Cast iron stomach...

Hi

I'm in my 6th week and I've been talking about morning sickness with my DH. He thinks that I'm not going to have too many problems with this as I have a cast iron stomach - it really does take a lot for something to affect me, while he doesn't have the same luck.

So my question is... Has anyone else noticed this? Or has it not made any difference at all Smile

So far so good for me, but I'm only 5+3 and it could still strike. I have a cast iron stomach, too, and am rarely sick normally.

However, not banking on that providing too much protection here! Wink

Interesting theory. It holds true for me - I very very rarely get stomach-sick when not pregnant (don't get food poisoning when travelling, etc), and I had also very little morning sickness. Just a bit of queasiness/fussiness about food in the evenings.

That said, many people find it doesn't kick in till the 8th week so you may yet get it...

fishybits · 07/08/2012 10:47

Don't bet on it or think that if you haven't got it yet then you won't. It's very very rare for me to get an upset tummy or throw up due to anything except sea sickness but my god did I get morning sickness after 10 weeks and right up until she was born. I even threw up after she was born but apparently that was hormones.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 07/08/2012 10:57

I wouldn't think the theory holds water, as it's hormonal changes that cause the nausea rather than "being bothered" by something iyswim. (I get sick at the drop of a hat but didn't get morning sickness!)

KFFOREVER · 07/08/2012 11:24

I very rarely vomit and so far I haven't vomited yet but Im going through 24/7 nausea which is horrible.

FreeButtonBee · 07/08/2012 11:32

And even if you're not actually sick, the nausea, if you get it, is a killer...

BuntyCollocks · 07/08/2012 11:34

I usually haev a cast iron stomach, and had no morning sickness with DC1. With this pregnancy, I was sick and nauseous from 7dpo to 16 weeks.

lauratheexplorer · 07/08/2012 11:45

I have a pretty robust stomach normally but the nausea with pregnancy was hell. I only actually vomited twice or three times and that was because blackcurrant squash set it off. For some reason I just couldn't stomach it and still have a bit of an aversion. The sickness wasn't as bothersome as the nausea.

Paperclips · 07/08/2012 12:12

I thought/hoped this thought this might be the case for me. I am rarely sick or nauseous apart from getting dreadful sea/ travel sickness. I had nothing more than a bit of nausea in the first trimester, and it was rarely bad.

However I don't think it proves anything as I know plenty of people who were the other way, eg sicky people who had no morning sickness or those with tough stomachs who got it bad.

isambardo · 07/08/2012 12:35

I get sick very easily (food poisoning a few times every year) and have massively improved in pregnancy, so the opposite of your husband's theory is true for me!
Thanks baby! :)

stowsettler · 07/08/2012 13:33

I'm definitely in this boat. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've vomited due to illness in the past and I've had very, very little nausea.
Mind you, I also have an extremely high tolerance level to drugs of any kind, so it's my theory that I tolerate hormone increases very well too Smile

PeshwariNaan · 07/08/2012 13:50

Sorry while I LOL. I have the world's most cast-iron stomach. Nothing makes me sick and I eat everything. I was certain I would have no sickness.

Well, lo and behold I was violently ill at least twice a day for 10 weeks, with horrible nausea throughout the day, complete loss of appetite, no tolerance for food smells, you name it.

I hope you don't get sick, but don't count on your cast-iron stomach to protect you!!! :)

Lora1982 · 07/08/2012 13:52

could be some truth in it OP. i never really got any sickness (touch wood... im 18wks) at worst i felt really hungry or like i couldnt handle as much on a plate as before but never really nausea

Moominsummermadness · 07/08/2012 13:55

I wouldn't bank on it. I haven't had a stomach bug for 15 years, but was really sick during this pregnancy weeks 6-14 and with my youngest daughter. Fingers crossed for you though!

bonzo77 · 07/08/2012 13:59

"cast iron stomach" means that your guts don't react to irritants and toxins in food. Morning sickness is the result of your brains response to the hormones. The nausea in particular is "centrally mediated" ie controlled by your brain. So no, the 2 are not related. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I have vomited in the last 10 years if you ignore pregnancy. But throw pregnant hormones into the mix and I'm vomiting several times a week and nauseous constantly.

redandyellowbits · 07/08/2012 14:08

Another one with a cast iron stomach here.

I suffered with hyperemesis for 7 months with all 3 of my pregnancies. I am now 37+6 and still throwing up.

So, no, I don't believe having a cast iron stomach makes any difference, as pg sickness is thought to be hormone-related.

Kirsty240287 · 07/08/2012 14:38

Sorry to dash your hopes but I'm only ever sick when I've had too much to drink, however during this pregnancy I starting being sick at 6-7wks and it stopped at 13-14wks, ended up on medication for a while, I still feel nauseous now and I'm 16wks on thurs!

Bumpincharge · 07/08/2012 14:54

I didn't think I'd get that lucky, but I thought I should ask!

I'm keeping an eye on what I eat, do we'll see how it goes!

Thanks a lot ladies Smile

I'm similar in this way but to be honest being able to puke stuff up actually helps with my sickness (well for me anyway!) The absolute worst is having the extreme nausea and not puking or being able to :(

mrsbugsywugsy · 07/08/2012 14:58

I heard that you are more likely to get morning sickness if you normally get seasickness. This held true for me; I don't get seasick, and hardly had any morning sickness.

I don't have a 'cast iron stomach' generally - I often get an upset stomach from stress, or change of food when travelling, for example.

doublevodkaandcoke · 07/08/2012 15:11

Sorry, another one to disprove the theory here!

I have always had a cast iron stomach. Very rarely sick, never sea sick/sick from too much alcohol etc. For this reason I thought I wouldnt get morning sickness.

However, from weeks about 8 to 17 of my pregnancy I vomited every single day. Yuk!

whatsoever · 07/08/2012 15:13

In my adult life almost all my puking has been from booze - I think I've had stomach bugs maybe 2 or 3 times other than that.

I was only sick 3 times (so far!) from morning sickness, and all were from brushing my teeth. I did feel horribly queasy from about 7 to 12 weeks though, which is worse that throwing up in my book.

crochetcircle · 07/08/2012 16:14

No connection - and it's nothing like having a dicky tummy. It's more like travel sickness or vertigo. You can learn to control it by eating little and often in my experience.

aries24 · 07/08/2012 16:25

First pregnancy I was seriously nauseas! The second hardly anything!

loveschocolate · 07/08/2012 17:11

I haven't had food poisoning / vomiting bug since I picked something very nasty up on the farm aged 13 (22 years ago!). Also no seasickness even crossing the Irish sea when people are chundering everywhere. My mother had no MS with 2 children. So I though I was guaranteed not to get MS. Silly me. Didn't actually vomit though dry retched and felt seriously nauseous from week 5 through to week 11 to the point where I could barely function and was developing aversions to food, drinks and even water. As some others have said, I wished I was actually vomiting as it may have made me feel better.
