Bio Oil - love it or hate it?

I hate the rotten stuff. Bought a large bottle of it as everyone has said how good it is for preventing / lessening stretch marks.

It has a funny smell, doesn't spread over my skin very well and just sits there, taking forever to soak in, so I can't put it on in the morning before I get dressed.

It was damn expensive too so being the stubbon moo that I am, I'm going to use it all, but never again!

What do the rest of you think?

Hate it! Did nothing for me except make me feel greasy! Sad

MrsHelsBels74 · 11/07/2012 20:28

I used it throughout my 1st pregnancy & didn't end up with any stretch marks. Obviously I have no way of knowing if this was down to bio-oil or not but I swear by it. I only ever used it at night though when wearing pyjamas so it didn't matter if it stained or not.

FloweryBoots · 11/07/2012 20:36

I like it. Been using it as my regular moisturiser including on face ever since preg with DS (who is now two). Admit the smell could eb nicer, though DH seems to like it more than me! I've not had an issue with it not soacking in - was sceptical it would and was very plesantly surprised. You don't need much though.

FloweryBoots · 11/07/2012 20:37

Oh, and for anyone who does like it/want some, it's much cheaper on amazon. Big bottle half the price it is in boots.

itdoesnthurttohavemanners · 11/07/2012 20:40

Hate it. Same as you, will finish it just because it cost so much. But the smell is awful and it's greasy!

MUCH prefer my big tub of Clinique's body butter!!

I love it OP, but I've got dry skin! Want to sell your bottle?!

Newtothisstuff · 11/07/2012 20:43

Love love love.. 2 pregnancies and no stretch marks for me !! It's work the grease marks on your clothes haha

bronze · 11/07/2012 20:44

Well I used it and got covered in stretch marks
It's luck and genetics

GaryTankCommander · 11/07/2012 20:46

I don't buy into the prevents stretch marks. I used it for about a week during my pregnancy before I decided I give up because it made me feel greasy and dirty. I too have NO stretch marks!

GobblersKnob · 11/07/2012 20:48

I used it morning and night with ds and ended up looking like a pink zebra.

Used nothing with dd, got not a single one.

Some people think it's actually quite bad for you, this kind of thing.

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 11/07/2012 20:55

Bio oil was pap for me. Didn't like the texture or smell an oil isn't as nourishing for the skin as cream.

Palmers cocoa butter is the best. And you can get fragrance free if the smells too strong for you. And the olive oil one is good too.

coffeeandcream · 11/07/2012 21:01

Sastra ha ha! No point in selling it, I only have an inch left in the bottom of the bottle.

Horrid, nasty, stinky greasy, icky slime that it is!

I came up horribly allergic to cocoa butter during pregnancy, never had a problem before so slathered it all over, the next day I had a very red, very itchy bump Sad

abigboydidit · 11/07/2012 21:12

Not a fan! I used this with DS and am using it again this time and love it.

Fieldette · 11/07/2012 22:14

I find the best way is to rub the bio oil in as best you can and then apply a layer of moisturiser - preferably a light one - immediately over the top and rub it in, it seems to seal the moisture in really well and stop it feeling greasy.

I do this all the time and it works a treat.

Sastra · 11/07/2012 22:16

I like to put it in the bath...and I must be odd as I love the smell!

WipsGlitter · 11/07/2012 22:18

I hated the smell. I got Clarins stuff - v expensive but I don't have a single stretch-mark!!

Chunkychicken · 11/07/2012 23:18

I just used Palmers cocoa butter moisturiser and didn't get any stretch marks, but don't think creams, lotions or potions make a jot of difference; they just help with the itchy/surface feelings.

I only used bio-oil for dealing with old scars and have found it really useful. I guess because its used in far smaller quantities and in a limited location. Did find it reduced redness and reduced the raised nature of it. It could take a little while to soak in, so only used it at night.

It was also really good for the incredibly dry & flakey skin on my hands after my DD was born, caused by all the hand-washing (nappy changes, before and after feeds etc). Again, bio-oil last thing at night and a good cream for during the day were the only things that did the job.

DangerMousey · 12/07/2012 08:56

I am just using johnsons baby nighttime oil: a fraction of the price, smells much nicer, and I reckon an oil is just an oil, right?

Pascha · 12/07/2012 09:02

MIL uses it for a surgery scar for throat cancer and the scar is much much better than it could have been. She no longer feels she needs to wear a scarf every day.

I like it too. I have no sense of smell so that aspect doesn't affect me. Its less greasy than some of DS's eczema creams (which, incidentally, are also all full of petroleum byproducts). I'm still alive so it can't be that dangerous

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 12/07/2012 09:12

I love it, DH oils me up every night which is half the fun :o
I don't mind the smell and I only use it at night so no oil marks!

PetiteRaleuse · 12/07/2012 09:12

I can't be bothered to use it every day am not using it during this pregnancy as I thik stretch marks will happen or not whatever you do. However I had two operations last year including a cesarean and both have pretty big scars and I think bio oil helped them disappear more quickly - I used it for about 6 months post op, and a year on you'd have to look pretty closely to see anything there.

Makinglists · 12/07/2012 09:14

Didn't use it in pregnancy but have been using it on my rather lumpy c-section scar and it does seem to be helping to flatten it and make it less red.
