Do you really have to take them EVERYWHERE with you? Even if you are just nipping round to the corner shop for a pint of milk. They are a4 sized so don't just fit into a normal sized handbag either.

I get the importance of them it's just such a bloody pain sometimes.

No

Well at least I never did. If you are worried take them in the car maybe? Then at least they are close to hand.

NeedlesCuties · 04/07/2012 07:43

No. I think it's just if you're going somewhere which is far from home or from a hospital.

For example, if I'm nipping to the corner shop for milk I won't bring them as I'm a 5 min walk from home, but I will bring them if I'm going on a long car journey to other side of the country to visit friends.

Also, I don't bring them out with me till around 34 weeks pregnant, but that's just my view.

How far pregnant are you? Is it your first?

SpottyTeacakes · 04/07/2012 07:43

Mine stayed in my car, I had/have fortnightly appointments so means I won't forget them!

AmethystMoon · 04/07/2012 07:44

I didn't, just to doctor/ MW appt. not practical and anyway when I had my DD last week it was so quick that they barely had time to look at them! The MW just said there's no time I will just ask you some questions Grin
She did have a quick look at my birth plan whilst I was in labour but she didn't have much chance.... 'twas a speedy arrival by DD Grin

BikeRunSki · 04/07/2012 08:06

What needles said. But I did have them with me at work too from about 30 weks, because my mother and I both have a history of early births.

mrsalwaysawake · 04/07/2012 08:15

I think we took them when we went away to a wedding a few hours away at about 5 months, but apart from that, only to appointments.
I finished work at 34 weeks so didn't take them there, and from then on, was never terribly far from home.

incyspider · 04/07/2012 08:22

I have to say I'm really glad I carried mine with me to work at about 26 weeks I started getting severe pains and tightenings. In the panic and pain I could hardly remember my date of birth never mind anything else! It meant that the hospital (which was out of my normal area) had my dp's contacts details and my history all in one place.

However I do agree there is no need when going to the corner shop. :)

Chunkychicken · 04/07/2012 08:26

I didn't take them anywhere with me with my DD Blush I think I just assumed that they would only be useful in labour & at my appts & nothing else would happen Thankfully DD arrived right on time and I'm not sure they even looked at them in labour, as they started new notes for that!!

I will be carrying my notes in the car from around 24wks & prob take them with me at all times from about 36wks (although not to the corner shop necessarily!).

I would say that you should def take them to work, if only to photocopy them because, something I didn't realise until too late, they take them at labour & you never see them again! :( I was a bit sad to see my pg record go into the deepest darkest recesses of hospital filing!

PickleSarnie · 04/07/2012 08:37

I've never taken them anywhere other than to midwife appointments and the hospital when in labour. There's nothing really interesting on my notes though that doctors need to be made aware off.

sparklekitty · 04/07/2012 09:19

Mine stay in the boot of my car unless were going somewhere like PIL then I'll take them just in case (28 weeks) I only started carrying them at about 20 weeks when I had a car crash and didn't have my notes with me

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 04/07/2012 10:39

I take mine everywhere but I have a massive handbag as I think it's one of those you're better safe than sorry with. If I got hit by car crossing the road, I'd want the hospital to have my maternity notes.

WeeDot · 04/07/2012 11:05

FluffyJawsOfDoom that's what I think I should be doing so have ordered a bigger handbag with room for my notes and the inordinate amount of chocolate and snacks I keep with me

NeedlesCuties I am 16+5 and this is my first.

Thank for your responses, at least I don't feel too bad now about buggering off out without them

welliesandpyjamas · 04/07/2012 11:12

I've been quite slack about carrying them around this time with my third well, let's face it they don't fit nicely in my handbag but I regretted it when I collapsed on the school yard recently (at 24 weeks) and was sent to hospital by ambulance. I struggled to deliver all the relevant information about my pregnancy and previous births. I'm now happy to crush it in any old how in to my bag, just in case Grin

BionicEmu · 04/07/2012 11:20

Just thought I'd add that I never used to take them anywhere when I was pregnant with DS. But then when I was about 18 weeks I had an accident at work which meant I had to go to a&e, but at a different hospital to the one where I was booked in at. At a&e they gave me a right bollocking about not having my pregnancy notes with me, refused to treat me and sent me by ambulance to the hospital I was booked in at. It wasn't even a pregnancy-related problem, I had reached oddly and caused a muscle in my back to go into spasm.

So since then I have carried them everywhere with me!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 04/07/2012 11:28

:o dot great excuse for a new bag!

jannaref · 04/07/2012 11:43

Depends on their age and where you're going.
At first the are so helpless it's scary to leave them even for a minute

mrsalwaysawake · 04/07/2012 12:03

Wrong thread, jannaref? Grin

minipie · 04/07/2012 12:19

Grin at helpless pregnancy notes.

MsElisaDay · 04/07/2012 12:27

This is the first I've heard that I was supposed to take them anywhere with me other than to see the midwife, or for a scan. I'm 23 weeks.
The midwives I've seen haven't mentioned carrying them around, and I'm sure it doesn't say I should on the documentation anywhere (unless I haven't read it properly, which is quite likely). Oops!
I can't see myself starting either, as they're so big that they won't fit in my work bag. Am definitely going to be a bad mother.

WeeDot · 04/07/2012 12:31

minipie this thread has taken an interesting turn...i've got some bills and tax return that need babysitting if anyone is feeling particularly bad about me leaving them at home Grin

MsElisaDay You will not be a bad mum wags finger no such talk is allowed

OP posts:
missnevermind · 04/07/2012 20:34

You do know you are able to fold them, don't you?
Grin

welliesandpyjamas · 04/07/2012 21:24

Not on mine, because of the plastic thingy (technical term) in the middle :(

TheBigRazzoo · 04/07/2012 22:49

Er, are you supposed to carry your notes around with you - no one's told me that. I'm only 20 weeks though so maybe not yet...?

minipie · 05/07/2012 10:48

Oh and the other thing I've been told is take a photocopy before you go into labour (so sometime in the last few weeks) because after youv'e given birth the hospital will keep the notes so you need your own copy if you want to check or refer to anything.

AKMD · 05/07/2012 10:55

I keep mine in the car so they're always fairly near to wherever I am.
