when did you/do you plan to start buying baby stuff?

I have my 12 week scan on thurs and was wondering if it was too early to start buying a few things afterwards as me and DP have booked the day off.
I dont mean cots or big things but maybe a few clothes ?

I started buying/accepting things after 12 weeks. Defintely better to start early. And fun too!

scarletforya · 10/06/2012 12:47

I started at about 30 weeks. People started asking me what I had/needed and gviing me stuff so I got my skates on and got stuff week by week.

I'm 37 weeks now and have most things except the monitor and the bath!

rogersmellyonthetelly · 10/06/2012 13:08

I always start early as soon as my 12 week scan is over. I confess though I already have chosen the nursery furniture, names, colours scheme, bedding (i make all my own nursery stuff) pushchair etc. we have been waiting 3 years for this baby though, so I had a head start!

sparklekitty · 10/06/2012 13:22

I'm 25 weeks and we've bought quite a lot of stuff already. Most of the big stuff and clothes. My DH is working olympic shifts that start on monday and finish a few days before my due date so he won't be around as much to go shopping etc hence us being a bit more organised.

MrsPaynie · 10/06/2012 13:24

Yep I started after my 12 week scan too. Just the little bits, a few clothes and toys etc. I'll get the big things after my 20 week scan in a couple of weeks. I would advise stocking up on nappies too. We buy a box every month with the monthly food shop, so to spread out the cost a little. We also add on a couple of packs of baby wipes and some nappy sacks each time too. Trust me you'll never have enough nappies Smile

MrsFaffnBobbocks · 10/06/2012 13:47

I find that I am pretty tired by 30 weeks so I previously spent my second trimesters collecting what I needed. I'd try and be ready by 33/34 weeks. Some here will have loads of energy right up to the end. But not me, with any of mine. Enjoy!

Angelico · 10/06/2012 16:28

I'm 23 weeks and we are just researching stuff really but have bought some bedding and nappies! :o

AdventuresWithVoles · 10/06/2012 16:50

I like the rule to never buy more than 3 months in advance. Especially after baby is born: cut it to more like 6 weeks in advance max prebuy :). Because you'll see something you like better in that long a period before baby needs it.
The thing is I am fussy & it took me AAaaaaagggges to get my head around things like pram, cot & carseat options, so I felt better buying some of that stuff more than 3 months in advance, if it was a bargain/ good opportunity.

I have friend who didn't buy anything & then produced baby 6 weeks early, her husband went out & bought the first half-suitable item he found for each of everything.

RooibosWithMilk · 10/06/2012 17:27

I've got my 12 week scan on Thursday too! That's officially the date after which DH says I can start to think about making baby-related purchases. Although we told my mum the other week and a few days later she confessed to wandering along the baby aisle in Sainsbury's whilst doing her weekly shop... I guess she's allowed to be excited as it will be her first grandchild :)

chipsandmushypeas · 10/06/2012 17:59

Oooh I'm so excited now! Where are some good places to look? I have a Babies R Us and Mothercare world near me, I've heard Asda is good for nappies, which nappies is everyone buying? Pampers newborn?

Rooibos hope your scan goes well!

Whilst it seems like a long way off at 12 wks, my advice is start sooner rather than later. I haven't suffered as much as some but believe me by 30 wks you'll be wishing you had most stuff as energy levels, mobility and general tolerance levels much lower. Plus if you're like most people I know you'll want to do house stuff; painting etc. and it can all get a bit much later on.

Happy shopping ;)

milk · 10/06/2012 18:35

There is loads to buy so we paced ourselves and started shopping after the 20 week scan. Plus we knew at that point it was going to be a boy so lots of blue Grin

applepieinthesky · 10/06/2012 21:44

We started buying after the 12 week scan. We've bought most of the bigger purchases already - pram, cotbed, carseat because they were all really good deals. Now we can just focus on clothes and little bits and pieces once we know if it's a boy or girl.

Naisy · 10/06/2012 22:26

Helps to start early as once you know what you're after you can take advantage of - and wait - for sales. I got BumGenius V4 nappies for 10.66 each, instead of 17 pounds! Definitely saved us a lot of money by starting at 12 weeks...

Have fun! Smile

WutheringTights · 10/06/2012 22:34

I have my 12 week scan on Thursday too. I'm not planning to buy anything until after the 20 week mark but I'm paranoid and a pessimist and am terrified of jinxing it. Think I'm being a bit over-cautious there though!

OTTMummA · 11/06/2012 08:26

Ah see, what i did this time round was go looking and take a note of all the things i wanted instore, maybe get a few clothes but other things i just made a massive spreadsheet of what baby needed.
Then, i waited until i was on ML (started at 31 weeks for me) and started looking around online for the items i wanted, compared prices, got some voucher codes to get 10,20% off and free delivery.

At the weekend i recieved my maxi cosi cabriofix car seat and family fix base, a ton of nappies, 5 loads of multi pack baby wipes and a playmat from boots and saved nearly £50.00 with a 10% off voucher code, free delivery and then because it was extra points this weekend i recieved 2900 points, so what would of been nearly £400 in mothercare i got for £290 in boots plus an extra £29.00 back to spend in points!
I am also shopping a season ahead, so have bought all babies coats and snowsuits. jumpers, cardigans in the sale because it is now summer, and i have set some money aside to get some summer pieces for next yr, and will get it in size 9-12 months etc.

Sorry, i probably sound like a right geek! or pathetic, but since not being able to walk much i find myself enjoying this kind of thing!

EggsMichelle · 11/06/2012 09:20

My DH is not letting me buy things until 3rd trimester :( although we did accept our first load of second hand stuff yesterday, which I spent hours cooing over and folding tiny grows!!! I think I may have to buy some draws to store it all in!

chipsandmushypeas · 11/06/2012 09:52

^ 'not letting you'?! Hmm

I think I'll start looking around and maybe buy a few sleep suits and vests, trouble is baby will be here in winter and it's all summer clothes out, so will probably have to wait to buy fleecy winter stuff, can't wait!

EggsMichelle · 11/06/2012 10:16

Well I do have my own bank accounts/ free will, but the mocking and huffing would be enough to wish I hadn't bought something too big to put in a cupboard!!!! and we are only 14wks to be fair!

sleeplessinderbyshire · 11/06/2012 10:22

First time round I bought nothing til about 26 weeks (and the cot and car seat arrived the day I went into labour). 35 weeks now and all the stuff from last time has been located but is still in the loft. I'm having the new nursery decorated this week and will start unpacking stuff when I start mat leave at 37 weeks but will keep it all behind closed doors. Moses basket will stay in the loft til I go into labour and then DH will put it in our bedroom just before I bring the baby home. I get very superstitious about tempting fate by having baby stuff available and visible before the baby is born alive and brought home

chipsandmushypeas · 11/06/2012 10:26

eggs my DP started huffing too last night when I said I would like to go shopping after scan. However, he thought I meant to buy a cot/pram! I then said that I meant buy a couple of outfits and booties! Men.

OTT- you and I are cut from the same cloth. I love it too!

felixstow84 · 11/06/2012 17:25

I waited till after 20 week scan. Don't know why but was really anxious about that one. However, have only brought a few bits. Had Boots vouchers which expired.
Probably going to leave most of it till last minute.

festiemum · 11/06/2012 17:32

chips! How was the scan?!

Get your arse over to the mattress graduates thread and fill us in! :o

(seriously, hope it went well! xxx)
