Should I book a holiday abroad if I might be pregnant by then?

Hi. Got a bit of a dilemma. Hubby and I are planning to start a family soon, but have booked a week off work in September together. We both really want to go away abroad to Greece - back to a hotel we stayed at before and fell in love with. We talked about a UK holiday but I don't think it'll be the same. But by then, it's possible I could be either 1 or 2 months pregnant (assuming we get pregnant immediately after trying). It's hard to know what to do. It might take more than the first couple of months of trying to get pregnant and it isn't an issue, or we might fall pregnant straight away!

On the one hand, we both need a break and it might help with conception, having some chill out time on the beach. On the other hand, I could be in the early stages of pregnancy and wonder if the flight could lead to a miscarriage. I read up quite a lot on it and it seems it's safe to fly on all the official health websites but they do mention that nausea might be worse and DVT and miscarriage are a risk. I guess if we didn't book to go away and we weren't pregnant by then, I would feel annoyed that we hadn't just gone away.

I suppose my question to any Mums out there is: would I enjoy a beach break if I was in the early stages of pregnancy, is morning sickness a bit tiring if you're abroad? Has anyone else flown when they're 4 - 8 weeks pregnant?

We'd delay starting a family a bit longer until after a potential September holiday, but I'm 35 so we're sort of thinking that time is of the essence.

Any advice please???

As someone who took 18 months to conceive, I would say at all costs do not stop planning things just because you 'might' be pregnant. Hopefully you will get pregnant straight away, in which case I am sure you will still enjoy the holiday- flying does not cause miscarriage. The only issue is that you are potentially at greater risk of DVT so need to keep hydrated, wear flight socks and move as much as possible. But that is a risk to you rather than the baby.

However you might not get pregnant straight away, in which case you will kick yourselves and be bloody depressed that you didn't book a holiday.

Greece is wonderful and ideal as its not too long a flight, no vaccinations needed etc. We have just come back from Santorini (I am 20 weeks) and it was absolute bliss.

Book the holiday!

It took me 18 months (snap Aworryingtrend !) and I would have had a depressing year and a half if I had cancelled everything! As it happened I ended up going abroad at about 8 weeks and it was absolutely fine (well, aside from no booze or rare steak!)

AThingInYourLife · 07/06/2012 14:21

Don't put your life on hold in case you get pregnant.

Carry on with making plans as normal, then make whatever adjustments necessary if you are in the happy situation of being pregnant.

Don't delay any more if you're 35, just get to it :)

If you feel like I do in the early stages of pregnancy you will enjoy not having to do much of anything for a week, at the very least.

Absolutely book the holiday! Just make sure that there are options for it to be a relaxed sort of holiday (which it sounds like you are planning) because if you do get pregnant (and obviously hope you do) you might find yourself more tired than usual.

We had booked a 10 day trip hiking over the Pyrenees when I was about 8 weeks preg and then found that this was totally unrealistic given how tired I was, so we ended up renting a flat and doing shorter day walks from there, with more siestas, watching films and so on.

Just book the hols. I have never heard that flying could lead to miscarriage. Enjoy your hols. If you are pg then, you can celebrate, no alcohol though ! If not you can ttc over there, a very rainy day in Brazil 4ish years ago allowed us to have a 3.6 yo toddler now. Good luck

MakeTeaNotWar · 07/06/2012 14:37

Oh gosh of course you should book the holiday! I flew to Ireland and then to France when I was 5 weeks and 10 weeks with DD and I flew London - LA - Auckland - Cook Islands - LA - London this year in Feb when I was 4 weeks with DC2 (am 25 weeks now) without any trouble at all but I am very fortunate to have never had any morning sickness or tiredness - and you may not experience these either!

We went to Greece (also Santorini) at 27 weeks for our honeymoon and it was gorgeous!

RickGhastley · 07/06/2012 14:42

Absolutely book the holiday!

I went on hols to Oman and to Italy at around 8 and 12 weeks PG with both DCs. We'd booked both before TTC and concieved pretty quickly!

Was queasy and sick both times but was still able to lie on the beach!

shinyblackgrape · 07/06/2012 14:44

I went to New York when 9 weeks pregnant. Back at 10 weeks

I've just come back from Majorca last week - flew out when 14 weeks and back at 15 weeks.

I've had no problems and DH and I were determined to carry on with hols etc whilst TTC. Ditto, I also kept drinking (in moderation). I felt I'd go nuts if I didnt and we would end up living in limbo.

One thing to consider is that I was very tired and sick in NY. However, DH was very sympathetic and I went back to the hotel for rests whenever I felt like it. The food was a bit of an ordeal in that the huge portions made me feel even worse but we managed to find places to go with things I sort of felt like.

Book the holiday!
Relaxing on the beach is the best thing to do when you are pregnant anyway :)
Just don't go on any boat trips like I stupidly did when I was on holiday at 3 months pregnant. Spend the whole trip in the toilet being sick. What was I thinking? :)

NeedlesCuties · 07/06/2012 14:51

Get on with ttc!

I fly from Dublin to Hungary when 6 weeks pregnant with DS, then home again when 8 weeks pregnant. It was booked long before I got pregnant, was a bit of a fluke that I got pregnant just before going!

You might get morning sickness, or you might not. Some people are lucky and aren't really sick. I've had 2 pregnancies - one was easy and very little nausea, the other was very bad hyperemesis from the word go. You can't predict these things, just as you can't predict when you'll get pregnant.

perfectshadeofgrey · 07/06/2012 14:52

Regarding flying - it's perfectly fine to fly when you are pregnant (except in the late stages). In my first pregnancy I flew a number of times (at about 8 weeks and then lots more times after that). And I'll be flying in July when I'll be 10 weeks.
Don't put your life on hold just because you are ttc.
Good luck!

bonzo77 · 07/06/2012 14:55

We booked a holiday while ttc. Going in August when I will be about 5 months. You just can't put your life on hold while ttc. Who knows how long it will take.

toomuchribbon · 07/06/2012 15:21

Definitely book it!

Totally agree with all who say don't put your life on hold.

I will be spending a month on various Greek islands in July and August on honeymoon while 10 to 14 weeks pregnant. At 5 weeks now I suddenly feel shattered (no sickness... yet) but even if this doesn't improve I figure I can just sleep on the beach : )

Definitely do it : ) and best of luck with TTC

minipie · 07/06/2012 15:40

Book it! Greece is very close, very safe and very relaxing - the perfect holiday for TTCing or for being pregnant during.

We booked a long haul holiday while ttcing. Found out I was pg while there. I had a lovely time lying in the sun and thinking about my little bean.

The flight was no problem whatsoever (and that was 11 hours). I read up lots and there are really no mc risks to flying, just a slightly increased DVT risk so make sure you walk around and stay hydrated.

Tiredness and nausea were not a problem either - it was too early for that - and anyway much better to be tired/a bit nauseous when you're on holiday and can relax, than at work when you can't!

And as others said, you can't put your life on hold.

Spice17 · 07/06/2012 15:56

Haven't read whole thread but I would say book it, you can't stop your life and it could take a month or a lot longer.

I booked a hol to Greece in Dec 11 knowing that we were trying, got pregnant 2 weeks later and went when I was 4 and a half months, all fine no issues.

Thought MW might have concerns because of some bleeding I had in early pregnancy but she seemed totally happy for me to go.

SilkStalkings · 07/06/2012 16:02

Greece is not far, you'll be fine. I flew to Las Vegas with full on morning sickness and fatigue, got jetlagged and had about 3hrs a day when I could actually leave our hotel room!
I found my Spring baby was the best timing in terms of my own quality of life, you have the summer and the outdoors to look forward to, rather than to miss because you were too tired either side of birth or stuck indoors due to winter weather.

ClaireBunting · 07/06/2012 16:39

People who live in Greece get pregnant too and manage to survive the experience.

You only have to nest for a few days or weeks before the birth, not for a whole year ahead of it.

KatieScarlett2833 · 07/06/2012 16:40

I went to America for a fortnights hols at 6 months pg. No problems whatsoever even when I went on the tower of terror

farfallarocks · 07/06/2012 16:52

Another vote for go for it, it could take ages and even of you are preggers you will be fine

farfallarocks · 07/06/2012 16:53

Also flights and MC - no proven link at all, just move around a lot and drink water. i went sailing at 6 weeks pregnant with just my husband and it was great, I saw 2 consultants before going though (had had 2 mcs and was terrified)

Morning sickness is better when you are lying on a beach, eating lots of food, than at work, trust me....

veggie77 · 07/06/2012 17:07

Thanks everyone! It's a resounding yes! Going to book the holiday and enjoy myself :-)

book it, had no idea that concieving DS2 would be so fast, we booked to go to Antigua in the Feb, New Years resolution of trying for baby2 worked quickly so went long haul at 6 weeks pregnant. no worries at all!!

Do it Smile

shinyblackgrape · 07/06/2012 17:12

Agree with far re the morning sickness. Was a lot better in NY with DH running off to get me bananas etc at my whim rather than while commuting to work!

Off topic but waving to far - not sure if you'll remember me but I was on the Brookers thread. I'm 16 weeks this week - feels pretty unbelievable Grin. Hope all going well

ItsMyLastOne · 07/06/2012 18:12

Last pregnancy DP and I went abroad when I was 30ish weeks and that was hell on earth for me. (All SPD related hellishness, nothing to do with the holiday itself).

We've just come back from holiday with DD and I'm 14 weeks. I had a bit of nausea but nothing terrible. But my nausea hasn't been all that bad in either pregnancy tbh.

I'd much rather go in the first few weeks than later on. You might not have much or any sickness anyway so there's no point in worrying about that. Don't let what may or may not happen stop you going away, you could be holding off life for a long time doing that.
