Doctor says BFN - First Response says BFP - which am I to believe?

That says it all really. Anyone know what I should do.

If doctor said BFN on basis of urine test, I would actually be inclined to believe First Response test. I say this because when I was PG, the Boots test came up BFP virtually straight away, strong line, whilst the GP's test only came up with a faint line the next day. I would do a digital test, and go back to the GPs with that if it was positive.

Get a good digital, it's very unusual to have a strong quick positive that is false but very very common to get false negatives.

Congratulations! I think!

fastasleep · 21/02/2006 19:26

First Response are generally very very trustworthy - have you kept the test? If it's a false positive (as I said, incredibly rare!!) send it back to the company and kick up a fuss - should get some compensation!

starshaker · 21/02/2006 19:30

i had a positive test and went to the docs who did another test that came up neg. i had another test in my bag and asked hime to do that and using the same urine i got another positive. the test i used was a really cheap 1 but it was obviously more sensitive thn the docs. he sent blood off and confirmed i was pg

SenoraPostrophe · 21/02/2006 19:34

was the docs test after the home one? if so I'm afraid they could both be correct.

whimsy · 21/02/2006 19:34

I had a positive test, then went to doctors who said it was negative. Went straight to clinic where we had had IUI and it was big positive ds is now 3years

Go buy another test

Fee05 · 21/02/2006 19:34

Did your doctor just tell you to go away?! I agree I think you should request a blood test. I actually work in a hospital lab where we do pregnancy tests sent in by GPs and the test we do is less sensitive than any of the ones you can buy in the shops (crazy I know)

Missmibaby · 21/02/2006 19:37

It's good to hear someone else has had a similar experience. Felt a bit crazy there for a moment

ShaysMummy · 21/02/2006 19:38

i would agree with whats been said about first response.
they can tell b4 period is due and are much more sensitive than docs.
do another one.

Missmibaby · 21/02/2006 19:44

I did a FR test yesterday then got the dr to confirm - which he didn't. Did another FR tonight after the Drs. Both FR tests were positive. How did you get your dr to do a blood test?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 21/02/2006 19:48

TBH, my GP has never done a pregnancy test on me - he always asked what test I'd used and trusted that. The ones you buy are much more sensitive than the ones they routinely use. Just go back a week or so after your period was due and tell him (or her) you're pregnant.

fastasleep · 21/02/2006 19:51

Or take your test in, it's not like you can fake the test. If he/she objects to having something containing stale urine thrust at him/her then they should buy better tests or be better GPs!

Missmibaby · 22/02/2006 08:48

My dr didn't test me for my last 3 pgs which resulted in DS, mc (8wks), mc (12wks). The reason I asked him to yesterday was because I wanted to confirm that I'm not mad. Wish I'd not asked now. I wonder if I am about to miscarry, but there is enough HCG for a v. sensitive test to pick up but not for an unsensitive one. Are there any in the medical profession out there who can tell me I am talking out of my @*se or if I might be right.

my doctors ones never come back positive. if you have had 2 MS can you go straight to your early pregnancy unit and get them to do a blood test I am sure they would be more licklry to be able to tell you

Dont worry about the drs test I was 8 weeks pregnant once and it still came back negative they told me I had an ulcer everything was fine with the baby though

Good luck get in touch with your hospital please let us know how you get on x

Greensleeves · 22/02/2006 10:05

I did ten home tests, of different makes, when pg with ds1 and then had a doctor's test come up negative! They told me on the phone, and I ran down to the surgery with a coat over my PJs and just dropped all these wee-stained tests all over the nurse's desk.. she told me I was probably going to miscarry and that that was why the doc's test was negative, and I should go home and wait for it to happen. I ran home sobbing like an idiot. It was utter rubbish. DH bought me another home test that evening and it was as positive as ever... the doctor phoned me the next day and apologised. He said the NHS is still using the cheap 1950s dipsticks, and the modern home tests are MUCH more reliable.

fastasleep · 22/02/2006 10:07

greensleeves!! How awful, you should have sued!

Missmibaby · 22/02/2006 10:50

They can be pretty insensitive can't they. My GP rang me at home to tell me he'd done another test after I'd left (he'd been confused by the test results while I was there). Just told me to relax and test again towards the end of the week. I said what should I do if it was all wrong and I have just missed my period; he said well that could be caused by the stress of wanting to be pg. Unfortunately that stress has not been eased by his phone call!!

I'd go w/the FR one, tbh. They use that cheap ass stuff at the doctor's.

But then again, I don't trust anyone at our surgery any farther than I can throw them, which seeing as how I can't pick any of 'em up doesn't say much.

alexsmum · 22/02/2006 10:58

it must have been easier in for eg.my mum's day, where they didn't bother testing until they had missed two periods. Then you were definitely preg or not!
we have all this technology available to us and it can really complicate matters!
i would trust a home test before the docs test.think they are more accurate.

cece · 22/02/2006 11:01

Missmibaby

I have had a similar trauma over the last couple of days.

Mon eve - tesco test - very ver y faint almost not there

Tues morning - tesco test - slightly darker but still very faint line

tues lunchtime - clearblue digital - pregnant

tues afternoon - clearblue digital (after a pint of water) - not pregnant

weds morning - clearblue digital - pregnant.

Not sure what to think. Spoke to nurse at GP yesterday after the bfn and she said to try agin this mroning. Have to phone her back this afternoon.....

Think I am going mad. With the other two pg I did one test each time.... (lucky I bought multi packs this time! lol)

alexsmum · 22/02/2006 11:04

cece- you drank a pint of water! this dilutes the urine so much that the test can't pick up the hormone.you are pregnant!
stop kidding yourself that you are not!!!!!!!!!!!

alexsmum · 22/02/2006 11:05

out of all those test only one was negative and you drank loads of water!

LucyJu · 22/02/2006 11:05

I'd be inclined to go with the FR result. As others have said, it's much more sensitive than any the doctor is likely to be using. It is also true that a pregnancy test might give you a BFN when you are pregnant (this happened to me even with clearblue digital), but it is extremely rare to get a BFP if you are not pregnant.
If I were you, I'd get another test and test first thing in the morning when concentrations of HCG are usually highest. I think congratulations might be in order...

Missmibaby · 22/02/2006 11:06

Congrats cece - gets expensive though. I've just ordered a load of tests online. Am meant to be going away for romantic weekend so will wait till Sunday to test again don't want to drop a dark cloud over it.

Good luck at the dostors cece
