Nighties to give birth in?!

Where the hell is everybody get such things? I'm leaving this a bit late as currently overdue, but whenever I've gone shopping for a nightie big enough to cover both bump and dignity I've got nowhere!

So what do others do? Are there special nighties you can get or are you just wearing big ones? I really don't want to spend much so don't really care much what it looks like - just want the coverage!!!

I got mine from Primark.

JockSprockPooPongMcPlop · 04/08/2012 20:21

I got a big cheap t-shirt from the supermarket. Not very attractive, but it did the job.

propercharlie · 04/08/2012 20:22

I have bought 3 size 20 nighties from Primark :)

milkysmum · 04/08/2012 20:24

Pre pregnant I'm a size 10 but bought a size 16 button front nightie from Matalan which did the job nicley (not very glamouras but hay ho!). Button front was fab for skin to skin immediatley afterwards and for breastfeeding. All the best X

My mum bought be a pack of nursing nighties from mothercare. They were quite expensive (think she wanted to 'treat' me as I was feeling a bit fed up at the time) but have poppers down the front, accommodate bump and are long enough to keep dignity. I plan on wearing one of those.

Quip · 04/08/2012 20:26

I had an old nightshirt in which I gave birth to all three kids. You don't need to be worrying about covering up your dignity, I'm afraid :o

There are special nighties for people who are a bit under-resourced common-sense wise, and a bit over-resourced financially.

Flossbert · 04/08/2012 20:30

I did it starkers. Didn't strike me as peculiar jn the least when I happened to mention it to friends recently in a similar conversation to this. Their faces indicated it was a bit peculiar to wear nothing at all! Meh. I was mostly in the water anyway!

Hope you find something before you pop, or just go au naturel - sure your dignity will be out the window by the end of it anyway!

Susieloo · 04/08/2012 20:31

I bought two size 18 nighties from sainsburys which covered bump and were easy for feeding because they were strappy, they were also long enough to make me feel covered up, the maternity ward was also boiling hot so I was glad they were quite lightweight.

Flosie1989 · 04/08/2012 20:56

I bought a size 18 nightie from primark for £4 went straight in the bin afterwards!

ClaimedByMe · 04/08/2012 21:01

Dont buy anything expensive, thankfully I never because it went right in the bin due to the mess, think I had supermarket cheapies!

EmptyCrispPackets · 04/08/2012 21:06

Primark, I bought some last week for general pregnancy slobbing about and they are lovely. Soft material and pretty design. I got a grey and also a black one.

These would be fine, just go sizes bigger. £4 each.

Chunkychicken · 04/08/2012 23:10

I bought a black patterned button-down nightie from Primark when I was heavily pg with my DD & used that for labour & generally afterwards, as I felt it was less likely to stain/show stains being black, & if it did, it didn't cost much, so could throw it. I did get a much bigger size than normal but I've kept it and will use it during my current DC's labour, when I'm not in the birthing pool. I also bought 2 other cheap button-down nighties for breastfeeding.

I'm asking for some maternity/nursing pjs as gifts this time tho, as I'd like something comfy to wear after when knocking around the house in the day or 2 post birth, as I'm heeding another experienced MNter's advice; if you're in pjs, people will treat you more kindly/not expect you to be looking after them. Again, dark coloured bottoms to prevent stainage Blush

chubbychipmonk · 05/08/2012 00:36

Primark all the way!

Mooney1 · 05/08/2012 00:36

An old black maxi dress, it's comfy, can pull up or down and doesn't matter if it gets wrecked.

Badgerina · 05/08/2012 00:36

I just got naked Grin Granted, I gave birth in the pool, but yeah, naked.

I would probably go to Primark for something cheap and cheerful and that I didn't mind if it got messy or ruined Smile

ArtyJennie · 05/08/2012 08:51

Ive got one of dh's baggy t shirts. Though last time I was naked (had been in the birthing pool- and refused to get dressed whilst 10cms and in pain!)

Indith · 05/08/2012 08:55

Just pack a big t-shirt.

My default labour setting is naked. I go into labour, I strip.

Superslinger · 05/08/2012 18:47

Haha, 'I go into labour, I strip.' I like that!

Been to primark and stocked up on cheap rubbish. Thanks ladies!

I Had a big tshirt of my husband's but gave birth in the buff (wasn't even in a pool). Why anyone would want clothes in the way is beyond me. I wore one of my oversized Primark nighties once I'd showered. I've started wearing it again now that I'm pregnant with my second. My best recommendation is to get a larger size summer dressing gown (thin cotton) in case you need to walk anywhere mid labour. In my case it was down the corridor to the toilet.

teachpeach · 05/08/2012 19:53

I wore one of my husbands shirts - lovely comfy cotton for when I got hot, and easy to unbutton/ button up when needed, and not too long to get in the way at the business end!

rogersmellyonthetelly · 05/08/2012 19:55

I bought a cheapie £6 job from asda. It is a bit short but tbh once you get changed into your nightie in labour, you really won't be coming out of the delivery room until you have had the baby, a shower, and a change of clothes! Don't spend a lot of money on something you plan to give birth in, you will be amazed at the mess I almost guarantee it.

GnocchiNineDoors · 05/08/2012 20:01

I honestly cant remember what I was wearing when I gave birth (7months ago). I know I laboured in a giant shirt, and I know I had my.nighty.on on the postnatal.ward.

I think they might have put me in a gown (prepped and in theatre but ended up forceps).

Got my nightie from primark.

Totobear · 05/08/2012 20:03

Large, old t shirt - but quite frankly, I think I had it all hanging out at some stage. You get past being embarassed!

AnneOfCleavers · 05/08/2012 20:03

I got a really cheap one from Asda.

CaptainHetty · 05/08/2012 20:04

I just used an oversized t shirt. Covering your dignity will be the least of your worries when it comes down to it :o
