I promise it is worth it!

kalidasa · 10/11/2012 09:15

Goodness barmee how dramatic! Hope you are feeling OK. My father (retired doctor) always talks about a woman who had this experience when he was a junior doctor (baby delivered unexpectedly into the loo) but it can't be common!
Your DH must be pretty shaken too. Did he call an ambulance?

BarmeeMarmee · 10/11/2012 09:47

He did-once he'd retrieved her from the loo! I wouldn't have believed it if it hadn't happened to me. Think he's probably more shocked than I am.

LucindaE · 10/11/2012 11:04

Barmee Thanks Thanks Wine Brew Wonderful, welcome to the Pink Castle, congratulations on bundle of joy, what a thing to happen, but perhaps she's got an earthy sense of humour!
You must have been very brave about the pain, for that to happen!
Sorry about the blood loss, that's horrible, but I am so happy for you that you have come to the end of that dreadful Hyperemesis Experience!
Waves to all. Kali at the top of the list, now. We ought to do another one.

Congratulations Barmee!! Glad your both ok. Have a friend whose daughter was born in a camper van on the driveway but the toilet story definitely beats that one!! x

Littleplasticpeople · 11/11/2012 06:51

Congratulations Barmee Thanks Thanks Wine

Hello ladies just delurking to say massive congrats tobarmee and her toilet baby! What a story! You are amazing and I'm so glad you're finally over the horrors of hyperemesis. Enjoy your little one x

BarmeeMarmee · 11/11/2012 14:31

Thank you everyone. Unfortunately not able to quite relax and enjoy the pink castle yet-probably due to her unconventional arrival into the world Amy has an infection so is on iv antibiotics and a few other issues, and I have had to have a blood transfusion due to my iron levels being very low due to blood loss-possibly up to 2litres -so looking likely to be in hospital for a few days yet. Still, the sickness has gone and spd is a lot better so definitely heading in the right direction!

How are you all?

LucindaE · 11/11/2012 18:04

Barmee Oh no, hugs, that is understandable but worrying for any new mother. Sorry about huge blood loss, too - you must feel very weak. Glad at least the puking has gone, and spd diminished.
Apple I'm glad you 'delurked'. How are things?
MOP Lovely to hear from you as ever.
Kali nannyl Yank Wdobbs "Wasngo* Bonnie Kate and Everyone, I hope coping OK?

barmee I hope you and baby can get home soon. So glad to hear you feel better though

lucinda still on the cyclizine but feeling pretty ok. Even got an appetite and gained 1/2 stone (bacon butties :) ). Don't want to rub it in though when others are suffering so much

MotherofPearl · 12/11/2012 09:17

Barmee, so many congratulations on the birth of your baby girl! What a lovely name you've chosen for Amy. You must have got a dreadful shock when she popped out into the loo. Hope the infection clears up really soon so you two can go home. At least now that the HG is gone you'll be able to eat lovely nourishing food to build up your strength again after the ravages of the pregnancy (and birth). All the very best with it all. :)
Kali, you're next up and I will be checking in from time to time for birth news. Hurrah!

kalidasa · 12/11/2012 11:11

Stuck in bed again this morning, sickness very bad. Threw up yesterday evening with so little warning that I only narrowly missed a pile of washing up! But thinking positively, from this point on I am going to interpret every vomit as a possible sign of impending labour . . .

barmee and others who were sick all the way through, did you throw up a lot in labour itself? did the vomiting intensify at that point?

37 weeks and 3 days today, and feeling quite cheerful despite everything as it really will be over sometime in the next few weeks.

MotherofPearl · 12/11/2012 11:30

Kali, I didn't vomit at all during actual labour, even though I was sick all through the pregnancy. I was sick once - violently, all over DP - shortly after the birth, when I was in the recovery room, but I think that was a reaction to the pain relief meds (remifentanil, and then an epidural for the last few mins). But I guess everyone is different and many do vomit during labour, especially during transition.

MOH100 · 12/11/2012 20:01

Just on for a quick look, I've gone back to work so not getting any time to myself in the week any more.

Barmee congrats and hope the wee one is ok. My across the road neighbour popped to the loo before going in to hospital and ended up giving birth on the bathroom floor with her husband as midwife. The moral of the tale is wait and go to the loo in the delivery unit. Good news that it's all over for you though, are you managing to eat ok?

washngo have you tried ondansetron? Can they not just prescribe you that instead of what you're on?

Bonnie what nonsense, of course you can combine medications. Phenergan did nothing for me but it does work for some, you just have to give it a try. Avomine is an alternative to phenergan, it's another formulation of promethazine, but I was told by one of the Pregancy Sickness Support trustees that it works much better than phenergan. It's available over the counter if you're desperate (but don't let on it's for a pregnant person). if you've been looking up medications links you'll know what else to ask for if these don't work, they usually make you try things like avomine, stemetil (or buccastem) metoclopramide before escalating to ondansetron. As for combining, I was prescribed phenergan, stemetil and ondansetron in the same prescription by a consultant with the instructions to take them in whatever combination and dosage regime (up to max dose) worked for me.
