I have just been reading 'What to expect..' and it sys to wash all fruit, including those that you peel Confused

I'm very good at washing fruit/salad/veg etc but I have never washed a banana and don't get why you would need to!?

Or is it well known amongst pregnant ladies that one should wash ones bananas? I have one every day without fail -eeep

I wouldn't wash a fruit I was going to peel that's a bit ott if u ask me!

Iatemyskinnyperson · 22/06/2012 18:30

I have never in my long life washed a banana

ThePetiteMummy · 22/06/2012 18:30

I would imagine it means fruit with a thinner skin, such as an apple. Although I still can't really see the logic. I definitely wouldn't wash a banana!

YoulllaughAboutItOneDay · 22/06/2012 18:31

What do they mean. Wash before you peel, or afterwards? Neither version makes much sense to me Confused

MerryMarigold · 22/06/2012 18:31

Eh? No, you do not need to wash bananas or oranges. FGS! Have a coffee, a glass of wine and a few peanuts too - this stuff is ridiculous.

YoulllaughAboutItOneDay · 22/06/2012 18:32

P.S It was the food section in 'what to expect' that led to me announcing it was going in the recycling. And I never bin books. They always go to the charity shop. That and Baby Whisperer are the only books in my life to get the wheelie bin treatment!

HappyCamel · 22/06/2012 18:32

Throw that book away, it is full of terrifying bollocks. It's not so much "what to expect" as "what could go wrong". I felt so much better after I gave up reading it at about 15 weeks. The "what to expect the 1st year" is just as bad.

FoxyRoxy · 22/06/2012 18:33

No I wouldn't wash a banana. What to expect is written for the US market and they go way ott there with regards to "safety". If you followed the what not to eat rules I don't think you'd be eating much!

YoulllaughAboutItOneDay · 22/06/2012 18:34

Ha ha HappyCamel a kindred spirit. I always used to mock it - "You could cross the road to go to work, but you might get knocked down by a car. Is it really so hard to stay locked in your house for the next nine months?"

Loudness · 22/06/2012 18:34

phew! youlllaughaboutitoneday I thought exactly the same - before or after? Confused

To be honest I've had it for 5 months now and only just picked it up. Shall avoid before it confuses me more.

For what it's worth, the film was utter shite too

I don't even understand how there can be a film. It has no narrative Confused. I hate anything american with births in it anyway, so am steering clear!

HappyCamel · 22/06/2012 18:40

FGS it even speculates about the safety of herbal teas, apparently they "haven't been proved to be safe". That's what did it for me.

Mind you a lot of the advice is questionable, I've had food poisoning twice in 30 years, once from halloumi salad from a cafe and once from fish from a chippy. I think they were both food hygiene rather than ingredient problems. I eat runny eggs) with a lion mark on and medium rare steak but I am careful where I eat out when pregnant.

GrinGrin at the thought of washing bananas!! Either before or after peeling... The idea is equally funny!

Loudness · 22/06/2012 18:45

Oops didn't mean to post that twice. The banana chemicals may have gone to my head Wink

I've done some crazy pfb stuff in my time but washing peeled fruit, wtf?

loveschocolate · 22/06/2012 21:47

I'm a bit slack about washing fruit so def wouldn't be washing a banana! Tho did pig out on a punnet of unwashed strawberries yesterday and found a small slug on the second last one. That's taught me a lesson!

Loislane78 · 22/06/2012 22:06

You eat that unwashed banana and enjoy it :)

This ridiculous food advice really winds me up. If it said do not eat double portions if shepherds pie during a craving at 31 wks because your lungs will have even less room and you will struggle to get comfy for an hour - that's helpful advice! Maybe that's just me :)

Grin washing bananas. That's brilliant.

The only thing my midwife was adamant about was washing salad (even salad that had been washed and prepared and sold as a bag).

GetOrfMoiiLand · 22/06/2012 22:13

Bless you you crazy pregnant lady Grin

I don't know why I am mocking, mind you. I spent the first few weeks of dd's life washing the pram wheels with milton and a toothbrush in order that they looked pristine.

Badgerina · 22/06/2012 23:07

God I hate that book. I chucked mine out - its SO prissy. What's next? Only using bottled water to wash your fanjo?

whatsoever · 22/06/2012 23:12

I wash fruit and veg I would have washed anyway (like strawberries or stuff that you sometimes find an insect or a bit of soil in) but I've never seen the point of apple washing or the like.

Banana washing is making me eye roll big style though Hmm

BikeRunSki · 22/06/2012 23:18

Just don't even waste your time, money and eyesight on the rest of the "What to Expect...." books

Still ROFL at washing bananas, sorry Loudness. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy, eat as much fruit as you like.
