Oh my god the searing pain, I don't know what has happened.

On Friday I had a mild pain in my pubic area which was only there when I was walking or moving in a certain way. Saturday, Sunday and Monday it was not there so just forgot about it. Then last night at about 6pm it started to come back so I just rested and thought it would go away like it did before. Woke up this morning and it was still there, but nothing too major, just a bit of discomfort.

Put some body lotion on my legs after my shower (wondering if this is the culprit as had alternate legs on the toilet seat), and now I cannot walk. I mean each step I take, there is a searing pain. I can crawl, but not walk. It's agony.

What do I do? Do you think this will ease off if I rest?

I thought this sort of ting only appeared at about 25 weeks or so.

Feeling really down as now feel like I am completely sofa bound and have a 4yo ds to look after Sad.

Help!

Aww hun, get yourself to the doctors and ask for a physio referral, even if they can't do much they can give you a support belt that might help in the early stages before you get a bump.
I had it in my second pregnancy from as early as 9 weeks and it was hideous, so I feel your pain.

LittleSugaPlum · 07/08/2012 11:16

Im on my first pregnancy, im now 30 weeks. I had PGP start at 8 weeks pregnant. It was awful! I got referred to a physio at 20 weeks pregnant, and saw her once a week for 8 weeks, i also went on a PGP class at my local hospital (physio had referred me there)

Im still in agony now, even after physio. I ve had to stop driving, it kills me using the pedals. Turning over in bed is awful, but im just hoping that when i have my daughter it will go.

I have heard PGP gets worse, the bigger you get which was the case with me.

Its not nice to be always in pain, but im sure its worth it in the end :-)

MagicMikesThong · 07/08/2012 11:17

Thank you MrsPaynie Smile

Honestly don't even think I could get myself to the docs at the moment, but I will ring and see if I can get an appointment.

It just seems to have come on so suddenly, it's bizarre. I didn't have it at all the last time, but when I gave birth I felt something "go" IYSWIM, and I've suffered mildly with pelvic problems ever since.

This in addition to lovely all day sickness.......

How did you manage in your second pregnancy?

MagicMikesThong · 07/08/2012 11:20

Hi LittleSugaPlum

Did yours start gradually or did it become painful really suddenly?

What did you do from 8 weeks to 20 weeks while you were waiting for physio?

Sorry to hear you are suffering too Sad

Ow thank god its not just me not that I would wish this on anyone I just thought I was all alone

I am 9 weeks today and have been having pain for a week or so in my girley bone at the front and aware of movements making it worse and turning over in bed etc! I had this with DS2 and it got so bad they did a c estion at 33 weeks as my consultant said he couldnt let me carry on like this - I have had both hips cut in half and rebuild with pins, plates and screws and when pregnant with DS 2 I still had one set of these still in place!

Make sure you keep your knees together to turn over in bed, when getting out of car turn body, keep legs together and get out, when going up stairs its one le up and then bring them together - bathing really helps and so does being on all 4's as takes weight off pelvis! I bought myself a support belt too last time as NHS recommend them but dont pay for them in this part of the country. I ended up on crutches at 18 weeks with DS2, but was hoping not to get it this time but am gutted how early it seems to of happened :(

Go to physio and doctors I am sure they can help you - they have already told me there is nothing they can do because of my hips :(

LittleSugaPlum · 07/08/2012 11:32

It was just suddenly, it started in my coccyx, back of legs at first, i got shooting pains down my legs, the best way to described it was, if you have ever fallen badly on ur back or bottom and its like all your insides were badly bruised and tender.

I am lucky that i dont have other children to look after whilst in so much pain, and im self employed and work from home.

If i was employed there was no way i would of managed to go to work.

I went to my GP 3 times from 8 weeks to 20 weeks and was told it was my muscles relaxing due to pregnancy and was prescribed co-codamol 500mg.

Taking co-codamol does help but my MW told me not to take it every day due to being pregnant.

I just used to and still do hobble round the house! I walk very slowly if walkiing to the corner shop, and walking round town is a no no for me.

Do not push supermarket trollys, hoover or mop any floors as this really agrivates the problem.

I have a cleaner now, just until the baby is born, and i do my shopping online or go with DH and we take our time round the supermarket.

Its the worst pain ever and i wouldnt wish it on my worst ememy

soandsosmum · 07/08/2012 11:40

I got mine that early if not before.

zoeymlucas' advice is good. I got myself to a private physio asap and have been trying hard to obey the 'rules' to keep it in control.

I was told it's partly cos of having conceived dc2 only 9 months after giving birth to dd1; my ligaments and hormones havent yet gone back to 'normal'.

However, I've found the second trimester much easier, and so when I actually got to see an NHS physio last week (8 weeks after referral, which I'm told is good!!) I had almost no symptoms at all. She's kept me on her books and I'll see her in three weeks. She said it's not uncommon for the pains to be intermittent even day to day as hormone levels vary.

Hope you get some help soon.

Best advice: keep you legs together ;-)

MagicMikesThong · 07/08/2012 11:58

"Best advice: keep you legs together ;-)"

Wish I'd done that 9 weeks ago!!!

Thanks everyone Smile

I really hope that it does get better for a while, though I'm sure it will get worse again.

I did hoover last night, I wonder if that has affected it?

Zoey - my goodness sounds like you have really been through it Sad

Did you have your hip operations because of the SPD/PGP, or was that something different? Sorry to hear they cannot do anything for you.

OP posts:
zoeymlucas · 07/08/2012 12:33

No I just have the wrong shaped bones so had them cut just before the hip joint, turned and rebuilt in the right shape as otherwise my bone would of been so damaged I would of been in a wheel chair by 40! Am 28 and doing well with 2 hip replacements, lol!
hoovering when you have spd is a big no as you will lead and get the motion through your hips without even knowing, hence why no pushing a trolley. As I gor bigger with DS2 I had like 3 -4 baths a day as they really helped me! Was on co-codermal, tramadol patches and even clexane injections as couldnt really move with it

All the hidden 'joys' of pregnancy we didnt know before starting this journey, lol!

MagicMikesThong · 07/08/2012 13:20

Ah, I see - isn't it great that they were able to do that for you, though not so great having to go through it all!

I think the thing that is making it worse for me is that if I was say, 32 weeks or something, I'd be thinking, well only 8ish weeks to go - but I have 31 weeks to go!! I am really hoping that it goes away as some people have said in the second trimester....

OP posts:
Londonmrss · 07/08/2012 14:37

I have a tiny bit of reassurance. I had really badly at 15 weeks. Absolute agony, like being stabbed in my pubis. I wore a support belt for a few days and was really careful- didn't do any yoga or anything. It cleared up after 10 days.
I'm now 29 weeks and get the odd tiny twinge, but nothing major, So even if you do have it now, it doesn't mean it will last for your entire pregnancy!

MagicMikesThong · 07/08/2012 14:44

Oh Londonmrss you have made my day! I'm hoping and praying....

Where can I get a support belt from?

OP posts:
Londonmrss · 07/08/2012 14:52

I just got one from a chemist- it's like this one: www.madeformums.com/reviews/pregnancy-products/bump-bands-and-belts/emma-jane-maternity-support-belt/645.html and it just really helps to keep the hips stable when you feel like they might dislocate at any moment!

MrsPaynie · 07/08/2012 14:54

Londonmrs I wish I'd had your luck! You should be able to get your support belt from your physio. I've stopped wearing mine now as it doesn't help anymore, but it did for the first few weeks. I've had spd in all three of my pregnancies (first from 25ish weeks, second from 9/10 weeks and this time from about 13/14 weeks) each time I've ended up on crutches and not able to walk unaided. There is a lot of support and advice on the pelvic partnership website, may be worth you taking a look?

TruthSweet · 07/08/2012 16:02

My first pg symptom with DD4 was SPD pain (I didn't know I was pg at the time) but I am now 33w and don't have any pain in my pelvis unless I do something daft like push something sideways with my foot! I had SPD pretty badly with DD1 after bouncing down the stairs on my bottom at 24 weeks, I had it from 6 weeks with DD2 but it soon subsided and wasn't bad at all and I don't even remember having it with DD3.

I used a wide elastic support belt with a narrow firm belt over the top for maximum support. I got given these by the physio dept at the local hospital (as well as the crutches I used!)

lollipoppi · 07/08/2012 16:36

Hi op, I had this really early on, it was terrible so I feel your pain! I thought it was SPD too, shooting pains in my bottom (front and back) and down my legs, however it just suddenly stopped at around 12 weeks and it's not come back since, now 16 weeks
I would get booked in at your docs though to get a physio appt just incase

MoonHare · 07/08/2012 17:59

You might be lucky and live in an area with decent NHS physio treatment. You will only know this by visiting GP. If you're not lucky then I would urge you to visit a chiropractor, if you can afford it.

I've had SPD in all 3 pregnancies first one wasn't til right at the end and I didn't realise it wasn't normal. Second time I saw GP went to hospital physio clinic for a dismissive consultation where I was given a belt, an exercise sheet with exercises I could not do due to SPD (!) and was waved off with a cheery "see you again if you need crutches" Hmm I struggled to the end and could hardly walk but thankfully did not need crutches.

Third time around (I'm 29 weeks now) I saw a different midwife who recommended a local chiropractor, I didn't bother with the NHS and went to see the chiropractor at 13 weeks. The treatment has been wonderful, the pubic pain I started with has gone completely I now only have trouble with my sacrum and she fixes this each time I go. It can't be 'cured' during pregnancy but the discomfort can be minimised and you can be kept stable by the correct treatment. I can walk, push the pushchair, turn over in bed sooooo much easier than last time.

Best wishes

MagicMikesThong · 07/08/2012 18:16

Thank you so much everyone for your replies.
I am having a bit of a moment here - feel so useless and in tears. Have written a list of everything that needs done tonight for DH and just can't see how it will all happen - none of it I can do and it's all pretty essential. Sad

Can't get GP appointment til Monday - don't know how I'm going to cope.

OP posts:
sundaesundae · 07/08/2012 18:18

Surely this is an episode that counts as emergency? Do you thinking calling the red cross medical equipment people and hiring some crutches would help?

I am 9 weeks and already had hip/pelvis problems and I am today gettting definite pains. Grr, I was hoping this would not be the case, but you have my ultimate sympathy, sounds dreadful.

MagicMikesThong · 07/08/2012 18:32

I don't know sundaesundae - don't know what they can do. Might ring NHS direct and see what they say.....

I might be able to offer a bit of hope, don't panic just yet. I was the same getting these exact pains from 9 weeks with this pregnancy, I knew what they were as around 20 wks with the first I had moderate to bad SPD and ended up with very very limited mobility from that point through to the end of the pregnancy and for many months after.

This time, I had early intervention from the obstetric physio at 10wks and I have been seeing them regularly. For me it seems that my hips can easily go a little out of place and then the pain starts. She will examine how my straight my pelvis is and make adjustments if needed. It has really helped, I am 29 weeks and pain free today. I have done a few other things (pilates in pregnancy, I'm careful of how I move and the position I sleep in and I sleep on a 4 inch memory foam topper). I expected to be housebound given my previous pregnancy but so far it is going well.

OctoberOctober · 07/08/2012 20:06

I don't know if I have this too, have had terrible pain in one side of my groin today. I am hoping it is just from 'overdoing' it at pregnancy yoga last night (if such a thing is possible!) but it came on out of nowhere. It was painful driving home tonight, gear changes not nice at all.

Googling has helped even less than usual, the only thing that comes up is spd / pgp which I am really hoping it is anything but.

I'm currently 30 weeks so it wouldn't be that unusual... Got a doctors appt on Monday anyway, desperately hoping it will disappear before then.

MagicMikesThong · 08/08/2012 09:19

Sorry to hear you are suffering October Sad

I managed to get a docs appt at 4.20 today so I will report back later.....

Hope it goes well at the doctors today and they can help!
I'm having one hell of a day today, even sitting is painful. Bless my DS though, he just brought me his blanket and told me "don't worry I'll make you better". Feel terrible for not being able to run around with him and play on the floor though.
