How many nappies will I realistically need?

I will be having a c section in 13 days (squee!!) and this is my first baby. He is expected to weigh around 7lb (will be 37+0 on the day). I am single and obviously won't be driving for a little while so definitely don't want to run out of nappies. I have a variety of sizes but don't know how many newborn / size 1 I should need?? Can anyone share what worked for them? Thanks :)

Btw sorry to drip feed - have no shops in walking distance and have maybe 1 person who could bring an emergency pack but would rather have plenty myself ready to avoid the situation.

Bank on 12 per 24hrs.

MNP · 12/06/2012 20:13

Congrats :)

Fishpond · 12/06/2012 20:15

Thanks mnp - how soon do you reckon he will need to move up a size??

Also lots of babies are out of size 1 nappies really soon, but dd was in them until 12 weeks and she was 8lb when she was born so I would just get a couple of weeks worth until you know the shape of your baby! How exciting for you :)

PS I was 36 weeks and dd was estimated 7lb the day before she was born Wink

MNP · 12/06/2012 20:16

So 1 small pack every 2 days, have you considered bulk buying from Kiddicare? Delivered to your door?

MNP · 12/06/2012 20:17

The difference between size 1 and 2 is 1 kg so either size will do you the first 6-10 weeks, I use size 3 folded down at the back and front for the nights after 3 weeks as you tend to change less IME

nextphase · 12/06/2012 20:18

Assuming your mainland UK boots deliver, and its free over £40.

Otherwise, MNP has probably got it about right.
We went straight into size 1's, and probably 2's after about a month (when you start reducing the number of nappy changes)

I'm in the US, no kiddiecare here but do have amazon if I get desperate. So far I only have 72 nappies in "newborn" size which goes up to 10lb, I. Going to need more aren't I? I have about 250 in size 1 which is 8-14lb.

SpottyTeacakes · 12/06/2012 20:20

Oh they only do size 1,2,3 etc here no newborn before size 1 I don't think Confused

Springforward · 12/06/2012 20:22

About a dozen a day seems about right to me.

HeadsShouldersKneesandToes · 12/06/2012 20:22

Unless you have had a sizing scan really recently you can't be sure which size you'll need. Could you have a word at customer services at your nearest big supermarket to verify they are OK with this, buy lots and loys of several different sizes and get them to agree that you can bring back unopened packets that you didn't need once you can drive again.

12 per 24 hours is about right for the first few weeks but you could be needing size 0 for longer than you think or size 2 sooner than you think!

Fishpond · 12/06/2012 20:22

Hmmmmmm, ok, so here the newborn size is up to 10lb, about 4.5kg, then Size 1 8-14lb, about 6-6.5kg I think? I'm not very good with kgs!

heads I just had a growth scan 3 days ago and will have another 3 days before birth so crossing fingers I'll know fairly close to exact estimate! I know they can still be off though.

Fishpond, I'm American, and from personal experience, newborn diapers are a waste of time. I found that all diapers we tried started leaking when both DD and DS were getting close to the top weight listed for them. DS started constantly leaking out of newborn diapers when he was 4 days old, so we never even bothered with that size for DD (who was a whole pound and a half smaller than DS at birth) and put here in size 1 the day we got home from the hospital, and that was the way to go. As for package size, I never bought anything smaller than the big boxes of diapers from Costco.

pmgkt · 12/06/2012 20:27

just athought it may be worth getting tiny baby ones too - i know that just complicates things. you say you are having it at 37 weeks and my friend had one at 42 weeks and needed micro / tiny baby nappies. she was 6lb 6 which is possible for one so early. plus they lose weight after birth so may need some at least til they put birth weight back on.

OK, size 1 are 4-11lb in the UK, so you'll need to take care with the sizes were talking about!

We have always ended up at the lower end of the weight range - and moved up way before the upper weight limit.

Amazon UK have some really good nappy offers.

I'd err on the side of largeness if in doubt. We started putting our 3 month old in his brother size 5 (20-44lb) overnight as he was leaking through the size 3s. He still isn't 20lb at 13 mths.

precariouslybalanced · 12/06/2012 20:38

OP, I'm in the US too. DD was born at 6.5lbs, we used one large box of NB Pampers Swaddlers before she outgrew them. Think that was around the 3 week mark. She's been on size 1 of the same nappies ever since - 12 weeks today and weighs 11.5lbs. If you're in NY you can always try diapers.com - little bit pricey (although not as expensive as Amazon) but they deliver super-fast and you'll know a couple of days in advance when you're going to need more. Freshdirect have also started doing baby stuff, including nappies.

I think what helped me most was resigning myself, VERY early on, to changing the baby's clothes far more frequently than any adult would, and having baby laundry pretty much every other day. Once I'd accepted that, the whole but-I-just-changed-you! thing became a lot less stressful.

Congrats and good luck!

Fishpond · 12/06/2012 21:13

Thanks everyone - particularly the 2 in the US as can appreciate size differences are pretty big from here to the UK!

I think I'll just stick with the few newborns I have and then put him in size 1's after. Thanks again all Smile

Think you've got some good advice here re sizes etc but if you run out get on Ocado or Tesco Direct and they'll deliver!! Good chance to stock up on all the other necessities at the same time...chocolate cakes, pastries and jumbo bars of choc!!! Hope all goes well...

Fishpond · 12/06/2012 22:03

Button I'm in the US so unfortunately no supermarkets deliver here Sad. Believe me, if they did I would be a number 1 customer!

Hi fish
It's good advice earlier up the thread to have some cloth nappies in. I used cloth nappies for DD and will have a set for the new arival. I don't use them 100% of the time, but when you're only hanging round the house, it saves money and less worry about running out of the disposables.

Doitnicelyplease · 13/06/2012 03:22

There are loads of places that deliver diapers in the US:
www.diapers.com
www.amazon.com

also
Babies R Us

There are also online drug stores that have any/all baby supplies you might need:

www.drugstore.com

Good luck with the CS. Hope this puts your mind at ease.
