Bump measuring 2 weeks too small - worrying :-(

Hi,

I'm 32 weeks pregnant but only measuring 30cm. Have to go for a scan next week to check baby's growth and liquor volume. Has anybody else been in this situation and what did it mean for you and your bump?

Thank you for your honest responses. I know it could be nothing to worry about but just wondering what it could mean and what they might do about it.

xx

Hiya.

I was measuring 1 week short from about 24 weeks. And I had to have regular scans. But I just had a smaller baby than expected but she was fit and healthy just smaller than most full term babies.

Thank you so much for your reply! That is good to hear x

I measured 2 weeks short too despite DH and I being lanky giants. The madwife really panicked me at the time so I had anther scan and all looked fine. My baby was and is perfect, she was on 25th centile so smallish but not tiny.

headfairy · 30/05/2012 23:08

Measuring bumps isn't an exact science.... I measured 6 weeks behind my dates for my whole pregnancy with dd and neither midwives or sonographers felt it was anything to worry about. It could be down to many factors... The baby's position, amount of fluid etc. in the end dd was 6lbs13 at 40+13 so a bit small, but nothing to worry about. She's quite tall now.

therewasalittlegirl · 30/05/2012 23:18

Thank you everybody, you are all making me feel much better. My mind's been working overtime!

Bump measurement has a margin of error of 1-2cm and each cm is a week. Try not to worry I measure about 1.5 cm behind but baby on 55 th percentile and plenty of fluid. Sure you'll be just fine too.

Longtalljosie · 31/05/2012 08:27

This happened to me too - but as others have said there's a margin for error in there. How tall are you? Taller women come up smaller for dates (as I was finally told when actually in labour!)

DeeLite · 31/05/2012 08:46

My bump measured two weeks behind dates but a healthy bouncing baby arrived at 40+4 weighing 8lbs11. The midwife said I didn't have a huge amount of water.

2ndDestiny · 31/05/2012 09:11

My bump measured 2wks behind throughout 3rd trimester. My midwife wasn't bothered, and said only if it went >2.5 wks behind would they offer growth scans. DS was born healthy at 40+6 weighing 9lb2oz.

bonzo77 · 31/05/2012 09:20

I measured 3 cm too small at 30 weeks. I had a lot of monitoring but nothing was found. I was eventually induced at 38 weeks with loss of foetal movement and reduced fluid. DS was 5lb 11 and 2nd percentile. But absolutely healthy and fine. Was 50th percentile by 12 weeks and has stayed there.

Thelobsterswife · 31/05/2012 09:24

V similar to bonzo. DD1 was measuring small from about 30 weeks. I had low fluid as well. Eventually had csection at 37 weeks after failed inducion. She was 5lbs but very healthy and is now a very tall toddler and full of beans!

FoxyRoxy · 31/05/2012 10:21

I get scanned every 4 weeks (live abroad) and my baby has been a week or so bigger since 18 weeks. I'm 25 weeks now (I've had 3 scans since 18 weeks) and my bump measures 22cm. Big baby small bump. My fluid is fine, and my previous pregnancy was the same. Please don't worry.

FoxyRoxy · 31/05/2012 10:23

Oh and I'm tall. And slim.

mascarpone · 31/05/2012 10:34

Yep, I measured small for both my pregnancies (I felt HUGE though Grin). By the time I got to my umpteenth extra scan, someone told me I had a retroverted uterus (i.e. it's back to front) and therefore my measurements would never have fitted the 'correct' ones anyway.

Try not to worry about it.

whippetwoman · 31/05/2012 11:02

Hi therewasalittlegirl. I was referred for a growth scan yesterday as I too am measuring small. I'm 36 weeks but measuring 33.

This is my third pregnancy but I had this with my first and went for loads of growth scans. In the end she was just 6lbs, which is small but perfectly healthy. She is now a tall and slender 10 year old. I am usually tall and slim (though feel huge right now) but I still feel worried about having to go for a scan even though I've been there before. Fingers crossed everything will be ok. They say as long as the baby is moving well then it's usually fine. Hope it's all fine for you.

ElizabethPonsonby · 31/05/2012 12:00

Measured small with dd, about 2 cm under for the last 6 weeks. Went 10 days over, she was born at 8lb 10.5 oz with a massive head Grin I did enjoy pointing my 'small' baby out to the midwife who told me she would only be 6.5-7lb Wink

runlolarun10 · 31/05/2012 12:10

I've measured 2-3 weeks behind throughout my pregnancy but my midwives have always said not to worry and haven't had any extra scans etc. At my 35 week appointment I was measuring 33, but last week at my 37 week appointment I measured 37 so suddenly had a growth spurt!

babylann · 31/05/2012 12:11

Don't worry :) I can't give any constructive advice (I measured too big, not too small) but I've heard it happen to many people I know and nothing bad has ever come of it.

bonzo77 · 31/05/2012 16:12

mascarpone v interesting that thing about the retroverted uterus. I have the same.

Chunkychicken · 31/05/2012 20:46

I seem to remember that I was measuring 1-2wks too small throughout my pg and although they kept an eye on me, I was never sent for extra scans or anything and was told that there was a margin of error of 2cm. If it had been more, they might have worried but it wasn't a concern. As it happened, DD was born at 39+3 naturally at 6lb 5oz, so was just little. I'm only 5'2" and slim, & both DH & I were 6lb odd babies, so I guess it was only to be expected.

Barbielovesken · 01/06/2012 09:45

Im finished having babies but after 3, I would tend to ignore these size estimations.

dd1 was apparently a mahoosive baby. Huge concerns over size. She was 8lbs 10 - not particularily huge.

ds was estimated to be an approx 7lb baby. He was born the following day at 8lbs 5.

I measured 1.5 weeks behind all through my pregnancy with dd2. She was born weighing 9lbs 6 ounces.

The very best of luck Smile

LIG1979 · 01/06/2012 11:48

Hello.
I measured 22 cm at 24 weeks and then 24 cm at 28 weeks so was refered for a growth scan. After panicking for a week about all the things it could be (I won't give you all the things I googled) - I had the scan and it showed that the baby was fine and if anything slightly above average size and weight and it was just its position and how I was carrying her. I am now trying to appreciate the benefit of having a smaller bump.

It is so difficult to not worry though.......

Laurarj84 · 03/06/2012 03:47

Hi, I measured 1 or 2 smaller with my first by 34 weeks and was sent for a growth scan but I could feel that the head was engaged and everything had dropped a lot lower. My lovely scan lady said the head was 3/5 engaged but baby was measuring up fine for the dates. So that could be what has happened as you are pretty well along. They did estimate a 7lb something baby but DD was only 6lb 1/2ounce, so she was small but all there on arrival at 37+4. You will be fine and going on the fact that it happens to so many of us, it does seem that hospital staff are just trying to cover any eventuality. Xx

LadyWidmerpool · 03/06/2012 04:09

I was 'small for dates' at 37 weeks and baby was 9lb 11oz at birth.

MushroomMagee · 04/06/2012 21:56

I was measuring 3cm too small for the last few weeks - had a growth scan on friday and they think he / she is 6lb 7oz already and on about 55th centile! So I really don't think its anything to worry about :) They're very cautious about that kind of thing. Also, in my last pregnancy I had a personalised growth chart, which actually had my expected measurements and centile lines as smaller than the number of weeks = number of cm prediction. So it seems to be far from an exact science..
