Hello,

Hope you don't mind me asking for some advice here?

My dsil is 35 weeks today and went for a midwife appointment this afternoon. She has been sent to the hospital as she has had itching all over, especially feet and arms, which gets worse at night.

Has anyone had any experience of this?

Many thanks :)

You are all stars x thank you all so so much x

Well after much debate between various Dr's there will be no baby today.

Sil's levels have stopped rising but have not come down. This is the best news out of generally bad news I think.

The plan now is to monitor the baby's heart every 4 hours, take blood every 24 hours and continue the level of medication she is on.

If the blood level starts to rise again they will get the baby out by c section. If they stay the same or start dropping then as long as baby is happy they will leave her and induce at 37 weeks. They have also said that she may go into labour naturally. If she does that's fine.

I will be going out to get the things you have suggested tomorrow :)

Thanks again xx

Good news that levels are not rising! Hopefully the meds will start to work their magic and her levels will come down. If baby is being checked every 4 hours (and I'm sure your DSIL is counting every kick too) the Drs will soon realise if baby is not happy and get him/her out ASAP.

It sounds like DSIL and baby are being really well looked after.

ontheedgeofwhatever · 08/07/2012 18:47

Really pleased to hear levels have stopped rising, chances are that tomorrows test will show they've started to come down. As others have said they will want to keep baby inside as long as possible which is why they're being so indecisive.

It sounds as if she may have had OC for a while without realising it. So often people put the itching down to just being pregnant and it never occurs to them its anything else so the bile levels keep climbing and the itching becomes ferocious. If she has another baby rest assured they'll probably start weekly blood tests to check for it at about 28 weeks and medicate as soon as they see the levels climbing

Really hope tomorrow sees another improvement.

PS this thread has reminded me I forgot to take my medication at lunch so going to rush off and do it now!

kittykatsforever · 09/07/2012 12:53

That's good news, fingers crossed she gets to 37wks then baby will be full term. My sister is getting induced today so by tomorrow I will have a new little niece or nephew Grin

mumofjust1 · 09/07/2012 14:38

Sil's blood levels are rising again.

The Dr said that they won't bother with the liver scan and said she has had enough of being poked and prodded for blood and has had enough medication pumped in to her.

So she will have a section later today or in the morning.

Baby is absolutely fine despite a bit of worry to to his heart trace late last night -bit of a scare there.

So this time tomorrow I will be an Auntie for the first time to baby Billy!

OP I was admitted to hospital at 36 weeks with obstetric cholestasis and pre-eclampsia. I was in hospital for a week, with the liver scan and blood tests, for a week before DS was induced - they try to get baby as close to 37 weeks as they can as that's effectively full term. DS was exactly 37 weeks.

As you've found, they will keep changing the goal posts. I remember DH being told to come in on the Sunday and I'd be induced on the Monday. He arrived at 11am on the sunday to find I'd already been induced. They will just keep doing what they can to keep baby safe. From my point of view, it was all hugely truamatic, so it would be good for you to provide an ear to your SIL in the coming months. This won't be how your SIL wanted her baby to arrive and she may feel that she's let her baby down.

mumofjust1 · 09/07/2012 22:52

Thanks fire - will bear all that in mind. Saw sil this evening and she was in quite good spirits Smile

She had a cervical sweep early afternoon and has been having pains on and off since, the nurses have said that she may well go into labour sometime tonight!

They said that her cervix is soft and about 1cm thick - not quite sure what that means? - and her bump has dropped. I think that the baby's head is engaged and sil was complaining of feeling "odd" and isn't very comfortable walking either.

If nothing happens overnight she will have a cesarean tomorrow and has been told she will be the first on the list.

She's actually been quite calm - I'd have been in pieces if I were her, but then I am a complete wuss!

Can't believe that this time tomorrow baby Billy will be here! Grin

OOh, sounds like baby Billy might be getting ready to make an appearance all by himself!

I hope all goes well for your SIL today.

mumofjust1 · 10/07/2012 09:46

Thanks all :)

She has gone into labour naturally. She will have her waters broken about 11.30 this morning. Baby Billy is estimated to be about 4 - 4.5lbs. I'm quite worried about him being so small?

They have said that given his size labour could be quite quick.

Will update :)

OP posts:
kittykatsforever · 10/07/2012 09:51

Good luck then, I'm sure she'll be fine and they will be more then prepared for baby billy being small, that's just an estimate anyway and they often get it wrong even by a few pounds, keep us updated!
My sis is in labour too, they will break her waters at 2 if they havnt allready gone! Natural is way better then c section especiakky as pointed out oc babies are usually quick! X

mumofjust1 · 10/07/2012 11:24

Thanks Kitty - all the best to your sister! I will keep her and baby in my prayers too :)

Blimey, Billy is not hanging around is he? My consultant told me that it's almost as if OC babies get pissed off being inside with all those bile acids floating around and they often decide to come of their own accord before things get too hairy inside!

Please don't worry about the weight, as kitty said, it's just a guestimate. DS2 had a growth scan 4 hours before he was born- scan showed he was 7lb but he was 8lb on arrival! When DS2 was in NICU the biggest baby in his room was only 3lb8oz and all were doing well. Infact 2 of them went home weighing under 4lb while we were there!

In any case the gestation is the big thing as it determines how physically developed the baby is. 35 weeks is GREAT as everything should be pretty much there and working - respiritory system, suck reflex etc- although a bit of monitoring or support may be needed.

DS2 didn't have any eyebrows or eyelashes though as they come around 37 weeks - looked v odd!

mumofjust1 · 10/07/2012 15:02

Thanks Mrclaypole - bless your ds with no eyebrows or eyelashes! :)

Its good to know that the weight could be out a bit and that babies do go home under 4lbs!

She is on a drip - is it syntocin? - to help the contractions along and all is ok with dsil and baby too, which is the main thing.

Sorry to be brief but on my phone :)

Thanks again to you ALL for all the information and experiences you have shared with me - it's been incredibly helpful and has saved us a lot of worry!

Kitty - any news on your dsis?

OP posts:
SpottyTeacakes · 10/07/2012 17:20

I really wouldn't think it will be long if she's on the drip Smile

mumofjust1 · 10/07/2012 18:41

I hope not spotty!

Dsil had an epidural about half an hour ago, she's doing really well db said - I'll have no nails left by the morning!

OP posts:
SpottyTeacakes · 10/07/2012 18:48

Yes epidural is often needed with the drop. Hopefully she can get a couple of hours rest before baby arrives. Ooo I'm all excited for you!

kittykatsforever · 10/07/2012 20:52

Hi mumof, my sis has had a little girl, 7lb8!!
At 2 and a half wks early, she had her waters broken at 5 and had her by 6, she had no pain relief as it was so quick! She had an epidural first time and wanted it again but in 15 mins by the time he got there she was pushing!! She says never again lol oh and she aparently looks like me Grin

mumofjust1 · 10/07/2012 21:05

Oh how lovely KittyKat! Congratulations!

Just came on to update - baby Billy was born at 8.40pm weighing in at 5lb 15oz :)

Mum and baby both well!
